+ 9 How strong are you guys? Just curious

ad

This isn't about who is the strongest mofo on eroids as it is just about me being curious. The last few days I've seen a few members commenting on working out with 120-150 pound dumbells on inclines, which in my opinion is good, especially if you're around 200 pounds or lighter. So my question (1) what is your 1 rep max on bench or squat and or (2) how many times can you rep out 225 pounds on the bench press? Or what were your best lifts in your prime years as alot of guys are older now? This isn't a powerlifting forum but more about bodybuilding so I get that, but again I'm just curious.

Bench press 190kg x3 about 418 pounds. Squat 200kg x8 about 440 pounds. About ten years ago. Today, I do everything with machines for 12-15 repetitions and I don't look at the weights. It is not interesting when working on a machine Smile
Btw, this change is not due to some injury. Thank God I don't have any injuries, but I think you should know when it's time to change your training style.

DeeMan's picture

Lol that creatine will do that to ya. I was telling the guys I'm going to start incorporating some Hammer Strength machines on my lighter lifting days. I like the isolation of the muscles

creatinehcl's picture

Yes only the creatine hcl version LOL The strangest thing is that I don't react to creatine at all (creatine non-responder).
It's all a matter of the intensity you put into the exercise. And as for the muscle you are targeting, it is much easier to hit the muscle on the machine/cable.

DeeMan's picture

Yea some don't react well to the regular version. Some creatine will mess up the stomach though

Gym and Bikes_bro's picture

Quick math translating kgs into pounds, my 1 rep bench max is 375pounds, squat 530 pounds and I'd say I can rep 225 pounds about 25times.

DeeMan's picture

Thanks bro. You look like a damn greek statue though!

Gym and Bikes_bro's picture

From our history lessons, I don't remember greek statues with a popped belly, haha :)) But thanks Mate, I appreciate your compliment.

My best bench was 315 for two reps. Unfortunately, I have a work-related shoulder injury, which requires reconstruction surgery, that prevents me from pushing past my all time best. Oddly, I can rep 250-260 lbs. 6-to-8 times per set, although I sometimes lift even less weight if the pain becomes unbearable.

I have never been a fan of squatting... I know, that sounds like sacrilege to a lot of people (LOL)! I never tried a 1 rep max with the leg press, but I usually rep 800 lbs. 12-to-15 times per set.

I honestly don’t know my max lifts. On bench I will warm up with the 20kg bar then I’ll do 2 warm up sets like 60kg 80kg then jump in to my working sets 100kg (225lbs) 15 reps , then I’ll do 2 sets at 180kg to failure 8-10 reps first set then anything from 5- 10 reps second set . Squats I hit working sets of 6-10 reps at around 240kg - 260kg depending on how I feel but that’s with my knees strapped up as my knees have had multiple surgeries and tears scare the shit out of me these days . I’m 245-250lbs body weight though

I'm out of likes but man you look like a typical powerlifter. You're 245? I figured you were a 275-300 pound guy seriously. You remind me of the former world record raw bench press holder Scott Mendelson( Mendy). You guys are built exactly the same and everytime I see you I think about him...Always nice chatting with ya.

545 for 10 reps is my best ever raw squat set. Only used sleeves and belt. Never maxed out yet though, I can almost guarantee I would tear something. Best bench for me was 2-3 years ago at 413 for 2 (using kilo plates) but I see bench as kind of useless now for bodybuilding purposes compared to what can be done with dumbbells.

I agree if you're focused on bodybuilding and want to lower your risk of injuries then dumbells are the way to go. Man I haven't used dumbells for bench pressing in many many years. I probably forgot how to do them lol.

Dre25's picture

Best bench was 2 years ago 39 years old weighed 195lbs and hit 455 Did 225 for 41 reps and 315 for 18 2 months ago Hit 555 on deadlift and 535 on squats

I honestly appreciate all the comments my eroids fam. If I don't give you a like it's probably because I'm out of likes but thanks. And feel free to give likes to one another. I'd appreciate that.

JakeKO's picture

Embarrassed to admit that I’m at my strongest I’ve ever been now. Never been this serious about training before, so at 53, it is what it is. Always been a good fighter, so didn’t care much about strength when I was younger. It’s you Eroid guys that got me caring about strength because I want to grow, and history has proven that if I don’t up the weight, I stop growing.

My flat bench is 315 for three reps without a spot (too embarrassed to ask for a spot). Although I never really straight bar bench anymore. I was uncomfortably sore for days after doing that dumb shit.

