What are we doing wrong???

ad

While talking to a buddy of mine through one of my sources discussion pages, I started talking about people in my grandfather's generation in the 20's-30's. They where buff and huge, or if not buff, just lean in general and never touched a single weight in their lives! I often hear people on television say "what are we doing wrong?" Well, in case you never thought of it, here's my insight on the topic.
If I were to ever show you black and white pics of my grandfather and his brother, just in their adolescent years, they were already huge and buff boys! Why was that? How could a 15 year old and a 13 year old already have huge bi's and abs and never touch a weight?
EXERCISE: Well to start off, my grandfather was the middle child of four. When they were young back in those days first off, there were no school buses. So guess what, rain/shine/snow, every child had to walk to school! Not only that, but the kids were given a 2 hour lunch period to go home, eat and walk back to school! The school was a couple miles from where they lived, so imagine walking a total of 6 miles to school every single day! When I went to school, (don't know how it is now) P.E. was only 20 minutes. My grandfather stated back then P.E. was about an hour long, and sometimes there were 2 or even 3 P.E. sessions! The schools had the mentality that kids who got their excitement out through physical activities will be more interested in learning once class began. The superintendent who was out with the kids made sure everyone was playing, or doing some sort of physical exercise. You couldn't be in a huddle with a bunch of guys or girls without doing anything, because they thought those were the ones who were contemplating trouble. My grandfather's family, as well as a huge percentage in the USA back then, were farmers. So not only did my grandfather and family walk their 6 miles to school, they were ALSO in between working on the farm! My grandfather's family was of 6 people total including mother and father and all chores were split. Just before going to school, every morning the family got up at 5am and did the following chores:
1. milk and feed the cows (they had over 150 at one time), 2.feed the chickens and pick the eggs (they had 70 chickens and 3 roosters), 3. go out and pick veggies and fruit (acres and acres and acres of tomato, onion, garlic, fig, cherry, peach, olive trees etc.), and 4. feed all the other animals they had (pigs, horses, dogs, bulls, sheep, & goats). Sometimes, the chores got too overwhelming and they couldn't go to school. The chores were just too massive. They had to be at school by 8am. so if they were no where being done, they just forgot about going to school for the day. It was more important to get the chores done. When my grandfather and his brother got older, then the real fun work began! They had tons of acreage of hay, alfalfa, barley, and wheat. Everything was cut, rolled, and stacked by hand! Once they started making money, they were able to buy a couple Farmel H tractors to help disk the fields, but other thank that, it was all done by hand! Once the grain was cut, and rolled, it was then stacked up high in the barn. Our barn is still there in one piece and it stands about 50 feet tall. So I could only imagine the hell my poor grandfather and uncle had to endure stacking and climbing until the straw bails were up to the roof! They told me the bails weighed between 75-100 pounds A PIECE! Talk about a full body workout!!
EATING: In order for my family to do all this work, they needed to eat and boy eat they did. If you know any Italian, you will know the way to our hearts is food lol. This is proof to me as well that if you wanna get big, you gotta eat big. Luckily, my great grandfather was an expert butcher, and they never bought a piece of meat while he was capable of butchering. He did it all, which is why they had a selected variety of animals on the ranch to eat! My grandfather said everyday was pretty much like this:
Breakfast: 6 eggs A PERSON, 2 pounds of bacon, 2 pounds of sausage, 3 loafs of french bread, coffee. Ham or turkey would be thrown in for holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving.
Lunch: Was pretty much always sandwiches. Tons of french bread, Italian cold cuts (mortadella, salami, coppa, prosciutto), tons of cheeses, homemade olives, homemade wine, tomatos, and peppercinis.
Dinner: Always consisted of a meat, a pasta, salad, more french bread, and more wine. Their father always had huge portion cuts for each family member to eat. Pasta was always made daily fresh by my great grandmother. No brown pasta or brown rice shit.
So in-conclusion, "what are we doing wrong?" Well, if you eat big, you need to exercise to work it off, bottom line. You cannot eat McDonald's everyday, not do nothing and expect to lose weight! My family as well as everyone else in their generation ate well, but also kept on working! Hell, my grandfather often stated the only rest they ever got was when they finally went to bed at 8pm! There were no such thing as diets, protein drinks, weight lifting, diet pills.....everything my family did was exercise, even though they just called it work! Their bodies used all that food for fuel and because they were always on the move, the body never stored it for fat. My uncle was 87 when he died and he still had 18" arms! Now that was impressive! I hope one day the USA will finally get their shit together, and stop making bullshit excuses as to why the Obesity epidemic is out of control and they don't know why!

You pretty much nailed it on the head. People ate a ton of food but worked their a** off everyday to burn it all off. I come from a farm and ranch background. Fifth generation rancher actually. Always ate home raised beef and pork. In high school, I played all sports, had practice everyday after school then would go home and work until dark or even later. Even on gamedays I would work in between school and the game. Feeding cows, building fence, etc. Graduated at 6'4", 200 pounds and pretty cut without working at it. Went off to college and still played basketball daily but not the extra farm and ranch duties. Gained weight like crazy. Sedimentary life style and not enough manual labor to burn off all of the processed fast food. It wasn’t easy to be in shape back then, you just had to work and being in shape was a bonus that came along with the labor.

I'm glad you understand. That's what I tell some bros here. Unless you lived the life of a farmer, you will never comprehend what my story here is all about. :-)

I seen a story awhile back, that modern shampoo with all the chemicals and shit that is put in it may lower natural test levels. Might have to do me some searching to try and find it again.

