jury-rigged and Politically Correct high horses

ad

Ok, Over the years I have seen and used this phrase in all of it's forms...

jury-rigged: (of a ship) having temporary makeshift rigging.
jerry-rigged: organized or constructed in a crude or improvised manner (often thought as a reference to the germans in WWII but was in use during the 1800's)
nigger-rigged: A term used to describe a temporary fix or quick fix for an object using any tools at hand. Derived from the ingenuity of early African-Americans who did not have the means to fix every day objects and had to come up with these temporary fixes.

Of all the American colloquialisms this is in my opinion one of the least offensive. Yes, I know it can be used in a derogatory fashion and that's where common sense and reading things in context come in.

So get over yourself and your PC self righteousness! Take offence only when offence is meant and stop trying to invent it when it is not there.

I personally use nooka all the time.. With black friends or not (ask A he will vouch :-p) now, do they use cracker and Uncle Tom.. Yes! So it's about even and it's always said in joking.. I can honestly say there is a very defined difference in saying it that way and calling someone a Nigger.. Which in my book can be any race... Also, I generally use "southern engineered".. So is that to say people that are from the south should take offense I sure hope not but everyone to their own...
J.Mc.'s picture

That's my experience as well BRO and I'm a little more southern than y'all and I don't find southern engineered offensive at all. More like a complement, lol

I will add my .02 not that I think it will matter nor should it. I would not say that I am a PC type of person just because spent my whole adult life as a combat vet. Now anyone else here who is one knows there is no room for PC in a unit with diverse men of all colors and cultures. We use anything and everything to cut the tension and stereo type one another for pure entertainment.

This is a rule that I follow, regardless or race, religion, politics and etc. To treat others with respect until they disrespect me. Lets take an example to see how well we will keep our beliefs and opinions in tact no matter what. For the sake of this example we will use the theme at hand, I just brought in one of my employees who is a former delta operator. He is also black/ African American he doesn't seem to care which title befalls him. I know he was from a tough neighborhood where he grew up so, also it is well known for gangs. He told me it is Compton, California, now I know his background as well as his brothers involvement with gangs. This man is the finest of solders but I digress. Back to the example.

I asked him what would happen if a white or Latin man was on the streets of Compton and surrounded by African Americans and said, "Nigger Rigged." His first response was laughter, then he said to me,"You are being rhetorical skip; right?" Which I was.

Now I no there might be some brave eroiders out there that would say they would do this. So I am not speaking to you brave ones lol. I am speaking to any who are willing to stand by their convictions in all settings. Now if you are what I would call honest, you would dare use that term even if you use it while surrounded in like minded company. Therefore you believe in political correctness more than you thought at least when it comes to saving your ass lol.

I am trying to point out the idea of respect not trying to make people "politically correct". Do I think African Americans are still suffering from the results of slavery? No I don't! Do I think that people should call themselves a derogatory name because of their color but be pissed when those not of that color do it? No I don't! Do I think people should use possibly inflammatory words knowing the culture we live in just to get a rise and prove you are not political correct, well as long as you have the balls to use it in any and all situations then I respect that.

Darktide's picture

I am fortunate that the diverse guys that I am friends with which happen to be all solders, don't give a shit about semantics on either side. We have different perspectives just like everyone here and we are all relegated to our own experiences and ignorance of the effects of our positions. If I had your perspective I would think just like you, and that would be correct to me.

Plus you are a very loyal guy whether who you are defending is right or wrong. For me I admire loyalty like that! When I am on here I am trying to learn and see where I have holes seeing the truth on a matter is there is a one truth on it. I just believe the one thing for sure is we all have are own bias. I find myself arguing for and against my own opinions which is pointing towards the signs of a multiple personality disorder Blum 3

I agree with the fact that there is too much sensativity crap now days. It starts when the kids are little like games that they don't keep score on. They've even gone as far as making it taboo to call a chalk board a black board. All the little bullshit things that one has to do not to offend in regards to race, sexual preference, or religion. That being said I also think one should have some respect, tact, decorum if you will. I will respect you first but demand the same back. If I know that something offends you no matter your reason ill not do it even if it doesn't make sense to me. Now I might however ask why that offends you for pure curiosity. I like goofing around as much as the next person but I don't tolerate disrespect. I also have a real problem with double standards lol who doesn't right? 1 of my biggest problems with the double standards is how a black person can call another the n word but when a white dude says it all hell breaks loose. I think if its soooo bad then nobody should say it period. I never know what a black person wants to be referred as. You say colored they get all shitty and say "what color". You say black they want to be called African American when a lot of them don't even know their origins. They might be from Jamaica or Haitti or some shit. Should white people demand to be called European American? I could go on and argue from either side. It's all bullshit! You can argue from either side about race religion whatever....... For me it just boils down to respect!

Well this sure is heartwarming and inspirational. Posts like this really inspire unity amongst all the members of eroids.

people now days look at anything and everything to be "offended" over.. in my opinion, they need to get some thicker skin and a pair of balls..

