70's The Golden Era...
I personally enjoy the 70's physiques, a lot more than these current mass monster. I do however think some of these mass monster look pretty cool. Ronnie Coleman would have to be my favorite mass monster, with Tom Platz as runner up, but lets take it back, when bodybuilding was just that bodybuilding. I'm personally chasing after the 70's V-shape, vacuum physique. It's my ambition to bring it back into the spotlight and take the focus off size. I would say Arnold was the biggest motivation for me, and what I realized watching Pumping Iron, or Totally Rebuild or any of the old competition, their physiques are realistically attainable over the course of 5 to 10 years with gear obviously. I notice they focus a lot of attention on simple routines, involving mainly heavy compound lifts, and simple chins and dips. I personally do not follow any of these new workout routines, I stick with the bases. I want to look like a 70's bodybuilder, I have to train like one. I also notice primobolan was the drug of choice for Arnold and many of his friends and I would assume that's why it's price so high. That's besides the point, getting back to the article at hand. I would have to say Jusup Sepp Wilkosz, is what I'm going to look like in a few year. I find his physique more appealing to me than any other, even though he neglected calves. Well he didn't neglect them, just didn't put that much energy into making them grow. I would like to hear your opinion on the old school verse the new school, and what physiques inspired you the most. . Jusup Is on your left. Ed Corney on the right.

This forum inspired me to look up the older female bodybuilders from the early 80's and i came across Rachel Mclish who was the first Ms. Olympia. Shes now 58 and totally in awesome shape and still smoking hot...idk if she uses gear but if she is its not much which is inspiring to me because my body doesn't seem to like gear...so thank you for your article which gave me even more inspiration and motivation ;0) +1
I'm happy it inspired you. My motivation comes from within, it's something I can't put into words; I know it's there because I feel it everyday... Keep up the hard work, and I always like to refer back to a saying.. "Once pains leaves your body, success takes it place"...
I like your style champ. We have good taste in men. No homo. Kinda.
This includes females bodybuilders as well
The the golden era physique is still alive and kicking bro, its just not called bodybuilding anymore but fitness modeling instead.
Check out these "fitness models"
Ulisses Jr

Mike O'Hearn

Looks pretty classic to me. A 1970s Arnold would be a 2014 fitness model!
The bodybuilders of the 70s looked the best physique wise, before all that "let's shoot insulin before every meal" and "let's take 30ius of HGH" and pin every peptide known to man trend started.
The guys now a days who are running it all are huge and blocky, with strange looking abs.
The 1970s were about good genetics, a ton of food, and high dose steroid cycles.
I think what it really comes down to, bodybuilding as it stands now with the 300 lbs plus physiques, theres really no where to go with it, what, 400-500 lbs at 4-5%? I think that would be completely unrealistic and very detrimental to ones health. I mean they couldn't expect to live very long, so I see bodybuilding heading back to its roots. Arnold was 240 during his competitions, 260 of season and he push the same weight some of these guys are pushing now, at 300 plus. That makes me think, if they take AAS, out of bodybuilding, what would happened to the sport? IMO it would devastate it and possibly sit it back quite a bit. The physiques would no doubt look more realistic, returning to a more conditioned and natural look, not to mention not as dangerous to obtain. I personally believe, there are always some long term side effects associated with AAS, no matter who you are...If you take them long enough and at the dosages these pros ares, something is bound to happened, though it may be very mild and go unnoticed, but there will be something. That's why I emphasize taking cation, and using in moderation, taking time off... I would be concerned with my health being that big... I will be happy at a solid 240 during season... I don't ego lift, I worry about the stretch and contraction.. Don't get me wrong I go heavy but not where I'm defeating the purpose of the exercise, by destroying my form. IMO the 70's was the best era...
1972 Sergio Oliva still to this day the most impressive physique of all time! 27 in waist with 30 plus in thighs! Arms were bigger than his head! Arnold looked like he had chicken thighs standing next to Sergio's flairing legs. Too bad politics robbed Sergio, but bodybuilding needed the charisma of Arnold. 1980 and 1981 almost killed the sport forever. That iconic picture of Sergio in the victory pose simply amazing!
Wholeheartedly agree with you bro, shame the golden era is over and done.
Feel like buying a yellow Golds stringer now lol.
RustyhookerThe era of Franco thru Labrada i enjoyed. Symmetry and balanced. The gh gut just ruined it for a long time.
I think the 80' and 81' O were bullshit. Bunch of politics if ya ask me. Arnold sucked ass that year, were at least 5 other guys in the line up better than him and for the 81', Franco had gyno for fuck sake lol!
I as well think the guys back in the 70's had more pleasing apperances, they was still big dudes but just a nicer look to me
eryximachusWhat's also of note is those guys were not dropping dead in the 40s...
It was a golden age because the gear was pharma and people weren't shooting a gram of tren a week!
Back in Arnold's day Test wasn't readily available or used like it is today. Back then they were basically running blind and were guinea pigs. Stacks consisted of Primo, Decca, and Dbol. I think that's why late 80's- 90's we start seeing mass, because Test was starting to be used more.
Everyone started turning massive when Tren started to hit the market as well. And with the big influx of UGL's, gear became cheaper and widespread so it was no longer out of reach to the masses.
aylmejorno... everyhone started turning massive, when insulin came into the piture along with higher dose of GH.
and that is when things turned ugly with all the GH guts hanging out and mis-shapen cores.............. lets call that the "ugly era" and hope to fuck we can get back to some tight waisted, rock hard washboard abs................ and especially SEOs which totally fuck up what pure bodybuilding is really all about.
In honestly believe the extended abdomen are caused from from than just gh. Also slin use (very heavy usage) and the retarded amounts of food these guys take it.
Of course its from more than just GH....... but the fact is that the famous ugly distended gut as now picked up the nicknames of "GH gut" or "Palumboism"..... due to the fact that he is one of the worst case scenarios................... its not just men that get it either!.. i know women on high dose GH/slin that also have the massive distension and some of these women are under 30yrs old...... it is the ugliest thing on the fkn earth let me tell you.
Yeah man pulumboism is some bad shit. I honestly thinks cutler is starting to go backwards. Happens to everyone who pushes to much for to long. Kovacs as no as he was ha a terrible body. Yeah it's cool to walk around at 300lbs (Marcus rhul too) but you're never going to win.
Amen, SEO is a close to cheating as is gets IMO
and that has to be the ugliest thing I have seen, those massive bellies.
I was in a line up last year with this fkn beast!.... he was massive but looked pregnant!.... when he tried to do Ab shots that thing was rolling about like a cat in a fkn sack?....... dont need to tell you i blew that fucker away lol
We've got a lad like that in our gym. 6-4, steps on stage at 280-285lbs but his abdomen is so ugly from GH. Bloody shame as the guy has an amazing back and delts.
Did you wink at him when you beat him and flex your abs again to show what a real stack looks like? lol
I have OCD were getting my Abs in is concerned bro......... if they are not like concrete i wont show!... i dont mind sacrificing a few pounds to have em spot on..... i like em that hard i cant even get a slin pin under the skin.
I will admit i am envious of your determination. If I could only apply that to myself i think I would be pretty fkn huge and cut in one years time. The excuse I tell myself is slow gains are better gains.
My peak was the 90s bro, i was seriously competitive then!... thats when i won 3 major national titles, these days is just holding onto what i have and keeping injury free....... suze is driving force with comps in our house now, she did 8 big shows more or less back to back over the past 2yrs....... now thats a real challenge holding condition while still trying to improve then dropping back to sub 4% at a moments notice........ fkn awesome but she did it and hit the big time making a name for herself at last years universe ..... time out now and shes big and beautiful, shoulder pressing 100Kgs like its a poxy bag of sugar lmao.
this may be true, but I'll stay away from Taboo topics
Lets not forget one of my all time favorites from the 70's-80's A body I wanted for many years
RustyhookerFranco and Labrada. Traditional Greek God statues!
He is your height I believe, that could be you!
RustyhookerIm pushing for it. Goal is 210 by Christmas sub 12%.
If you need any help let me know

