Hackers using ddos

So I've gotten multiple emails in the past 2 wks from different srcs saying that there sites are being attacked using ddos. I have no idea what this is im not all computer savy but seems like srcs are the new targets for these guys.
If anyone can tell me what a ddos attack is im interested to hear?
Also I have seen multiple src's being responsible and creating ddos attack prevention software added to there sites. I think with it happening so much I would think that all srcs would jump on the bandwagon and get this software its our information getting stolen also.
Be careful fellas with the passwords you use to access your src site make sure that they don't match your banking or anything else important.

Please elaborate!!! They access a site that isn't theirs accessing personal info/payments/ect. Fill me in on the difference
The term hackers has evolved to mean anyone who has the ability to cause harm or access computers or systems.. So the title correctly asks the question, "(why do) hackers use ddos..."
Additionally, the OP correctly refers DDoS as an attack throughout the body of his post.
A DDoS attack does not attempt to access the site, instead, it tries to prevent everyone else from accessing the site.
The kid who posted this remark was trying to be a smartass but, instead, made himself the fool.

I used to run a botnet when I was in high school in 2004-2005. It was a pretty good sized one that autospread to other computers through a couple of exploits in Windows. I used them primarily for installing adware, but I did have the capability to do ddos attacks but I rarely did. It was mostly business for me and ddos attacks were too risky and pointless to me. I was making up to 23k a month net installing adware when I was in high school lol

Just curious, did these different sources randomly reach out to You multiple times via EMAIL to tell you they were experiencing a ddos attack?

The other 3 I realized that when I log on now they all have a screen that starts with a message saying that there making sure your not a ddos attack. At first I thought nothing of it because I didn't even know what it was until I got the 2 emails saying its hackers
Well said about being mindful of passwords. My advice is always use combination of letters, numbers, and throw in like a ! # $. And in the letters, capitalize some. If paranoid of the site, use vpn before connecting to the site, there are free vpn's, but a decent one like cyberghost isn't bad for the yearly fee, and it gives you an extra layer of anonymity for prying eyes on your ip address. ChickenBird nailed what ddos is.
I have also got an email from a source here saying the same and would like to hear about what this is too. I use different passwords for everything just in case. I even use different passwords for here and a source site, just in case.
Ddos is a "distributed denial of service" attack. It floods a website with more traffic than it can handle, causing it to stop working
Like taking control of a bunch of web browser and having them log onto a website at the same time? Is that how it works?

These hackers can cause alot of problems.
Yes, you control a network of computers sending requests to the target site. Most computers owners in the network are not aware of their participation.
Thanks PEZ. I thought that's what I read somewhere before about this kind of attack. Wouldn't this only shut down the website and not allow the person to access our personal information?
Yes for the ddos. the databases can be accessed with SQL injections which is preventable but happens because of laziness.
