+ 8 Someone enlighten me
Why do you tell these guys to stay away from salt or any sodium at all? I see it all the time, "get your diet dialed in, cut out salt". But again,...WHY? I really don't understand this logic unless the guy is headed to the stage in less than a week. Even more so I see this as ridiculous when someone who is over weight staying away from salt. What, do you think salt makes you fat? It's a Fucking mineral and an essential one at that! Are you kidding me? Salt doesn't make you fat. Sorry to burst your bubble! Stuffing your face all day and scarfing down huge crazy amounts of sugars and carbs makes you fat. Especially if you aren't active. Lets take a closer look at this salt thing because I for one can't function properly or at full capacity without it. I don't know about any of you but I do this to stay strong, fast, and durable for whatever life throws at me. Looking good is just a byproduct. It isn't the objective. So a fat ass walks into the exam room. His pressure is elevated (naturally,...he's a fat ass). What does the doc do other than pump him with all the cholesterol and bp meds his sponsor company is selling these days? He tells him to cut salt from his diet. Do you know why? Because it lowers your pressure. It has nothing to do with the fat on your ass or that you have consumed large quantities of salt over the years. It lowers blood pressure but this is how. When you don't take in sodium, you are not retaining any water. Or at least you are making your adrenal gland work overtime to produce sodium to help you retain some fluid and function normally. So the adrenals can't keep up with demand. What happens? The blood starts to thicken. Heart rate slows. Body starts slowly shutting down. Pressure drops because now your blood is like freakin aunt Jemima! So not only have you starved your body of precious water that it needs to function at a high rate (you are athletes you dumb shits,...you need the essentials more than average joe), but you are hurting your body in the process. So like i said, unless you have to make weight for a fight or you are getting on stage soon, there is absolutely NO reason anyone should be cutting salt out EVER! First thing in the morning, when I open my eyes do you know what I do? Of course you don't. I shovel down a teaspoon of salt and wash it down with a glass of water. That is before coffee. Before taking a piss. Before even getting up out of bed. I'll try and explain this in layman's terms. When you sleep your potassium climbs and your sodium drops. The ratio being so out of whack coupled with the fact that you aren't eating any salt, this is going to make you feel like you're just foggy, fatigued, inattentive, achy and a bunch of other things that are no good. So your body tries to counter by forcing the adrenals to produce aldosterone. But an already stressed adrenal gland can't produce the amount necessary. Sodium is removed from the blood and secreted through the urine. Now your adrenals are over worked. You no longer have their function for the day. You can forget it. You may as well chalk today up and "I feel like dog shit!". So by taking a spoonful of seasalt I am essentially making my adrenals work much much less and they repay me by giving me 100% throughout the day. What does that mean? Anything that arises I can handle and I can rest assured that my wits wont fail me, my fight or flight is working up to par and I have less stress hormones flowing freely. Also, drink plenty of water . If you are taking in salt and drinking water, you aren't going to balloon up like the elephant man. You are going to have adequate amounts of each and expel the excess through urine the healthy way. Which also helps clean your blood, liver and helps your body run at full capacity. I got a little deeper into this than I wanted to but I think it's important to discuss. PPl have the wrong idea about diet. Yeah you may look bad ass all dry and shit, but I don't envy how you feel. I know I am much healthier and in better shape physically than the salt less wonder. Until next time (i'll get into fats, especially saturated fats. yet another key ingredient they tell you to steer clear of), Peace!

Salted vs unsalted is just preference. The benefits of the butter are the saturated fats. Not the salt
Gotcha, thanks. What amount do you feel it should be limited to on a daily basis? I love butter, but cut it out because I was eating the wrong shit, so now I'm excited about incorporating it back into my diet. Thanks again.
