+ 5 Workout Journal

ad

What do you guys use to track your workouts? Currently I'm using a pocket notebook, however it gets a bit tedious drawing up tables and such. I usually record the number of sets, reps, weight etc, anyone found an (android) app for this?

"Yeah, I never understood why people would bring a notebook and pen to the gym to track their workout when they are already carrying their cellphone with them"

I don't have a smartphone..that's why ; )

thefusion's picture

True. You need a smart watch to go with iFitness right? I've been using the Gym Freak app for android and it satisfies my needs so far. Only downside is people think you're texting all the time, as people said earlier haha.

Just all in my head. Never used a note book or anything other then memory. Never even thought about it, probably would have been beneficial When I was younger.

I haven't seen an app but if you're good with Excel spreadsheets I have a buddy that tracks his macros intake and training with excell. To much for me but he is kinda ocd about it

Ah I track my program in excel as well, I just plot it all out in my gym app then copy it to excel.

I've also just recently started with tracking my cycles and ancillaries in excel - colour coded for the compounds and ancillaries with calculations and quantities for dosages and which days the shot is supposed to happen.

When I was finished building my cycle excel spreadsheet I was like "oh shit, I'm now one of those people" then I laughed and saved my work and went to eat.

My boy does the exact same thing I wish I was more tech savvy and new more about the program excell I've only used it for very simple things at work but its amazing what he can do with it

I've tried the "Gym Freak" app on Google play which was pretty good. It's nice and simple to use, just have to create a workout, load it and build each days routine at the next screen. Then you punch in whatever you did (weight and reps) each set into those box things. You can store multiple routines for periodization or separate Bulk/Cut routines, plus it's ad free. I've dabbled with JEFIT but it does take some getting used to.

Here's a screenshot of some of my workout today (the workout screen).

This is too funny that you wrote this up. I have several small 6" notebooks that I log diet, training routines, tips whatever pops into my head that i may want to look back on. Anyway for whatever reason I was flipping through one from this time last year and it is a really good feeling to look back and see how well I have progressed in one year. Most things go the opposite as we age but I am so glad I am getting stronger and healthier the older I get. Cant wait to read this weeks entries next year and see where I am at then. +

I still carry a binder with modified printouts from bodybuilding.com.....kinda old school to use pen and paper but that's my style ..lol...I get looks from the young guns sometimes but they can kiss my wrinkled old sack!....whew, ..maybe I should lower my dose...

foutjes's picture

Keep rocking the paper ;). Makes me remember way better also. And while training a good way to leave that attention seeking machine at home or in the gym bag.

I love JEFIT personally once you figure it out! Just like makwa is saying I'm sure people think I'm texting. lol. I use old school rest pause work and stuff and it works wonders for it. Also you can track measurements of body parts which keeps logs on a calendar! It's the shit!

thefusion's picture

Okay, I'm going to try it in my workout later. Thanks

You can enter your whole workout ahead of time including sets, reps, rest between sets. That is what I do anyway. I set up my whole 6 wk periodized training routine ahead of time. The countdown timer between sets is nice to keep you focused and on track to make sure you keep the intensity up.

Depends on your needs...

Reps and sets - very basic routine tracker. Linear progression only
Strong - loads of features and graphs and charts. Initially launched with the option to track linear or periodisation but has since lost the periodisation feature. I have been asking for the last 2 years for the return but I've been ignored so I dumped the app.
Jefit - didn't seem to get on with it. I couldn't figure it out quick enough so got frustrated
Gym Hero - Seemed to only track linear progression
Gym Tracker - Seemed to track only linear progression and was basic and fiddly
Gym Log+ - Jesus what a mess of UI so I dumped it
Gymaholic - BS application and too basic
Workout Log - No periodisation at the time I downloaded it
FitList - Mess of a UI and no periodisation
Flex - great UI and features for linear progression but no periodisation
Pump - absolute BS

I have since settled on HeavySet - I got the pro version but with a settings change I can track periodisation and the UI is neat and you can mix and match LBS and KGs which is actually pretty useful because my fancy ass gym has KGs and LBs in different areas of the gym. So for deadlifts I have to use KGs and for bench and Squats I use LBS.

My focus is periodisation so that's the main requirement when I am looking at fitness apps.

If Strong brings back the setting for periodisation then it's would be a great app but HeavySet is the one I use now.

thefusion's picture

Thanks man, although I cant seem to find HeavySet on Google Play. Do you have it on iOS?

mini muscle's picture

Ah shit yeah, just took a look at runloop's website and looks like it's only for iOS

Makwa's picture

Jefit Pro. Everyone thinks I am always texting on my phone but I am actually logging my workout.

giardap's picture

I do it the opposite way
I set a periodised/progrerssive program covering 6-7 weeks usually and follow it
I do note any bigger changes (caused by strength jumps etc.) but as I train for hypertrophy the ranges tend to be 8-15 depending on tut, so the flexibility and constant change in the prog stops you from needing to journal too much

I do tend to journal my ai's though as they can be so flipping hard to dial in!

kibby's picture

×10!

I also have 2 little pocket books...........

1, for cycles and everything included also what lab and product I'm running.
I'll write down how I'm feeling at certain points of the cycle....strength increas ect.

2, for workouts and food.....but I tend to do the same routine for 8 weeks then I'll switch things up and do the next routine for another 8 weeks

Very good!!
I'd say that journal of cycles would make for a fascinating read after a few years!!

kibby's picture

Definitely mate,

Just makes things 10× easier to look back and see how you ran things especially if your going to repeat the same cycle
