pain killers and muscle growth
ad
so i was trying to do some research on painkillers, and muscle growth, and couldnt really find some actual facts on suppression of muscle growth. my question is does painkillers such as ibuprofen, Oxycontin, suppress muscle growth? i was in a really bad car accident about a year ago which results in back surgery. so from time to time i get prescriptions ibuprofen and oxycontin. i have been taking some ibuprofen for the last 2 months to control the inflammation of my back, but i noticed alittle suppression on my muscle growth could this be do to the painkillers i take on a daily basis? if any of you smart folks know anything please feel in. thanks

Two studies have been done. One study stated long term use of pain killers showed more muscle growth than the other group that was not taking them. On another study it showed groups taking pain relievers short term hindered growth. I remember reading an article also that stated if you use testosterone replacement or steroids then it doesnt really apply to you. But pain killers do lower your body natural testosterone levels.
BigBmajI take as few anti inflammation meds as possible. They do hinder muscle growth. If not I'd take ibuprofen everyday.
I can get you a source for this info but if you google it you will find something quickly.
NotNatural23I was on opiates for 6 years and in causes a decrease in testosterone. mine was good for awhile but once i got into oxys and some others my sex drive was none. had it tested and it was 68 on the 300 1100 scale my doc told me this was the lowest he has every seen a guys my age 30. that was 5 years ago and I am good now after being on trt and i am on suboxone now for chronic pain which is good cause i ahve kept the same dose for years and even went down and my pain is better than bing on oxys. oxys are no joke they are the best feeling but for some it ruins lives. u will be chasing the dragon until u die if u get hooked.
WeatherwedI had a similar experience. However, my total test stayed at a healthy level. But all the signs of low T.. or just a generally low function male drive were there. I never tested my free test or figured out the cause.
I was on painkillers for years, yea Ilost muscle mass, I attribute that to poor diet, lack of excercise, smoking etc. But once Istarted test Igained 25 lbs of muscle. Now I'm on suboxone going on 3 years and I'm in extremely good shape, best shape of my life. I think everyone reacts differently. Opiates do suppress natty test after awhile, but if you take test then u shouldn't have a problem.as far as the ibuprofen....maybe in theory it prevents musvle growth but Iseriously doubt it would have a noticable effect. I take advil all the time and I'm gaining just fine. Evidence based research.
well damn thanks for the input guys. i stopped taking the Oxycontin awhile back, because my body started depending on them fuck those things are addictive. i will try my best to lay off the ibuprofen, but i do got a rod implanted in my back from the accident. from time to time my back really bothers me especially during winter time.
It is true with all meds there is an exchange of pros and cons. But before dropping the ibuprofen remember that is is also something that could be allowing you to train as well. Ibuprofen can be hard on the stomach lining with prolong usage but before you jump off everything out of fear of losing muscle, weigh it out against whether it plays an important role in being able to train. Just an opinion.
Yes opiate and opioid based pain medicines will lower testosterone levels in some people
Best bet is to try and control pain with other measures
Once your dependent on the. Physically it's forever
The illness of addition is chronic so keep that in mind
But also don't let people tell you that you don't need them if you truly do
There is a difference between dependence and addiction
Some need these meds to live
They once you start long term opioid therapy your always in recovery and in a way it's true
Chronic pain suffer I couldn't walk or work without the therapy
But at times I wish I had never started but then I remember how I would hide in the bathroom at work just to sit down because my feet and legs hurt so much...nerve damages
And now look at me two years later on cycle lifting weights
I take them exactly as prescribed that's the way to do it
Once you abuse them its over so be careful and think long and hard on your decision to use
TALK TO YOU DOCTOR AND EXPLAIN YOUR FEARS follow the doctors advise
See a pain specialist MD anesthesia
I don't think people pay enough attention to the environmental issues. Things you put into your bodies, lifestyle choices and things you can't do anything about like pollution. Free radicals definitely slow progress and can do all kinds of damage. Whether it's some OTC drug, prescription, proccessed food, smoke etc. Your gains can be effected. Antioxidant rich foods (EAT YOUR VEGGIES), vitamins etc. will help, but just simply avoiding free rads as best you can is a must. I can see someone eating like shit, popping pain killers, smoking etc, then coming and saying their Test E is bunk. Educate yourselves.

GearofWarOpiates are suppresive on your HPTA. So, low/no test=loss of muscle mass/no gains. Been there done that. Horrible stuff.
