I am not former military just raised by a vietnam vet (semper fi). And yea, as soon as he thought I was old enough to understand him (looking back I didn't) he would tell me the difference between Hollywood and all hell breaking loose. We liked to make fun of the Muji's for "praying and spraying" but truth is in a firefight our guys often times were doing the same thing. Notice they took full auto off many of the rifles and went to tri-burst.
More so during the Vietnam era not so much the modern day military in comparison. The psychological difference that they concluded was that men who were drafted were less apt to hold a sense of commitment and discipline. Now this is of course not a rule but a statistical theory. Those who enlist willingly are more apt to hold unit disciple and cohesiveness.
The same reason many men who enlist would rather be part of an elite combat unit, squad etc. The mentality is that the men next to them are better trained and disciplined thus insuring a greater survival rate.