I use 3 globs of it which I measure out by using a table spoon. So basically it's a heaping table spoon per mug (2 cups) of coffee. I use 3 because my thermos holds 6 cups (3 mugs) of coffee. Add a little (literally a little) sugar ,dump the coffee in and slap that butter in there. Blend it for a few seconds and done. Then I get the salted version and pile tons of it melting all over my super fat fuck breakfast sandwich (4 eggs, x-bacon, onions, potato on a long roll). Damn I'm hungry
Hell yea! Just made my day. Butter, who knew? I sure didn't
Thank you nitti, don't ever leave eroids, your are what modes are made of. This is the reason eroids out shine other forums.
RustyhookerAs stated already below, processed foods. But if you're eating healthy then yes, added salt after cooking. I'm outdoors laborer and lose salt fast. It may seem stupid to clean eating folks in a cubicle with very lil sweat loss but in summer i feel great eating sunflower seeds. 2 bananas a day too.
I fully agree. I'm outdoors too. In the summer water intake is measured by how man gott coolers full we went through that day. It's easy to wash all the nutrients away on those hot days.
Sodium and calcium are the core nutrients for muscle Cells. Without one the other can't function. A sodium deficiency affects on even a cellular level.
I tried an almost salt free diet for awhile. No matter how much water I drank, I was dehydrating too easily. The second I resumed using table salt again I felt a difference.
It is almost funny seeing how many people struggle to avoid salt, and loading up on creatine at the same time.
Anonunless you're struggling with high BP thats water retention related, or drying out for a show.. SALT LOAD BABY!
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with adding all the extra salt.. It just Dosent make sense to me to add the extra stress on the body and kidneys that excess sodium intake causes. .. In no way shape or form am I advocating to avoid it just say in moderation is the best key especially when on cycle.. Glad we can have this spirited discussion good to. See all points
Anonyou obviously didn't understand my sarcasm of "SALT LOAD,"
didn't know that was an actual topic of debate since I just made it up.
The RDA for sodium is 6G per day which is a shitload if you're on any sort of diet, so to have enough to actually "put strain on your kidneys" is pretty far fetched assuming the typical individual (on average) consumes 8G a day..
ill be more concise so you don't disagree again... Unless you plan on eating 20 of these a day... salt is fine
The upper limit for sodium for the RDA is 2300 mg or 2.3g Where did you get 6g?
Now tell me how you insert fancy pictures into your responses.
Anonhmmm.. thats the number I had in my head. Sorry, I've been up since 4am lol. Perhaps thats the # where individuals start experiencing the issues like pissing out large proteins etc.
I have those days myself. No worries.
Now tell me how to insert pictures.
find the thread by BFG in off topic " I bet you didn't know this"
Thank You.
Who says it puts stress on your kidneys?? It just gets expelled in the urine. You're not making sense
Kidney function is dependent on a delicate balance between sodium and potassium. Not having sodium in the diet is definitely counterproductive to one's health just as much as having too much sodium.
But here's the kicker not only is it damaging to the kidney but there are now several studies indicating that excess sodium consumption can lead to heart damage. Here's one such study.
"These results suggest that sodium intake may amplify the effect of arterial pressure on both the left ventricle and the kidney, and thus suggest that dietary sodium may be an independent factor of cardiovascular risk."
http://ajh.oxfordjournals.org/content/15/3/222.abstract
.
Anoncorrect.. too much salt and large proteins get released in the urine..
anyways, like i said above (although off topic) it would be pretty fkn hard for someone who claims to live the "AAS LIFESTYLE" to hit 10+ Grams of sodium a day... Unless they drink soy sauce as a beverage
this is where the magic happens baby!
I used to have this diagrams like this memorized front to back. Good ole A and P. haha
And we didn't cover potassium or calcium doe that matter. Simply because nobody tells you to steer clear of potassium. But you do realize that your body is essentially mostly salt water right? I know the delicate balance if electrolytes is key to a healthy life. So why is nobody standing up and saying "DONT STOP EATING SALT! IT IS ESSENTIAL!" I'm not talking about in excess. I never once said anything about over doing it with salt. I'm talking about ppl who say to cut salt so the BP drops. And how about that? Why is nobody speaking of the ridiculousness of that comment? Of course your BP drops when you lower salt consumption. Your blood is like syrup! Da faaq!