225lb is 12 reps because it sucked enough for me to realize I didn’t want to try for 13.

Incline is 90lbs for dumbbells . I never flat bench dumbbell anymore. I only go flat for flies and never go higher than 40lb dumbbells.

I’m sure I can do 100lb incline dumbbells for at least 2-3 reps, but too scared of getting hurt and not being able to train. I’m too old for that shit, but it’s definitely tempting to try

DeeMan's picture

Why are you embarrassed? They call it muscle maturity and grown man strength. I've talked to different guys about this around your age and alot of them say they are stronger now than when they were at their prime 28-30 age. That's what they said so you gotta give yourself some credit jake.

JakeKO's picture

Thanks, Bro! I have some good days, but regret not taking it more seriously earlier in life. I was just too fucking lazy back then. I’ve always worked out, but never like I do now. It keeps me feeling younger and healthier, which seems to be very important to me since taking this site more seriously. Hearing everyone’s stories and goals pushes me harder every day. I fuckin love Eroids for that

DeeMan's picture

Like @SeeOhShow just said...strength has no age limit. I've come to learn that. I figured there was a certain age that it came about but that's not necessarily true from my experience and from what I've seen. Now with that said there is muscle maturity. But Hell I'm trying to be like you and ole Sly Stallone. Damn that guy looks good for 70 plus. He looks your age. He looks about 20-30 years younger than 70 to me.

JakeKO's picture

Yeah, I’m definitely a Sly fan myself. Even more so than Arnold.

DeeMan's picture

The guy is a Walking Legend

SeeOhShow's picture

Strength has no age limit or qualifier. Strong is strong and doing it at 53 is nothing to be embarrassed about (opposite actually, should be proud and own that shit). All my ~50 year old coworkers would be lucky if they could lift more than a hamburger to their mouth.

DeeMan's picture

@SeeOhShow what's your opinion of muscle maturity. I do believe in it but I don't think there is a set age for it.

SeeOhShow's picture

I guess it depends on what it is we’re classifying as muscle maturity. If it’s the concept of you get harder/denser muscles the longer you’re in the game, then no I don’t believe in it. I would call muscle maturity the point at which you can’t reasonably grow a muscle group anymore for your genetics

DeeMan's picture

Right I'm with you but what I'm thinking is...use yourself as an example. So think back to when you were say 20, 21. Would you say physically that you looked as good back then as you look now? Would you be stronger now? I can say that physically now I look more complete and better than I did at say 21. Now even though I was big and strong at 21, when I look at those pictures I can clearly see muscles that aren't as developed as they are now, but those same muscles got alot of attention back then as they're getting now so it's not as if it's due to lack of training in those muscles. That's what I've seen with myself and others. I do think there is something to that. @SeeOhShow

SeeOhShow's picture

No I’m bigger and stronger now. Because I’ve built more tissue and, subsequently, stay leaner on my bulks than I did back then. Stronger because your muscles slowly become more efficient when training for strength and you get minor technical improvements that increase your overall efficiency/power output.

Those muscles you speak of, you might have changed/tweaked little things as you got more experienced and now they grow easier/better than before. You just don’t realize those subtle changes. Or you have a much better mind/muscle connection and are really able to contract that muscle and control the eccentric better vs surrounding muscles taking over.

I do not believe a muscle goes through this structural/biological change that many people refer to as “muscle maturity” because they say a pro bodybuilder 10 years in the game “just looks denser/harder now”…no they just have so much more muscle than before and now constantly stay leaner so always look more shredded.

If density changed, then size would stay the same and weight would increase. Which doesn’t happen.

DeeMan's picture

Those are good points. Just my opinion and I know you disagree, but I bet if you were to do the exact same thing you're doing now but at the age of say 21, there would be a difference physically. I know for myself there would be, no doubt. EDIT: I didn't start gear at that age but just giving an example but not recommending. On the other end, 15-20 years from now I won't look as good physically as I do now. Now as we get older changes tend to occur and of course decreased hormone production and working out is a big factor but it's normally a decrease of mass if anything for the average person as they age. It's strange but the muscles seem to take on a different look into older age in my opinion. Now again there are exceptions no doubt. Just the way I see it.

SeeOhShow's picture

Can I go back to 21 and use drugs???? lol jk I’m glad I waited til my 30s

DeeMan's picture

Lol just to be clear to anyone reading this..I'm not suggesting anyone even think of touching gear at 21. Hell nahh. That seriously wouldn't be a good idea. Too young in my opinion. But was trying to make a point and SeeOhShow glad you waited until 30s.

