Shoulder injury on cycle
Guys, about 3 weeks into my first Deca cycle. I’m stacking it with test. Just at the gym and hurt my shoulder. Felt something pop on a set. Instantly racked it. Lowered the weight by 70 pounds and tried that. Did it easily but definitely some pain. I have full range of motion without a lot of pain and did three sets of light shoulder press (grandpa cables) without pain during the set.
Should I just not do exercises that hurt? Should I stop the cycle? I still have 12 weeks supply left. My plan now is glucosamine, ice and to not do exercises that irritate it. Just don’t want to waste my first cycle.
Just looking for a little advice. From what I’ve read, the Deca, test and glucosamine should really help it heal.
Let me know what my best course of action is please.

Does it hurt on side laterals
Not really, just sore. The only time I feel pain that is more than just being sore is with the straight bar on bench and military presses. When I do those I can feel it puts strain directly on the injury. Everything else is noticeable. Pressing motions with my elbows out seem to be the worst. If I switch to a really exaggerated false grip or hold dumbbells at a 45 it’s not as bad. Curls are probably the closest to the bench for pain.
Well, took five days off of upper body to just ice and rest it. Lots of glucosamine/chondritin and collagens. Did a light push routine yesterday. Warmed up with the bar on the bench. Wasn’t bad if I used a really exaggerated false grip. Didn’t do much there. The hammer strength machine felt ok and so did dumbbells and shoulder press. As long as my grip was closer to vertical than horizontal. Lots of reps, light weight with good slow form and a solid squeeze. Did a pull routine today. Was able to go like hell until I went to barbell curls. Definitely think the injury is close to my biceps tendon. Overall it’s still sore but I have full range of motion. Went through rotator cuff surgeries on both shoulders so I know it’s not that serious. Almost feels like I’m post surgery needing to rehab. If it’s not better or improved in a few weeks I’ll go see my doc. Just figured I’d give an update. Chasing that 350 bench at 48 years old is off the table for now. I really appreciate the input guys!
The fact that it seems like it’s improved is a good sign, but your description of a “pop” concerns me you’ve done more damage. Hopefully you’ll get away with it. I’ve had five shoulder surgeries, they’re not fun.
In the meantime and just work body parts you can without any load on shoulders. You should have quads, hams and calves like Ronnie Coleman in a few weeks lol!
Best of luck with recovery fella.
I had a minor torn bicep tendon in my shoulder. I stopped working out for a month then did rubber and shoulder exercises. Healed up perfectly.
Thanks Bill. I think I’m going to take a week at least to just do cardio. After that, I’ll feel it out. Just bummed because I was within inches of a goal. I definitely won’t go forward until I feel comfortable. I’ve rehabbed both shoulders after surgery and it doesn’t feel like that. At least I still have full range of motion and can tell it’s better after 48 hours rest. I appreciate the advice, thank you. If it’s a month, it’s a month.
My advise came from a power lifter at my gun who is a physical therapist. He was right.
Those rubber bands are a Physical Therapist's best friend I promise you. I know this to be fact lol.
That’s what he said. Guy is scary looking. 350 ppunds tattoos all over but he’s a teddy bear. Works at a nursing home doing physical therapy. He saved a lot of guys at my gym from surgery.
Wow 350? Monsta! Well he seems to know a thing or two about treating injuries. Good to have that guy around I bet.
There are some genetic freaks at my gym. It’s a competitive powerlifting gym. It’s perfectly normal to see guys squatting 750 and up. One guy hits 960
Yeah we might be members of the same gym Bill lol. I love those type of gyms, that's my thing. Yes 700 bench, 900 squat etc. Crazy numbers man. If you didn't see it ya definitely wouldn't believe it. My buddies though.
JohnJuiceYou can still do legs.
Just train around it. It sounds like some minor impingement or strained tendon. I've had a messed up shoulder for over a year (steadily and constantly improving though). Find what works with no pain. I can do dips, but not too low, incline dumbbell press, lateral raises not going above shoulder height, and all rows/chins just fine. I'm still making great progress in all areas despite not benching or overhead pressing.
Had something similar happen recently. Sprained my right wrist and pulled something near ribs (old war wounds) if you can rest it and work around it do so. You know your body better than anyone. DO NOT exacerbate the injury and look up work arounds. Short of that rest and recoup. You have the rest of your life to train. Sometimes a curtailed cycle is just par for the course.
I've had this happen. Stay on cycle, lower weight and eat a few extra calories for a few weeks. 2-3 max if it doesn't start feeling better see an ortho and see if there's any actual damage or he puts you on restrictions. If so pull the plug and pct. Always play safe
Thanks man, I’ll definitely take your advice.
I recently had shoulder surgery what I would do is for the next week or two up the reps lower the weight and see when your shoulder feels better than go back to your normal lifts
I appreciate it. I’ve had both mine done. It’s pretty stiff and sore this morning but I still can raise my arm above my head to the front and laterally. It’s not as bad as when I damaged my rotator cuff. I think I’ll just take a few days off, pound some glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM, ice it up and start again with light weight high reps and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice.
I would continue cycle. There are other muscles to work still. Ease on shoulder, you can always rebuild when healed. If you quit now when you restart your gonna be 3 weeks short and have to start your blood levels from scratch all over again. My opinion and my opinion only.
Thanks for the input.