I was addicted to Oxys for five years and I lost all muscle due to the fact I ate and slept like dog shit. But I am now on methadone maintenance program and have gained tons of muscle. I am currently dosing of only three months left!!!! So excited to be off but n e ways methadone slowed my metabolism and caused me to gain lots of fat and retain water. But with strict diet cardio and proper nutrition you wouldn't be able to tell I was on it. O ya I am currently at 27mg a day and am dosing down 3mg a week till I hit 10mg and going to 1mg a week till I'm off the evil shit.
Get ready for the detox from hell when ur done with Methadone bro, I highly suggest you switch to Suboxone/Subutex (Buprenorphine HCL) if you want to save yourself MONTHS of agony....I did the Methadone thing for almost a year once, detoxed for about 4 months after. Granted it wasn't horrible for the whole four months but bro it was for 8 wks.. The second 8 wks wasn't as bad. Relapsed after too I couldn't take the lack of sleep. Then I went on Suboxone and that wasn't bad at all
Coming off of suboxone is probably worse then coming off opiates and methadone, its horrible
Could be for some. I was doing 8 eighties a day of oxy so kickin that was real tough. So kicking like 8 mg of sub a day should be a walk in the park compared for me n e way. But still will suck.
Um...WALK IN THE PARK???? Ooooo boy ur in for a world of pain. Bro coming off suboxone is 10000000 times worse than oxy. For sure. It lasts way way longer and it fucks with ur head big time. its been like 3 years and Istill haven't been able to get off...mind over matter but when u loose ur mind and shit doesn't matter, but maybe you can do it. My boy did it, he had to go to inpatient rehab tho to detox from suboxone. I truly believe suboxone is the devil in a Sunday hat. It saves lives! And the cost?? 1 life...the one that it saved. Cuz you ain't gettin off sucka
honestly it was the worst i have ever dealt with, and i was taking 30-40 30mg oxycodone a day, so thats about what you were taking , maybe a little higher. for some reason, the withdraw with subs just lingers for a long long time.. but i guess its better to be on subs then to chase the pills all day everyday
I think he's talking about OxyContin. Not oxycodone (Percocet). Big difference.
Damn bro sorry to hear man. Ya when I first started getn sober I was taking 2 8mg subs a day or it was 3 can't remember. But I kept relapsing with em. So I switched to methadone and got up to 95mg a day and stayed there till beginning of last year and started dosing down on the clinics schedule and it was too slow so about two months ago I started dosing down a milli a day then slowed back down to a mg every Monday cuz the pains were getn bad. So now I'm at 27mg and have 27 weeks to go then will switch to a minimum amount of subs a day then kick those. I miss getn high every once in a while cuz there is no better feeling in the world but I ruined my life and will never relapse again. Haven't in over 3 years. Glad you got sober bro. Can't wait to not depend on something.
The whole "this is harder to kick than that" thing is just not true. Yes things like suboxone or methadone that have a long half life will make it linger. But if you taper off correctly and keep your eyes on the goal. You will be fine. Any addict or anyone dependent n anything can expect to have some discomfort when they stop. It's not like you'll detox and get down to that last dose and feel like a new man. Yes, there discomfort with everything. But how bad it is IMO is a mindset. People set themselves up for relapse with this kind of thinking. You have to change your mind first! Change your thinking. You have to want it. Just like anything else. Once you get here, the rest is a breeze. Talk to some ppl for support. There's a recovery lounge here. Let everyone help you through it.
Ya I'm totally ready to wake up truly sober. I will never relapse again. Ever. But I'm just done being dependent on something. Thanks for the tips big homie!