JakeKO's picture

Thanks, Bro! My proudest moments these days are walking out of the gym knowing I did my best again, while every single one of my friends are probably still fast asleep. That’s the only thing that really sucks about my age is that the only other people in my life that even care what they look like anymore are my wife and kids. The whole family has gone gym crazy after Covid. Always striving to look better every day.

SimonM84's picture

So I made the comment regarding incline but you know I haven’t flat benched in years. I can’t do flat dumbell press or bench at all because of pressure on my shoulders.

What doesn’t make sense is I can do standing or seated barbell/dumbell military press for 110s (4 or 5 reps)

Standing barbell press- 235 1 rep max but pressing it right from the standing rack, not as a thrust.

I messed around with incline bench 225 for 15 times but didn’t go any heavier because of injuries.

Squatting I hit 415 1 rep max in December but hurt my back and groin from doing it. Have it on video, looked awkward but got it up

Deadlifts 465 for 3 reps.

I’m off cycle now so the squatting/deadlift weight is substantially less but I’ve always been decent with pressing.

With all that being said, there are 25ish year old kids and a bunch of other guys in my gym who are substantially stronger but I still hold my own with military pressing.

I don’t believe 1 rep maxes prove true strength because there are former college football players and other college athletes who remain strong through a high intensity workout while incorporating circuits and drills which I try my best to compete but there are levels to fitness.

This year I’m going to focus more on muscle ups, calisthenics (even though my shoulders bothered me doing dips) and box jump stuff. I don’t even know what the hell im doing but these guys at my gym are on another level and I’ll tell you the truth, most of them aren’t even on a cycle.

Appreciate it man. I feel I can go further but not without an increasing risk of injury. My Doc already said nothing overhead but I’ve been doing everything cable related and in the front.

DeeMan's picture

Yea better to listen to your Doc. I'll say this..I use to hate using cables but nothing else has brought my shoulders out like cables have.

DeeMan's picture

You and @wanted are why I posted this.

235 from a standing military press is what stands out to me. And if you're repping 225 for 15 on incline normally you would rep more on the bench press but injuries are a factor so that's understood.

SimonM84's picture

I don’t have great genetics either. I credit the people who’ve trained me over the years and the environment or setting I placed myself to exceed past my expectations. My gym is like a community where we all try to elevate each other regardless of our goals. But I believe in total fitness. There are guys who are stronger than me but they can’t run a couple of miles or do stairs for longer than 10 minutes. I rather be a well rounded athlete the a how much do you bench bro.

In a promo × 1
DeeMan's picture

I mean benching is overrated to alot of people so I can understand what you mean. It is better to be well rounded no doubt and that's my goal. But as a youngster I've always been fascinated with strength, I loved the incredible Hulk, He-Man, Hercules and stories of Samson. So it's instilled in me but I can definitely see your point.

And good genetics are great but at some point those guys gotta bust their asses in the gym or train hard for whatever sport or they will be surpassed by someone of lower genetics who busts their ass training. I've seen that happen many times.

SimonM84's picture

Yeah man. Sometimes a strong will and dedication does it. But I can’t credit the people who’ve been around me enough. They really pushed me to surpass what I couldn’t even have possibly imagined doing several years ago and now, I’m teaching these broccoli styled hair kids with tripods how to properly workout, get a haircut and not wear pajamas.

In a promo × 1
DeeMan's picture

Hahaha you guys are killing me with this broccoli hair style stuff. Sometimes when I'm working out I'm looking around thinking about that. And I'm glad you're giving credit to whom it's due. I always say that. You've told me some of your story before. It's all about helping others out because we don't know what someone is going through in their personal life. For some this is their social media so I get this may be their safe haven.

SimonM84's picture

I have to also comment, my form is a full rep motion. I won’t attempt any weight unless I can pick it up myself as well as slow and controlled form. One thing about those football guys is they use a little momentum and bouncing. Some of their pull up form is shit too lol

Powerlifter/armwrestler here. Best touch-and-go bench was 515 at 6' 210lbs morning weight. I was on 250 test e, 400 tren e, and 50mg anadrol daily when I hit that. Best pause bench powerlifting style was 501 at 217 lbs. Never done a 225 repout but my best 315 repout was 22 reps. I primarily strain for strength, not bodybuilding
