Smokeless chewing tobacco, something you need to know

ad

I'm 42 yrs old and have dipped smokeless chewing tobacco of and on through out the years since the age of 14. Recently I have had really bad asthma, couldn't jog a 1/2 without about passing out, wheezing and sucking wind. Also an area on my back, close to the spine right between the shoulder blades hurts and is tight like in a knot, I've developed bad acid reflux this year and everytime I had a dip of tobacco the reflux would get so bad I would have to get rid of the chew and pop some tums. Come to find out the chewing tobacco will lead to reflux, I don't get reflux with food or anything else. What I found out also is that this reflux eats the lining of your esophagus and this turns that tissue into a lining like your intestines. This is where it gets scary, this tissue starts to scare and gets inflamed and is precancerous. Is called Barrett's esophagus. So apparently my reflux has scared and inflamed my esophagus which has triggered this terrible asthma, so bad that one day I went in to hit leg press and did one set and about fell out struggling for air. Shit is no joke quit dipping this shit while your ahead guys it is a stupid and needless habits. I've quit dipping for about 3'weeks now and back to 100% with no reflux and no asthma.

Chewing was hands down waaayyyy harder to kick than smoking. Congrats buddy, it really does fuck you up. In a lot of ways you know about, and like you found out, in a lot of ways you don't.

Thank you and yeah it hard to quit, but in my case it was almost life or death, which made it a lot easier to quit. Your right chewing tobacco can fuck you up in several ways. I brought my case up to several docs and most no clue what was going on, just throw me steroids and albuterol inhaler. I finally just researched it myself and found out what was going on.

Quit if you can bro, chewing gum will help and nicotine gum as well. Your here to be healthy and feel good, chewing drains you and makes you feel like shit, drop it.

DIpping causes reflex as long as you don;t keep drinking lots of fluids. I've been a dipper for 4 years now and whenever I dip I make sure I drink 16oz of water before I put it in; no acid reflux. Before that I would dip and not stay hydrated and my acid reflux was so bad it hurt. Since when your dipping you are spitting out your dip along with your saliva your stomach is not staying wet or hydrated so to speak and you get a buildup of acid in the stomach. By all means I am not condoning it; just making sure for those who are still doing it to make sure you stay hydrated and try to quit if you can.

Very true mask I try to stay hydrated , I been dipping like 8 years , considering the alternative years ago , I use to smoke packs a day , swithched to the dip , and felt healthy , put strenght and weight on .. not going to lie going to be a mother f , trying to quit , but im trying , started out with like 3 dips a day,now its a can , can and a half , copenhagen long

chewing is scary as shit.. i quit 3 weeks ago.. but i developed this red blister around my gum that kept getting worse.. went and got tested and results came back negative thank god.. my dentist told me though that i had some precancerous stuff growing in my gums and thats when i quit immediately.. its been 3 weeks since quitting and all those areas have healed thank god.. but if you do chew i highly suggest stopping because you can develop forms of cancer in your mouth very quickly .. i only chewed for about 1 year..

Congrats on kicking the habit hump. I've been on nicotine free vapor myself for over a month now, it's always hard initially but once the cravings are gone it's so much easier. Keep it up, and don't fall back into the habit man.

Appreciate it buddy and congrats to you for kicking the habit as well. I feel a ton better and going back isn't an option for me, it's already screwed up my esophagus, so cancer is at a higher risk. Best part is I started my cycle about 6 days ago and putting on weight like a fat kid eating cake. Really can eat a lot more.

Have you noticed that your food tastes that much better? I've never tried chewing tobacco, but quitting smoking has allowed me to taste flavor in foods I never knew was there. Enjoy the new cycle man, you're gonna love it.

Thank you for sharing this. Chewing tobacco is of the devil! I'm pretty sure most people know that you can get mouth and throat cancer from it, but I wasn't aware of what you discussed. It's not a safer alternative to smoking and it could be worse in some ways. Hope this motivates others to find a way to quit. Best of luck!

humpnpump's picture

I believe it's worse than smoking, plus the nicotine content is a lot higher which makes it harder to quit.

Thanks glad I could help pass a little knowledge around. I feel better already and putting on weight a lot easier and able to eat a lot more. I didn't realize how much dipping affected my appetite.