I'm here to tell you that suboxone is different. I feel like it takes ur soul. You get used to living everyday thinking ur sober and that ur on track and bla bla, then if you forget to take it or run out early or whatever, then you realize that ur running on high levels of anintense opiate everyday and ur body goes thru the detox....but that's okay....but the mental dependence is crippling. Its very difficult to adapt to life after stopping subs. Cuz u realize you haven't been making any progress you just put ur addiction on PAUSE and now years later u gotta deal with it. And Ibelieve its easier to get clean when ur at rock bottom rather than after spending years rebuilding ur life and relationships and going on as though ur fine, then boom go through detox from suboxone, it makes you feel vulnerable and childlike and weak and depressed. I dunno...its a fucked up FUCKED up process. Its almost like an un natural way to come off opiates. Usually people come off cuz they ruined their life and have no place to go but UP. But when ur happy and having a good life....why would you wanna stop taking suboxone? That's the problem, there's.o motivation to stop, cuz it works, its legal, it makes you feel good.....but shit it is like this monster/black cloud that sits in the back of my mind waiting to unleash once the doc cuts my script or GOD forbid they get stolen again. Then its on like donkey kong
Fair enough. I'll grant you this, Everyone is different. You said yourself, it was the mental battle that fucked YOU up. Who's to say the next man won't do it and not have mental hang ups? they said the same thing about Methadone. I walked off 190mg cold turkey. I was incarcerated. 30 days in they wanted to give me my meds. I was sick. Still achy, insomnia, cold sweats, still had the shits. I was tore up. I wanted it! In a split second act of courage and defiance I told the nurse she could keep that shit and I don't want it. It was the best decision I ever made even tho I suffered through it. Sounds like you put you imprisoned yourself with your thinking. We all don't respond the same way to adversity. If you really want to, u will get off the subs. You're still making excuses. I'm living proof 8+ years clean. And please don't tell me that subs are just different. They aren't. They attach to the same receptor as perks or oxy, methadone whatever. Just a longer half life. Again, physical discomfort. Stop selling yourself short bro!
Good for you for getn off bro! Ya I'm already hurting but I'm sick of being dependent. But ya soon as I drop off ill switch to subs I used subs before and kept relapsing but I haven't in over 3 years. So I am mentally ready to kick it but 4 months is a long time. Subs take like two weeks to kick n I can ride that all day lol.
nice i gained alot of weight to but got it off as well i am at 36mg and hope to be off ny the summer have been on it for about 6 years
Ya I gained 50lbs of fat in one year lol. I slept like 18-20 hrs a day cuz I wasn't working. Sucked. But ya I'm at 27mg dosing off 1mg every Monday. I get achy joints but not cold hot sweats or insomnia....yet n e ways. But ya they were taking me down waaay too slow so I sped it up. They were trying to say it will take another year to dose off 20mg at there rate. I was like fuck you drug dealas I'm getn out on my schedule which has been fine so far. Good luck homie!
Anoni'm curious to know some takes on benzos and AAS. i haven't looked deep into it, but i wanna say i remember benzo's reacting at a receptor level in a manner that can cause problems while on cycle. when i'm peaking on cycle, my sleep pattern is so jacked that i have to pop 1/2 a zannie at times to get a good nights sleep.
xanax prevents rem sleep bro. U may be asleep but ur not truly resting.
AnonWell, damn...
I used to pop theem for the same reason. Then I would wake up still tired. So I asked my DR and she told me about this.
AnonThat explains why you're so sleepy for an entire day. I thought it was just the residual narcotic effects.
Well ur sleepy for an entire day because benzos have an incredibly long half life
Long term use will also cause hypogonadism. Well at least hydrocodone/Norcos will.
Anoni like to use this search engine for my research:
http://scholar.google.com/
the wording is a bit more tricky than standard google, but the results are all scholarly articles based on case studies.
I can account to firsthand personal experience with OxyContin....I was addicted for YEARS and it WASTED my muscle growth to a point that it has been so hard even with AAS to come back from that. Ill never touch those satanic pills again I know they help ppl with pain but I rather suffer pain then go through all the shit that comes with those again
X2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 lol
Ibuprofen is a non steroid anti-inflammatory drug. The inflammation process is in part needed for ideal conditions for muscle growth. For acute injuries use of an NSAID is sometimes a necessity to keep you moving, but most sports medicine doctors avoid the use of ibuprofen because of its ability to stop the inflammation process in it's tracks. We knoow that stronger anti inflammatories such as cortisone actually are catabolic, and eat away muscle. Ibuprofen to a lesser degree promotes a catabolic state.
As for Oxy if you hurt bad enough to take Oxy you should probably take the day off.
I don't know the specifics but I do know that things like Prescription drugs, cigarette smoke, enviornmental polutants etc can and will cause a surge in free radical cells in the body. Free radicals are one of the major causes of the aging proccess. Our bodies actually produce free radical cells in some cases to help the immune system. But things like you suggest (Pain killers) will cause a surge of them for sure. They rob your muscles of oxygen (essential for muscle growth). Years ago when I first researched them , I was concerned about second hand cigarrette smoke. That first article I read called free radical cells #Muscle suicide bombers. So I would say yes on some level, those drugs will effect the growth of muscle tissue
I would also really like to know the answer to this question as well.....
