Free Will

ad

So...any religious(or non-religious) folk here want to get into this one? Yah or nay?

Carlos Danger's picture

Weed beer and Horse Shoes.

Pale's picture

And another one speaking of free will and what we have done with it..

Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.

Don't these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys,
Where there's one you're bound to divide it.
Right in two.

Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
And this is what they choose...

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
They forge a blade,
And where there's one
they're bound to divide it,
Right in two.
Right in two.

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey.
Over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys give them thumbs.
They make a club.
And beat their brother, down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.

Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

Cut and divide it all right in two [x4]

Fight over the clouds, over wind, over sky
Fight over life, over blood, over prayer,
overhead and light
Fight over love, over sun,
over another, Fight for each other,
for the ones who are rising.

Angels on the sideline again.
Benched along with patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end.

Cut and divide it all right in two [x3]
RIGHT IN TWO!

Right in two...

For an old fart you have a pretty good memory.

How old do you recon KMC is? That guy has to be at least 70. I was in the sixth grade when I started juicing and I remember Vike and Tread as newbs getting cycle advice from Him. He's always been kind of a cantankerous fella, but in a sweet way.

every man and woman has the choice of free will. nobody is making you do anything and if so you choose to let something influence you but that influence doesn't take away your free will.

IrishMack's picture

Pray for blood,
Pray for the cleansing,
Pray for the flood,
Pray for the end of this nightmare.
This lie of a life can as quickly as it came dissolve.
We seek only reprieve and welcome the darkness.
The myth of a meaning so lost and forgotten (forgotten).

Take hold of my hand,
For you are no longer alone.
Walk with me in hell.

Pray for solace,
Pray for resolve,
Pray for a savior,
Pray for deliverance, some kind of purpose.
A glimpse of a light in this void of existence.

Now witness the end of an age.
Hope dies in hands of believers.
Who seek the truth in the liar's eye.

Take hold of my hand,
For you are no longer alone.
Walk with me in hell.

Walk with me in hell [x5]

Take hold of my hand,
For you are no longer alone.

Lamb of God, you truly put out some good training music.

jansen's picture

Hell yeah my favorite lamb of god song!

Pale's picture

Except it has nothing to do with the discussion.

jansen's picture

Never said it did. Tell that to the one that posted it.

Pale's picture

Relax, I wasn't ripping on you or him. I like LOG too, I was going to point it out the other day but was busy, You mentioned and reminded me.

IrishMack's picture

I only posted it because discussions like this are borderline. Anytime in the past there were these types of posts peoples feelings got hurt or it turned into a debacle. I read it and said the next song that comes on my player Im posting it. Lucky for me it wasnt one direction.

Pale's picture

No worries bro, I was just trying to read into the message and was hitting a brick wall, lol.
Now at least I know you were just putting it out and not trying to add to the Free will discussion at least.

IrishMack's picture

I dropped the ball a little by not adding that lol.

jansen's picture

Its all good pale! No problem here! Your right i dont see how it relates to the subject. ... but its still my favorite song lol.

Bravo!...lamb of god is one of my absolutes

Pale's picture

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance

A planet of play things
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
'The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign...'
Blame is better to give than receive

[Chorus:]
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill

There are those who think
That they were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren't born in Lotusland

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate

[Chorus]

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet

[Chorus]

cdyrdes's picture

Neal pert absolutely owns that song! Rush!

tonytulo's picture

Best drummer ever IMO.....

Pale's picture

Not just best drummer, he is also one of the best songwriters. Most all of them great Rush songs are penned by him.

And here I was thinking this was about a new "Free Willy" film.....

With the religious undertones here I can see this getting real ugly.

Okay, before I go to sleep I'll try to simply my question here for anyone who doesn't believe in free will. We can get into omniscience / free will paradoxes and so on but essentially this problem remains:

What is the POINT of commandments and punishments; what is the point of anything if man has no choice in anything? If man is not a free agent then he's merely a robot following a program. So what is the point of any of it? There can be no PURPOSE without free will. Without free will we are left with NIHILISM. Is all vanity(hevel) as Kohelet said?

