+ 8 Trying to Bulk Up at 40+: My Thoughts and Tips
Hey guys,
I’m 42, been lifting for years, and Im planning to do a proper bulk to pack on some muscle. I’m not trying to step on a bodybuilding stage or anything, just want to get stronger and look a bit bigger in my shirts. I’ve been reading up, talking to some guys at the gym, and messing around with sme gear in the past, so I figured I’d share what I’m thinking about for a bulking cycle now that I’m over 40. It’s definitely not like when I was younger, and I’ve got to be careful with my body. If you’ve got any tips or experiences with bulking and gear at this age, I’d love to hear them.
Look getting older changes the game. My body doesn’t recover like it used to, and I’ve noticed it’s super easy to put on some fat if I’m not paying attention. I read that testosterone drops as you age, which makes building muscle harder, and my joints, knees, shoulders, remind me I’m not 25 if I go too hard lol. That’s why I’m thinking a smart cycle with some gear can give me a boost, but I’m trying to keep it sensible.
Eating is the foundation of this bulk. I’m shooting for about 300-400 extra calories a day above what I burn, which I figured out using an online calculator. I’m tracking everything with MyFitnessPal, even though it’s kind of annoying sometimes. Since I’m about 180 pounds, I’m aiming for around 180 grams of protein a day, chicken, eggs, Greek yogurt, and a protein shake after the gym if I’m short. For carbs, I’m eating rice, oats, and sweet potatoes to fuel my lifts. Fats come from peanut butter, avocados, and olive oil. I try to keep junk food low, but I’m not a monk. I also read that zinc and vitamin D can help with testosterone, especially on a cycle, so I’m eating more fish and popping a multivitamin.
For training, I can’t go crazy like I did in my 20s. I’m in the gym four days a week to give my body enough rest. I stick to big lifts, squats, deadlifts, bench press, rows, ince they hit a lot of muscles at once. I’m doing three or four sets of 8-12 reps, keeping the weight challenging but not maxing out. I make sure to rest each muscle group for a couple days before hitting it again. My rough plan is chest and triceps on Monday, legs on Tuesday, rest or a walk on Wednesday, back and biceps on Thursday, and shoulders with some core work on Friday. Weekends are for chilling or light cardio. I’ve also started stretching and foam rolling because my shoulder was acting up, and it’s helped a ton.
Now, about the gear. I’m planning a basic cycle to support this bulk, nothing too wild since I’m over 40 and want to keep things safe. I’m thinking about running Testosterone Cypionate at 400-500mg a week, split into two injections to keep levels steady. I’ve used Test before, and it’s worked well for me. I’m also considering adding something like Nandrolone (Deca) at a low dose, maybe 200-300mg a week, to help with joint health and muscle growth. I’ll probably run it for 10-12 weeks, keeping an eye on how I feel. I’ve got Arimidex on hand in case estrogen gets high maybe 0.5mg every few days if I notice bloating or other sides. I’m planning to get bloodwork done before starting and halfway through to check my testosterone, estrogen, and liver markers. I know recovery is slower at this age, so I’ll do a proper PCT with Clomid and maybe some HCG to get my natural levels back up after the cycle.
Supplements-wise, I’m keeping it basic. Whey protein helps me hit my protein goal, especially post-workout. I’m taking 5 grams of creatine a day for strength, and I read it’s fine even on a cycle. Fish oil is in there too for joints and inflammation. I ran all this by my doctor to make sure I’m not doing anything stupid, especially with the gear.
Health is a big focus for me. I got bloodwork done recently, and my testosterone was on the lower side of normal, which is part of why I’m considering a cycle. I’m trying to sleep 8 hours a night, though I usually get 7, and I’m eating clean to keep my cholesterol in check. If you’ve got creaky joints like me, a physical therapist can help I saw one, and they showed me how to tweak my squats to avoid knee pain, which has been huge.
Some things I’m trying to avoid: I learned years ago that eating a ton of junk food just makes me fat, not muscular. I tried a “dirty bulk” once, and it was a mess. Also, I don’t want to overtrain, pushing too hard screws up my recovery, especially on gear. And I never skip warm-ups anymore; 5-10 minutes of light movement keeps me from tweaking something.
I’m planning to bulk for about 12 weeks, hoping to gain maybe half a pound a week. After that, I’ll ease into a maintenance phase or cut a bit to drop any extra fat. I just want to look and feel stronger, not chase some crazy transformation. Anyone else over 40 running a cycle for a bulk? What compounds are you using? How’s it going? Got any favorite meals or gym tips to share? Let’s keep this thread going.
