+ 1 Old school coach vs new school

ad

So I've made huge improvements by switching coaches because of diet and learning overall more things. My old coach was more old school. The one I have now is more old school. He's feeding me a lot more food instead of protein shakes with food. Matter a fact the coach I have now does even feed me protein shakes. If I need a quick source of protein he tells me to drink a carton of egg whites. My other coach would say protein shake. Also I'm coming in this year about 20lbs every when I step on stage. My old school coach would cut my carbs out completely almost vs the new school coach we are coasting into my comp with a good bit of carbs. My advice is pick food over protein supplements. Eat that shit because that's where you're going to get all your gains from. If I had him a few years ago I'd be 215 lean. Also he's a great motivator and has had 4 amateurs go pro in the last 2 years.

Whole sources of food are always better than bars and shakes!

If you had to literally live on one or the other for the rest of your life then yes its proper whole food. However after after seeing this post a few times I've got to give an honest opinion and say that I've compared the two scenarios and logged it all. One was days of lots of nutritious food and meat/chicken etc together with lots of milk and the other was half the amount of food not especially the best BUT with protein shakes and BCAA drinks and there was no comparison - I healed way better with the crappy little meals and shakes and got a lot stronger and went into each workout at 100%. On the big whole food meals with milk I was only 60% healed each time and could train and nowhere near full capacity and strength. With the quality of Whey Isolate shakes nowadays and the amount of protein you can consume each time with them together with BCAA's I'm sorry but they are so much more powerful and productive to training than people give them credit for.

I totally agree. Whole food any day of the week. Protein shakes and bars have their place, but not over real food.

Your body is your science experiment. Through trial and error you should be able to identify how certain variables have different effects on/in your body. Maybe someone has a hard time digesting red meat and accepts a powder better or vice versa. I use to slam shakes and got to a point where they bloated me and made my guts hurt(and the gas oooowww). Same thing with carbs...maybe you like oats but whole pasta makes you feel like junk. Gotta critique your diet to your specific needs and make that motor run as efficiently as you can. Your body will tell you what you need. Listen to it.

Damn old post & banned! Lol

Naturally bro I feel it's best to eat real food vs supplements. IMO there is no substitute for good quality food. But now a days sometimes we do not get enough from the meals we are eating, and therefor need to add in supplements. I am from the old school, and try to get all of my nutrients through meals as back in the day we did not have all of the supplements that are available now at our disposal. The only supplements I use is BCAA'S, Crystalized Egg Whites, and sometimes a Pre-Workout Supplement. I like the Crystalized Egg Whites as I use that for my protein shake right after the gym as it has no carbs, and no fat where most protein shakes have extra sugars, fat, and carbs. Just my .02

Good Luck bro

Anyone who recommends supplements instead of food is selling supplements

Hello Sir,

Most important thing is that you are improving your physique and you are a happy athlete. Even though I am a big fan of real food, in the end it doesn't really matter real food or protein shakes, what matters though you hit your calories with properly balanced macros, so to me this is not an indicator of a good or bad coach. If you get on the stage heavier and in the same or better condition, that is a great achievement and excellent indicator of success. And I think you are in the right track. Good luck with your training and contest prep if you consider doing one.

Regards

Food>supplements any day of the week. Whey protein is nothing like real authentic protein from meats and other natural sources. Glad you got a new coach whos helping you improve.

More like smart vs not so smart dietitians. There’s nothing “new school” about recommending supplements over food. That’s just plain old ignorance.