Makwa's picture

We are living in the MATRIX

Engineereddisaster's picture

Bring it.

Flexual's picture

Okay, it's getting late so I'll ask a question and check back tomorrow. I'm not sure what your position is but mine is the absence of free will is an absurdity and any attempt to describe a universe with man devoid of free will abounds with paradoxes and logical inconsistencies. Taking the bible as example, why would God formulate a complex system of law for the Israelites to abide by and punish them when they failed to do so? In the absence of free will such behaviour is not only illogical it's sadistic.

I'll check back tomorrow.

Engineereddisaster's picture

I guess I'd have to agree with you.
I personally think ones level of free will is directly proportional to ones happiness.
"What the in the hell are you talking about Ed?"
Good question kids.
I'm a little concussed (2 time in the last 3 weeks mind you) so bear with me as try to explain.
I think every one of us in life...our major goal is to be happy. You know mix the whole soup of life to what we believe makes the absolute best soup for us, and each of us are really working with different recipes and ingredients. Some soup tastes better than others.
At any rate, back to my statement. Ones happiness is directly proportional to ones free will.
Think about it. Here we are all on a body building site working to gain absolute control of how our body looks. This requires conquering habits that take away free will like sugar addictions, laziness addictions, etc. as a lot of guys here know conquering ones body brings quite a bit of freedom. You can run faster, you are stronger, you get more chicks because you look good. You feel better about yourself etc. The inverse..had you given up your free will to food addictions or laziness.. It's pretty hard to be happy when you are so damn fat that you have to drive a custom wal-Mart jazzy chair to the cereal isle to pick up your lucky charms.
Let's look at other aspects of life. Say you have. Drug addiction. This absolutely steals your free will. I have a friend who started shooting heroin at age 18. His whole life for the past 10 years has absolutely no free will. He wakes up every morning, steals shit all day and then buys heroin. Over and over again. His life sucks ass. The most free will that he has is when he is in prison.
A pretty shitty life if you ask me.
So..those are my thoughts through the cobwebs.
Back to your statement on the law of Moses.. I think there was some pretty significant reasoning in the strictness of the law. You have to keep in mind, here you have Moses trying to lead a large group of Slaves into freedom. People who were slaves their entire life. Hardly any free will at all. I think the strictness of the law served a few different functions. As a Christian I believe the law was first and foremost given as a way for the people to get forgiven of their sins because Christ hadn't made the sacrifice yet.
But that's just my take.
The other reason for the strictness was that the Israelites were slaves their whole lives. The only knew a life of other people telling them what to do. Moses had to get them the hell out of there, they needed to be told what to do right down to the T. That's all they understood. There had to be a strictness of the law, for example killing someone for banging someone's wife. Or killing someone for banging their mom...
Moses wAs trying to move thousands of people. Ain't nobody got time to be calling Maury to find out who the baby daddy is.
At any rate, I know I'm rambling...hope you got my point. I might change my answer tomorrow when my head quits hurting.
All my love no homo (Leviticus 20:13)
Ed

P.s. What were we are going about again??

Flexual's picture

Good post. I wish I had a bit more time to respond here. I agree with you but I'd also say one's ability at self control / self discipline is the key to success in the gym and in life in general.

why would God formulate a complex system of law for the Israelites to abide by and punish them when they failed to do so? In the absence of free will such behaviour is not only illogical it's sadistic.

Let's take the laws of our lands for example. Isn't that the exact same thing? We can choose to follow them or not. There are consequences to everything, religious, secular, physical, etc. We still have choice. Not sure why this is even a topic...

Flexual's picture

Unfortunately a lot of people don't believe in free will. Some of my friends included. We like to argue it out in a good natured way. I'm not really religious in a Judeo-Christian sense but I'm a bible nerd and enjoy debating this stuff.