I'll inlude a pic of my physique as well here.
Cheers,
Stallion

Similar mentality to me man, I've just crested the hill of 40 so looking to just keep it clean and simple
geargodzWell thought-out approach, Stallion. Your cycle (Test C 400–500mg + low-dose Deca) is a solid combo, especially for joint support and lean gains at 40+. Splitting doses and keeping Arimidex on hand is smart. Nutrition looks clean and macro-aligned for a slow bulk. Just watch prolactin with Deca — maybe keep caber or prami on standby. Training volume and frequency seem age-appropriate; good call avoiding overreaching. Bloodwork pre/mid-cycle is a must — glad you’re on top of that. Keep us updated with how it runs.
alxloveSolid plan, man. You've got the right mindset for being over 40. I'm not quite there yet but closing in, and the "lift smart" approach is everything.
Your gear layout is on point. A simple Test base with a low dose of Deca is a classic for a reason – it works, and it keeps you feeling good. I totally agree with keeping the Deca at 200mg. You'll get all the joint cushioning you need without diving into the heavier side effects. For guys like us who aren't chasing a pro card, that's the sweet spot.
On the training side, I'm 100% with you on ditching the ego. One thing I'd add: be careful with flat barbell bench if your shoulders are creaky. It's a shoulder killer for a lot of guys. Switching to dumbbells for my pressing was a game-changer for my chest development and shoulder health. I also think deadlifts from the floor are overrated for hypertrophy and more trouble than they're worth for most. You can build a monster back with heavy rows and pull-ups without the same risk.
For a future cycle, if you want to try something else, look into Primo. It's expensive but it's arguably the safest injectable out there. Great for a lean, quality look and minimal sides. And I know it's not in the plan now, but a low dose of GH (2-4 IU) can work wonders for recovery and fat loss when you're over 40. It's a game-changer for how you feel overall.
Anyway, your head is in the right place. Keep the diet tight, listen to your body, and you'll get the results you're after without blowing up your health. Good luck with the bulk.
Good detailed post. I’m 45 and currently doing a recomp on test, tren, mast and var with 6iu hgh daily. Will bulk in winter after cruise. Planning to do test, NPP and dbol. I usually stay lean when blasting so this will be my first proper bulk cycle. I’ve struggled to get past 90kgs before despite eating loads, so this is my aim. Will then cut for summer. Personally I found better hypertrophy from volume, shorter rest periods, slower negatives and very deliberate mind muscle connection. Once targeted muscles are nearing exhaustion I drop weight and squeeze as hard as I can to pump as much blood into the muscle as possible. You know you’re on course when pumps are painful. My first cycle at 37 of test I did pct after and lost all gains plus felt awful. Started again 7 years later and have done blast and cruise with better success and all round feeling of wellbeing. Best of luck with your bulk cycle whatever you decide to run and keep us updated.
I think your plan is solid all around. I’m a bit younger than you but I feel the same way. Joints are shot, everything hurts so you gotta lift smart if you want to keep doing this for a while. Gear approach is good to. You’re right, you can’t go crazy like you could when you were 25. Test cycle at 500mg with some deca for the joints will get you where you want to go if diet and training are in check.
200mg of deca will have your joints feeling way better than they do now. With health being priority I wouldn’t go any higher than that on the deca. There’s been alot of studies on nandrolones effects on the heart, primarily on rats but it’s not good. To be fair all the studies I’ve seen have been on the equivalent of 400+mg ew or more. So maybe lower dose isn’t as problematic. Or maybe it affects rats very differently than it does humans, idk. But for joint benefits you don’t need more than 200mg. You’d probably do fine with just 100. I was talking to a guy the other day who’s prescribed 40mg ew and he says even that makes a big difference.
I’d agree with Panda, run it out for 16 weeks. Do bloodwork every 6 weeks and make sure everything looks good. Do cardio atleast 3 times a week. I do it fasted first thing in the morning or I won’t do it. I try to do it most mornings. Good for your heart and overall health especially as we get older. And fasted it’ll help keep fat off. And i like the recommendation for a DHT. My go to is always proviron at 50mg Ed. Seems like legit mast is hard to get right now, but there doesn’t seem to be any issues with provi and it has similar effects.
Im not 40 yet, but my recommendation for older guys who aren’t serious bodybuilders and are just trying look good while staying as healthy as possible is stick mostly test. If you want to add another injectable primo is the safest choice imo. Avoid orals. If you’re really itching to try one stick with anavar. A lowish dose GH can work wonders when you’re over 40. That’s when natural GH levels really fall off a cliff and why we tend to age physically so much faster after 40 compared fo 20-40. It’s worth checking your IGF-1 levels and seeing where you’re at.