Mirin your grandpas food regimen. Home slaughtered home cooked fresh food everyday.

Thanks bro! My great grandfather learned to butcher from his father in Italy. Back in those days of the late 1890's, it was either learn to survive or die. Which is why they always had various animals on the farm. While my great grandfather was alive until 1979, he was always butchering and curing his own meats. Pretty much everything was all done homemade and fresh. No additives and pesticides. Everything from butter, cheeses and meats were made fresh daily. I think the raw milk played a bug role in the muscle building Block as well lol

Average testosterone levels have dropped nearly 30% in the last 3 generations. Some of that's attributed to diet, but I believe a lot Is physical activity. Look at males as a whole these days. Manicures, blonde tips, pink shirts. When men stopped doing physical labor and put on the tie, the need for masculinity decreased.
Our ability to provide is judged by what we drive, our house, and our bank account. Not by the width of our backs.
Just my opinion, but what we're doing wrong as a society is being pussies

cdyrdes's picture

Preach on! You just became my new favorite person...lol. Had a guy show up at the gym for a few days (out of towner I guess) in great shape too but boy was he pretty. All the latest and brightest clothes lookin like a peacock in heat. Not a scar, blimish, callus or one hair out of place NOTHING wrong. One day on the way out I see him standing next to his car with a flat so I walk to him and asks if he needs a hand. He told me his dad is on the way this guy was about 25 or so. I told him to call his dad back and ill help "nah man I dont wanna get dirty" was his response..... I just shook my head in disgust

shawn0712's picture

Lol. We've got a whole generation of those guys in my gym. They'll come in and spend 30 minutes in the locker room getting dressed up to work out. Another 30 minutes in the mirror. Hit a set. Text for 10 minutes. They'll be there for hours and do nothing. There's this one that puts spiking gel in his hair. He's constantky running his fingers through his hair and getting that sticky shit on the bar. I finally said something when I was pressing one day and my grip started sliding outward on the way up.
I only like the mirror when there's a built woman doing squats. That's enough motivation for me.

nah man I dont wanna get dirty

Hey! Those were my new trousers and blouse!!!

cdyrdes's picture

You looked good in pink man, it complemented your frosted tips.....lol

italianstallion85's picture

Oh good Lord. Better add the pink feathers to your attire as well lol

vhman's picture

Look'n fly!

italianstallion85's picture

Lol thank you very much bro! I don't mind getting dirty! Real Fucking men get dirty. And any woman who wants a real man likes when we get down and dirty! Fuck all the foo foo clothes. Give me jeans and a t - shirt and sandals and I'm good. I hate going to my Fucking in-Laws, especially for parties. Want my wife and I to always come dressed up. Slacks, button up shirts......fuck that!

italianstallion85's picture

Lol no no I agree with you too brother. These " men" Need start acting like men and get their balls out of their mom's or wife's purses. My Fucking father in law is the same way. He's too good to do any physical labor and gets manicures and pedicures once a week. Now that is a Fucking pussy!

bulkingup123's picture

okay lets not exaggerate things lol, ulness they had 18-19 inch guns at 13 they weren't "huge"

italianstallion85's picture

Sorry if you don't believe me. I have pics, plus I worked with them on the farm until they succumbed to cancer. I have shirts and pants put away as family keepsakes. All their shirts and pants were customer tailored for them. And believe me, their 1934 school pic tells otherwise. Unless you lived the farm life, you won't understand.

bulkingup123's picture

post the pics then, this is like kids telling people my dad is the buffest man around lmao

italianstallion85's picture

Would love too but cannot. And the only reason why I cannot is because our family is still a big name in the farming community and our products are sold all over the USA in farming equipment and animal feed. Unfortunately no my dad wasn't buff like his dad. He was just lean. He was a little more lazy than my grandfather

cdyrdes's picture

In my very short version of what we're doing wrong(myself not included) I was raised somewhat old school and taught to provide for myself. The problem is that people feel that their entitled to have as much as the next man without any effort. Expecting handouts is an epidemic

italianstallion85's picture

Same here bro! Every single thing I own was through my hard work! My father and grandfather always told me that if I wanted something, go and work for it. I can proudly say my house, cars, musical instruments, 25 acres of almonds have all been from my hard work! I have never had ANY type of government handouts and I do not plan on starting. I do not need any help and I am perfectly fine of attaining my goals on my own

italianstallion85's picture

Thanks Bigwilly!

italianstallion85's picture

Thank you very much Iron Monk! It's very sad! In my area, the farmers have fundraisers and other volunteer educational field trips for kids because they don't know where the hell milk comes from. All they know is that it's found in the dairy Section at the store! I agree with you that our generation are turning into small, weak minded simpletons!

italianstallion85's picture

Lol yeah no shit! But if you ask them how to pass a level on grand theft auto or Halo they will be all over that shit!

italianstallion85's picture

Lol nice bro! The chicks want a real Fucking man and not some pencil thin dick wanna be. I don't fuck girlfriends or wives, I'm married, however I do see the looks in these women's eyes when they see a guy with a nice physique. I'm not the best looker but at least I am starting to turn heads lol....and halo from the video game console XBox.

Good write up. First off remove the source name. Secondly I know exactly what your talking about. My family has the same roots. The problem I have is in the USA we feel like our kids are falling behind mentally to other parts of the world So there is less precedent put forth on exercise and more on mental aptitude.

italianstallion85's picture

Thanks fusebox I did. My first big write up so wasn't sure on the mention. No I agree with you too. Then plus everyone is worried about other's feelings and how they will react. Everyone needs to man up and take responsibility for a change!