The recommendations for cutting salt are aimed towards the general population which eats highly processed and refined foods which are loaded with sodium. So that's where those guidelines come from. And a lot of foods don't contain enough potassium and that's where you run into problems.
For people that lead a healthy lifestyle I think Salt should be included as natural organic foods (mostly) are low in sodium. When I prep guys for shows I never tell them to mess with their sodium if there are eating clean. They will tend to wash out as the body tries to counterbalance.
Also like stated my previous comment the type of salt you ingest makes a big difference as well.
And what is your take on saturated fat? And as I stated in a previous comment I also agree about the kind of salt and how important it is. I use Mediterranean Sea salt because I can't find Himalaya salt. But anyway,....
Himalaya salt is great........ if you want a source PM me ;)
But all kidding aside. I think it depends on the type of saturated fat... If it is from organic, grass fed, or wild game type of sources it's necessary if it's from your typical foods supermarket sources that's not very healthy for you and should be avoided. Remember fats store all sorts of things in them. So when you consume them you're also consuming the things they store that's why it's important that you source your saturated fats from healthy sources.
Having said that it is also important to consume two thirds your calories from fat in the form of unsaturated fats. Also have to keep the ratios between the Omegas proper... Everyone preaches the benefits of fish oil (including myself) but the omega's in fish oil are not properly balanced so unless you balance them out you're not getting the full benefit associated with them.
If you're referring to their effect on heart disease. A lot of that has to do with inflammation in the body coupled with saturated fats.
Sorry to jump around all over the place I'm just trying to cover a few broad points about fats.
The point I was trying to make is it's a medical proven fact that excess sodium intake can cause severe health problems it's a trickle down effect stemming from hypertension that causes other problems in the body that's all.
.
Let's not forget salts best friend, Potassium. This post also reminds me of one of my bookmarks I go back to at least once a month.

BuckyDentureI usually suggest they "watch their salt intake" not cut it out completely . I agree that some salt is important for the body, and of course food cooked without salt is crap. I even put a tiny bit of salt in my oatmeal while its cooking . I think its just that a lot of people just end up taking in way more than they need. I know personally my daily salt intake has a huge effect on my blood pressure , Ive had it almost 20 pts higher after eating salty foods . The physiological reason is all well and fine I understand why salt raises BP, I just dont want it. so when Im taking proviron which can raise BP and a compound that is known to increase red blood cels thus thickening the blood I think it can be important to "watch the intake". Especially for someone like me who has high bp to begin with.
Then of course theres the factor that some compounds like Deca for example are known to cause water retention and bloat, I tend to think thats also someone who doesnt need to increase that undesired side effect by adding more salt.
And yes I fully agree the whole No Salt thing was way overboard and blown out of proportion, but that probably because most Americans consume way more than they realize and need. I think it could be far more dangerous to encourage salt intake than it is to suggest avoiding it (although we are not average Americans ). So perhaps it also arose from the law of averages amongst the general population, coupled with a lack of common sense when it comes to the foods people eat.
oh yeah and we never ever buy skim milk in our house. Fat is not a bad thing either , the whole low fat craze is silly too.
So you are confirming that salty food increase your blood pressure? I haven't seen the studies. I have seen the argument in the other direction however. The reason being cutting salt will lower BP
And fat! Yes saturated fat (the kind they tell you to stay away from) are absolute essentials especially for cognitive function. Critical medium chained fats that we lack because we cut saturated fat from our diet. No wonder we are the dumb fat kids in today's generation. That's how we are viewed anyway
BuckyDentureYes without a doubt. I measured my BP and sat on the couch relaxing eating Planters nuts, loaded with salt and within 2 hours maybe even 1 hour my BP was way higher. I did this experiment twice and got the same results.
