Ted Fat Acceptance Video

ad

Ok before you watch or comment I just want to say I in no way shape or form think degrading or bullying overweight individuals is ok. But what this woman is trying to convince the public of is not right in my opinions. I agree that having a positive self image is important to health but I do not think it is right to condone obesity and say things like in studies a 140lb person is as healthy as a 300 lb person at 5'4 as long as they eat fruit and excise because she says not about sample size of those groups.

TLDR: Its not ok to make fun of fat people but it also is not ok to condone being overweight.

Im curious to hear your opinions and see how everyones weights in on this issue that I think is starting to become more and more relevant as to population is looking at being healthier because it is creating a divide.

Correlation between obesity and stupidity?

I would just like to ask her how many 5'4 300 pounders she knows over age 60, let alone 65?

I watched to the whole thing.

It just seems like she is trying to make her mind think that it's okay to be fat. She mentions that as long as a person does 4 things: dont smoke, eat healthy, limit drinking, and exercise regularly, she said as long as they do those things it doesnt matter if the person is 130 lbs or 300lbs they are both healthy.
Maybe that's true, but let's be honest how many 300 pounders do you know that get moderate exercise daily and are they truly eating a healthy diet??? NO

She tried to say fat people have health advantages over skinny when a fat person has a stroke they usually recover quicker/better, or a fat diabetic is better than skinny diabetic. I think those are possibly true but rare instances and 99% of the time being fat is unhealthy.

Sounds like she just does not know how to diet and exercise.

I personally know a 45 year old that was over 700lbs. He's been over 300 since his early 20's. A whole life of obesity. Up until a few years ago he started dieting and lost 100+ lbs in the first year. He then started a light daily walking routine once his weight was low enough that his joints could support the stress of exercise.

Now hes below 400 lbs!!! Close to 350, still following a diet and daily exercise. So I think it's bullshit everything that lady said in the video. If a 700lb man at almost age 50 can diet and exercise to lose weight, then ANYONE can. The lady just doesn't know how to follow a decent diet and exercise routine. Which is too bad because she doesn't look terrible and would be a lot better if she had the drive and determination to lose the weight.

Did you find it hard to force yourself to listen to the whole thing as well? I was like AH WTF COME ON SERIOUSLY the whole time especially when the pics of the chicks with the signs came up.

I couldn't listen to her. It is not OK to be fat. She needs a shot of self esteem.

Stopped watching after I saw a fat speaker.

I love how she manipluates statistics to fill her argument, example) overweight people with type II diabetes will live longer than thin people with type II diabetes...Well people without diabetes live longer then both of them.... People now adays have no discipline, and thats why Americans are so fat. Imagine how long people would live today wif they ate a healthy diet as well as haveing the advances in medicine and technology we have today.

When she said that about diabetes I thought, "Well shit that applies to a lot of things, like being hit by a fucking car, if you are fat then it might not do so much damage. But what about a situation like a athletic person and a obese person have to escape a tigers cage."

The logic for so many of her arguments are literal logical fallacies. She is assuming that A has a direct correlation to Outcome B that she is ignoring so many other variables.

It just really pisses me off that someone trying to better their health that is still overweight might see this bullshit and think, "Oh, well I guess it's ok to be fat and this lady has shown me research shows it is not bad for me so I will stop working out and eating healthy."

BTW I meant to post this in Off Topic
