Grammar skills and the use of "your" vs "You're"

ad

It's incredible and disheartening that grown ass men can't use the right form of grammar on a text forum.
How am I suppose to take someone seriously on their experience with a compound if they come off as stupid because they can't even read or write? It's pathetic.

This is elementary stuff, please excuse me if English is not your first language. For those of you who grew up speaking English there is no excuse for your immaturity on this forum.

Your is the second person possessive adjective, used to describe something as belonging to you. Your is always followed by a noun or gerund.

What is your username?
Is this your review?
Your review is moronic.

You’re is the contraction of "you are" and is often followed by the present participle (verb form ending in -ing).
You’re going to be late.
Is that what you’re wearing?
I think you’re an idiot.

people come on here to relax nobodys entering an exam . if you dont like what you see then its you that needs to go elsewhere also people write in slang to be quick . mobile phone messaging has made everyone spell how its said to make it shorter . im from london england you cant get any more english than that and i assure you we dont give a shit .....

Ronburgundy's picture

HAHA, I see that all of the time. I am a stickler when it comes to writing; if I can't spell it or am unsure, I find something that works. I can admit, I do make mistakes sometimes. I take misspellings with a grain of salt on this site because I can tell there are a lot of foreigners on here. You got to give them credit for trying. I did see a review recently for "oreganon" sustanon. I don't know why, but that drives me nuts.

Ozninjaguy's picture

Oreganon...that's the spicy Sus...didn't you know?

You make some salient points, however, just because a person does not express the level of grammatical correctness that you require for credibility, does not negate the fact that they may, indeed, have a great deal of knowledge and experience to offer. This is a new age of communication - forums and SMS texts have developed a new 'language' - just because it doesn't fit with the old grammatical rules does not nullify it's validity as a form of communication. All languages are dynamic in nature- if they cannot evolve...they die..for example: spoken to anyone who speaks Latin lately? I'm a Grammar Nazi by occupation (retired college lecturer)...but, unless I am dealing with an academic piece of writing, I just accept the linguistic evolution.

vhman's picture

just accept the linguistic evolution.

No thanks. Accepting mediocrity means that is what we are.

I'm guessing that you are also appalled by the insidious incursion of the term 'mate' into American English. Originally a word used by the British, Australians and New Zealanders, I see almost everyone on this site referring to each other as 'mate.' Surely not all members here are Poms/Kiwis/Aussies...what ever happened to good old 'buddy', 'bud' and 'pal'? It's all part of the evolution of language (albeit on a micro-scale).

your write, we should call a meating to go over this... perhaps within a weak or too. i'll make sure two invite you to.

Hahaha holy cow the comments! Vag blaster will find it hard finding vag's to blast if he spends all his Saturday's playing grammar gestepo on forums all day. Or maybe I'm behind the times and chicks dig the men who spend their days on the Interweb.

While you're at it, English should be capitalized. It's not english, but English. Not to kill your high horse and butcher it for sausage or anything. Just saying.

VagBlister9000's picture

..fuck, you're dead right. I didn't realize "English" was a proper noun. I have dishonored myself and the forum, I must commit myself to death.

*stabs heart

NoWeakAces's picture

can't use the right form of grammar on a text forum.

cannot use correct grammar on a text forum.

Before you climb upon your high horse, get your own shit together.

MedDx's picture

Do you have anything else to get off your chest? If you do, right now is the time to do it! You have been here long enough to not bring up stupid posts like this. If it bothers you to read how people want to text, then don't get on here. Either mesh with us, learn and help, but don't start with the criticsm on how people want to type. Thanks for understanding Smile

true grit's picture

"Your" absolutely correct.

I'm pretty big on grammar as well, but most people post from smartphones. Auto correct is presumptive, and not always correct on intent. We all post shit on here that once read after the fact , is either grammatically incorrect or misspelled. Besides, I would take advice from a 280# neanderthal before a 150# scholar any day.

Gymjunkie01's picture

Lmao that's funny

A lot of people haven't lived a privileged life as you have, it doesn't make their opinions hold less value than yours.. you absolute sausage.

Aint it a grammar lesson

Ambsoph's picture

If you are going to lecture about grammar then you better go through all of your post on this site and make sure everything is perfect. I mean how can I take a person seriously if they can not use a cap after the period? Or the start of a sentence? I doubt you have been doing any "blasting" either.
