+ 2 DNA report

ad

I was gifted a DNA test from 23 and me and just got my results back.
pretty fascinating stuff as well as some useful info.

I knew I was mostly irish, so no surprise that my ancestry was 80% ireland. Was not expecting to see trace amounts of sub saharan african as well as a little dna from Vietnam.

The report includes some trivial stuff, like your likelihood to have certain hair colors, bald spots, unibrow and back hair.
The 23 and me results get into your genetic health risks just a little bit, things like the genes for parkinson's and alzheimer's disease.

You can also download your raw data and have it reviewed by outside apps. I used the one from Dr Rhonda Patrick on her page foundmyfitness. This women is a fricken genius, has a phd in biomedical science. I saw her on Joe Rogans podcast a couple times and she drops some serious knowledge.
Her DNA report is an extra 10 dollars and pulled up some good info for me.
I have certain genomes that can cause problems under certain dietary conditions. For example, If I over load with iron I am at 5x risk for getting alzheimer's. Keeping iron and ferritin levels in check and avoiding iron heavy foods is key, ( no cast iron cooking, no fortified cereals)
I have another genome that makes my body have an inflammatory response to .supplemental Vitamin E, reases some sort of bad ketone.
Another gene was related to poor absorption of Choline, something that I can supplement with, as is the Vitamin D that I am predisposed to be low on.

There were pages and pages of data, lots of good news too.

all in all it was some great knowledge to get my hands on. I recommend it to folks for themselves or as a gift.

That's pretty cool. Looks like they have all kinds of different packages ranging in price. I've been wanting to try this out myself.

I'm afraid they'll find Irish goat DNA... and some German.

Pale's picture

No they don't. Unless you have some real evidence to back up your story, piss off.

Pale's picture

That isn't sinister tho. They are using the human genome to make drugs and or gene therapy that could save lives. There are obviously issues that could crop up.

fusebox's picture

Yeah the government isn't buying shit. They pretty much take anything they really want

Pale's picture

That may be. But in all seriousness 23andMe is not selling or giving out your info. If they do anything they ask your permission or participation. Now obviously LEO is using the platforms to help solve cold case rapes and murders but they can do that with just simply paying to enter a DNA sample or submitting one to one of the free platforms like GEDmatch. Using DNA is still in its relative infancy when it comes to diagnosing potential disease susceptibility. But I am all for it being used to catch killers and rapists.

fusebox's picture

I absolutely agree about them using it to crack cold cases and hopefully lock up scum of the earth. All I'm saying is if the gov wants it they will get it.

Thats how I feel. I also know that google tracks my location on my phone too, but I dont go anywhere interesting so why care? If I had things to hide I would hide them, but nobody is coming for my gun, my test U, my adult porn, my legal weed, etc.

I love the idea of cold cases getting solved with the big DNA data base. You never know what kind of fucked up branches you might have in the family tree. I know there is one case of child rape on the wifes side of the family and she was happy to put her DNA on the list in case it matched any other crimes.

I have taken part in several of the ongoing surveys 23andMe are doing. The whole mapping of the genome is fascinating in all of the implications.

Promethes (sp) is another you can upload your raw DNA to and see all kinds of markers. Check out GEDMatch as well. That is free and they have all kinds of filters you can run through to look back at different things. Only catch is if you are a serial murderer or rapist, then again if you are one of those definitely put your DNA out there.

CBBurrr's picture

I'll have a look at GED match.
Good news for my son. My wife has better genetics than me, lol.
She even got "more likely to be an elite level athlete "
I'm less likely to have a hairy back

CBBurrr's picture

I've been mess around with the site for a bit now, if you choose to share they will list all of your DNA relatives that have participated and choose to share, They go wayyyyyy out there too, 5th and 6th cousins.

Intriguing to say the least. No doubt technology has advanced us into a territory once thought of as a dream or unreachable yet here we are. As well as anything there is a Pro and a Con. Benefits and misuses go hand in hand. Reminds me of the movie Gattica.

fusebox's picture

Now your DNA is loaded into a national data base also. Just saying. Not that you'd have anything to hide from but they do give this data to the government

Goose24's picture

I'm with you. Next comes the tracking chips. It will be sold as something helpful and needed. Lol like cell phones.

Who knows how accurate that info is anyways.

fusebox's picture

It's funny that you say tracking chips I have a close friend that thinks the chips in credit cards are now a government program to track us and our purchases

CBBurrr's picture

I considered that, and I'm OK with it. I'm ex military and have had FBI background checks so they have my fingerprints too.
I know my criminal history is misdemeanor level and if any of my kin have DNA involved in the kind of cases that use DNA then I'm down to see them busted.

Pale's picture

I agree, I have nothing to hide and 23andMe and several other DNA sites are making great inroads into the science behind our DNA. I want to be a part of those discoveries.

Goose24's picture

I see where you guys are coming from. I can respect that. I just have a hard time trusting any company with anything nowadays. Most places can't keep even the most basic info private and most could care less about keeping it private.

Pale's picture

If there was a financial risk I would be done with it. But short of some unforeseen future issue the benefit and even entertainment factor of it outweigh the negatives.

fusebox's picture

I get it from your perspective as well I just want the info out there so everyone knows before they give up their personal privacy. If someone has a reason to be busted based on dna evidence I agree with you also. I just don't want to give up my person info

It's an awesome time we live in. I can only imagine the near future.

What sample is used for dna test ? Sounds expensive but really interesting

CBBurrr's picture

You send them a vial of spit.
My mom got me this one as a gift, I think it was on sale during amazon sale day for about $50
so, not too expensive.