Obviously planters mixed nuts are loaded with salt, although it does claim on the can to be sea salt, but still its a lot. Anyway point being I am in the circle that belives we probably get enough salt just by normal food intake. Im sure even a Turkey and swiss sandwich from the deli at lunch has enough salt in it.
So again my stance is "watch your salt intake" , not cut it out completely, or purposely load up on it. For example I saw a member who was running a deca cycle, and he thought he was getting gyno. My suspicion was more that he hadnt been watching his salt and got a little bloated.
RustyhookerYessir. You've seen my cycles. On a dry stack i love eq. Blood gets thicker so i keep water up. Ate clean chicken, fish etc from scratch. One night made chucken tacos in wheat wraps. Side of refried vegetarian beans. Beans were loaded in salt. Bp spiked to 160 with headache to match. Drank a ton of water to flush tge salt and after a few bathroom trips I'm back diwn to my normal cycle bp...roughly 140. 120 iff cycle.
The type of salt you utilize also makes a big difference. If you are buying cheap supermarket salt that is processed is actually very unhealthy for you. If you are utilizing natural salt, like Kala Namak which may be totally unprocessed it is actually loaded with minerals and is healthy for you, and for most people doesn't seem to affect blood pressure.
Just my two cents.
Here is a tip for those of you that are looking to cut salt intake. If you cook without salt and then add salt later you tend to use less than if you add it during the cooking process.
Eating salt doesn't raise blood pressure. You realize this right? It's that cutting salt lowers it. That why they say to cut it out of the diet. And I agree by the way. The kind of salt is important.
I think this is where we do not agree. Consuming EXCESS salt will definitely raise blood pressure. Anytime you do anything in excess with the body it will try to counterbalance in the case of salt its elevated blood pressure (along with other things).
in the end i find people dont want to take the time to understand something, in this case what sodium is for the body, and just like to parrot others. its everywhere TBH.
I put a little salt on my pizza especially a chicken marsala slice. I think salt has gotten such a bad rap because most people's diets are all processed foods which contain a ton to begin with. For the most part I avoid those so I break out the salt shaker whenever I feel the need. Seriously, I could not imagine eggs without salt.
This is a great post one that anyone who is more inclined to endurance, strength, and cardiovascular training can understand. For any here that have served in the sand box you know the drill on sodium ,potassium to water ratio levels. I also know that for those who love to drink abundant amounts of water you will flush these essential minerals out of your system. So this plus restricting your levels is a recipe for all types of problems. Like what was written above the strain on the bodies organs and other functions are multiple because of this.
I am sure if restrictions are done for BB purposes they are necessary to win a contest. I have read stories of those who misuse diuretics and have either died or ended up in the hospital do to the extermination of these essential minerals. So for the BB who knows the balancing act with this than that is impressive for sure. I think this would be a great sticky simply because of the multiple times that people have has this very issue affect them here +2
I think where people get confused is most pre packaged foods contain a high amount of sodium already and when people say stay away from the sodium they may be meaning Don't add any additional from the shaker would be my best guess. Most people do not eat fresh foods that needs seasoned they only eat the processed ones that's already been salted.. There is a confusion of the required amount of sodium needed for your body to properly function and when excess salt is used they become bloated and go to the extreme of cutting it all out completely. There is a fine balance of enough and to much .. Just my two cents . East fresh foods and nobody will ever have to worry about this problem
Well maybe they shouldn't be eating processed foods if they are trying to live a healthy lifestyle. And why not put extra salt from the shaker?
That is true.. Excess sodium can lead to hyper tension .. Bloating ... Extra strain on kidneys.. If your on cycle nitti this is stress that's not needed on your body . Now the bloating issue some may see that as there estrogen is to high and combat that with extra AI then crash there estrogen