Last thing I’ll say. If you have bad shoulders stay away from flat bench. It’s the worst exercise for your shoulders and for many people not very effective at building chest. Stick with DB presses. Much less chance of injury and they do a better job hitting pecs, atleast for me. I think dead lifts are a waste of time too if muscle growth and looking good is your primary goal. And they can be real risky if your form slips. There’s much better exercises for building a thick wide back. Barbell and DB rows are great.
stalliongAwesome thanks man!
I’m not in my 40s yet, but I’ve been running PEDs for a while, and what I’ll share here comes from my own experience, close friends, and athletes I’ve trained with.
If it were me, I’d keep your base like this:
Test + Deca + Masteron.
I don’t like throwing out exact doses because everyone responds differently, but usually:
• Test (E or C) as your base,
• Add Masteron E for libido, drive, strength, and that dry, clean look … it also helps free up more test,
• And Deca as your main anabolic for size and joint comfort.
If it were my cycle:
→ 600 mg Test E/C
→ 400 mg Deca or NPP
→ 300 mg Mast E or Primo
Then I’d adjust doses along the way based on feel and bloodwork, and I’d run it for 16–20 weeks, not just 12.
I kinda broke your questions down so I could answer them better.
Yes … it’s balanced. If you’ve got experience, you can tweak dosages week by week. I’d just add a DHT derivative like Mast or Primo to keep libido and overall balance.
Yes, it’s one of the main reasons people love it. Even at lower doses, it’s more anabolic than testosterone and helps with joint lubrication and pain relief. But it’s also your main mass builder here … not just a joint helper.
Train heavy and intense … push to failure whenever you can.
Do cardio at least 3x per week, ideally fasted, or post-workout if needed.
That’ll help your heart, keep fat gain low, and support the bulk.
Yeah … I’ve got a few old-school guys here on the forum who’ve done great with clean bulks at 40+.
Most of them prefer EQ instead of Deca for longer cycles, but it’s personal preference.
Maybe Big Mikey @Mikeyt84LINY will jump in … though I don’t think he’s hit 40 yet, lol. Maybe @Jockstrap … @anvil @press1 @irongame427 can give his 2 cents on this too…
PEDs multiply your results, but diet and consistency are king. (Remember 100 x 0 =0)
I like an old-school setup: high protein, moderate-high carbs, and low fats (<10%), and I use carb cycling to break plateaus.
Keep food clean … no fried junk, no fast food.
People love to blame Deca for water and fat, but most of that comes from the McDonald’s drive-thru, not the gear.
Deca can raise blood pressure and water retention, and affect lipids.
Supplements that help a ton:
• Omega-3
• Taurine
• NAC
• TUDCA
• CoQ10
• Citrus Bergamot
And don’t skip cardio 20–30 min fasted daily can literally save your health markers.
I would add some cardarine and MAYBE some Retatrutide #super low dose…
(never tried it in bulking but I heard it’s a game changer for keep overall health…all markers in place)
I agree when Vigorous Steve always says, fasted cardio is a game changer for long-term health.
And about PCT… honestly? I think it’s a waste (Fraud - this is my opinion and i respect everyone who thinks differently)
Your body won’t hold real gains on natural levels again … maybe 1 in 100 guys does.
In my opinion, yes … TRT for life.
It restores your function, keeps you healthy, and improves your quality of life.
Just remember:
TRT = health & longevity.
Cruise = performance.
TRT won’t hold all your cycle gains, but you’ll feel great, stable, and optimized.
Cruise is when you want to keep more of that size and power between blasts.
That’s just my opinion, brother man … take what’s useful, toss what’s not.
But based on what you said and where you’re at, this setup would serve you really well at 42.
stalliongSuper informative, thanks for the input!
If hes maxed out and experienced then imo a good 14wk cycle you laid out. Blood test bout week 5 with ai and da on hand as needed.
Nice job!!
I liked npp over deca but then you must look at eod pins for 12 weeks. About at same dosages you posted and 12 weeks.
Strong pct too if on that route
https://www.eroids.com/forums/steroids-qa/pct-anti-estrogens/simple-pct-...
Keep in mind decas 5weeks to half life. Npp is bout 2.
stalliongThanks brotha! Will look into the link
That’s it! Couldn’t agree more.
I’m the same way … always prefer NPP over Deca, even in growth phases. But yeah… that frequent pinning life ain’t for everyone.