thats a lot of weight on you.. I checked your stats man you must be a damn brick wall at your current weight
RustyhookerMy joints are super small too. My biggest was 203 after water dropped 10%. Hiking was a chore! I liked the look for sure but anything outside was like a weighted pack being worn everywhere.
i feel ya.. even tho im 6,4 i weighd in today at 280 pounds and i feel a lot better when im around 250-260 same thing stares kill my knees and running is almost impossable. my BF is around 13% right now been bulking all winter long
RustyhookerDamn! You're a massive dude! Gonna try stage or just enjoy the pump?
Oh no.. I will never be stage worthy .. Not why I do it. I do it for stress relief and the love of lifting weights.. It's just me v/s a hunk of metal either u can lift it or not.. That's all
RustyhookerI applaud that! If i don't lift, about 3 days off i start turning into a badger. Woman will literally push me out the door calling me skinny pussy. I come back wiped out so it works. Lol
Franko IMO had a better body than Arnold in 75 Mr. O.. I know i'm going to catch shit for that from someone, but it's just my opinion. But at the same time I thought Lou had a better body than Franko. He was a strong ass dude.
RustyhookerAgree! Arnolds return was also subpar for the oak.
For his height he was massive. That's what Rustyhooker would look LOL.
Arnold and Franco worked out together a lot so I have a ton of pictures of them together but i figured I would just throw that one out there.
Personally I felt that Arnold and his guys didn't have legs to match their upper bodues, that's just me tho.
My favorite was the 90's! Size PLUS conditioning, you don't see that anymore. Today a lot Of pros Sacrifice conditioning for size. A shame but it's the ways things are now. I can see guys like Phil and Shawn trying to bring back the conditioning but we will see
Believe me I noticed that too. Their legs we're a little off, But their chest and back... was just killer. I remember the nineties too dude, Dorian Yates, Lee Haney, my personal favorite nineties bodybuilder, Tom Platz... I think after the nineties the mass monster was the new thing and it only grew from there.
I agree that the 70's V taper look is very appealing. Haney and Platz were already out the door by the 90's. Yates changed the face of bodybuilding when his off season pictures from 1993 were released. There had never been so much mass packed on anyone before. It truly was a sight to see, and the competition knew that they had to step up their game and pack the beef on if there was ever gonna be a chance. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see physiques like the 70's-80's guys are just too big now.