OmNom's picture

Personally I think they're brain washed.. this sensitive crap is every where nowa days.. I haven't seen any one nearly as bad on eroids as some of these sensitive hippy internet warriors you find everywhere else thankfully.. maybe its the tren but I just want to give them a free cruise into the pacific with all of the mutated fish and sink it =D

kodiakGRRL's picture

lmao... go sleep with the fishes.. lol.. I call them SHEEPLE

OmNom's picture

I call them dirty hippies even if they aren't.. I'd say they are the only group of people I go out of my way to insult and troll.. of course this only happens when they start preaching the gospel of sensitive idiocy.. nothing compares to an enraged purple faced hippy

OmNom's picture

In my life time I've had much worse things said to me that make any racial profanity look like child's play.. things attacking the loss or loved ones or events that almost completely ruined me just out of sheer cattiness from losing an argument.. ya no what no one came running to my rescue or cared.. so I can't help but be annoyed every time I log on the internet to see some bleeding heart complain about racial potty words.. I don't use them but if you do I reeeeeally don't give a flying fuck. Also as a whole Americans make fun of an insult EVERY fucking race and no one really cares but if its about a black person every one loses their fucking minds.. maybe some of you should grow some balls and treat them like every one else.. they're not inferior beings that can't handle a bad word or racial joke.. I mean every other race seems to handle it fine but what do I know I just grew up with half my friends being black.. seriously I see people make racial jokes to Asians faces DAILY why is this acceptable but others aren't.. I insult every one equally =D

Shazzam!!

Makes sense to me

i agree. There's a difference between a joke or term that is meant to be unoffensive and something meant to be offensive. People need to lighten up, learn to laugh. I laugh when someone makes a white joke to me because I know they are just kidding and don't mean to be offensive. But I also know when something was offensive. Its common sense. If you can't distinguish the difference, then the person is ignorant. I also think people get too in their feelings over certain things.

J.Mc.'s picture

I could understand a black person being offended by the term nigger rigged but when someone is conscious of that and sensitive to their feelings and they make a conscious effort to change it to negro rigged with that being something that shouldn't be considered offensive, why should a overly sensitive white guy jump in the conversation and act like someone just busted up in the house wearing Klan gear and holding a noose?

Engineereddisaster's picture

Again this is another example where your hypocrisy comes into play. I'd really like to spell it out. Perhaps help you catch the vision.
First, I think it's safe to say that you don't know Greg. You don't know his background, and you don't know his personal life.
Greg posts his opinion and point of view in a calm and un-abrasive manner, and you come in and label him as a "Good Ole Boy" in an abrasive manner.

You did this to me yesterday. I personally don't even use the term "Negro Rigged" I didn't back the term, I just backed the O.P. because one guy flamed his ass not only for using the term "Negro Rigged", but started kicking the man while he was down because he opened up his heart in the forums.
You come in, not knowing me, or hardly anything about my personal background jump in and start labeling me as "David Duke" and a Klansman. More derogatory labels without even knowing anything about me.

The definition of Bigotry is this:

Intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

(This is where you pick up a mirror.)

Your opinion on the matter is different than many others yet you will not tolerate anyone having a different opinion.
Greg shares his opinion intelligently without any hate attached to it and you reply with:

"A lame BS excuse for poor behavior".

Sounds pretty intolerant doesn't it.

You are the walking definition of bigotry.

Finally, as far as the "Nigger Jokes" go. I suggest possibly finding new friends. We are living in 2013. I don't think I've heard one of those since the early 90's. But hey, I'm not going to judge your friends. It's not my place.

Greg's picture

As stated, it is offensive only when offense is meant. When it is not meant, it is a complement to "creative ingenuity." When I say I had to "jury-rig" something I am being boastful.

What you are failing to grasp is within what context is the comment coming from.
All I'm saying is a little less finger pointing and more understanding will go a long way.

Where do I sign up to be a PC cop anyway? Do you get to carry a badge? Do you have to pass a test? I hope not, I hate tests.

Greg's picture

Honestly I don't care. This post isn't directed at you. The situation is just another in a long line that I've seen lately of PC run amuck.

Being offended because of self righteous indignation is pompous.
Being offended because of some personal connection or history is justifiable BUT should be tempered within the context of the offense and not a knee-jerk reaction.

Greg's picture

You are not saying anything new I have not said or implied.

For one, the phrase is not in my current vernacular.
I don't believe there are any children reading this forum. So the assumption that adult speaking to other adults would do the same with kids in the room if false.

I don't believe that any individual or group has approached you and asked that you defend their cause which makes this YOUR cause. And a self righteous one at that.

By all means you have the complete liberty to correct your own flaws. But does this give you the right to invent a perceived offense and correct it in others?

I believe I have a good track record on this board pointing out offensive behavior. Deliberate, hateful, comments purposefully made to attack a sex, race, or simply mean spirited.

Although I applaud your sentiment I feel your judgement is off base in this matter.
