+ 3 Can you keep your gains? Scientific study says steroid effects can be permananet

Found a cool article, researchers found that the hypertrophy effects of steroid exposure can be permanent (translated, you can go off and keep your gains). This study was with mice but still pretty cool to see the results.

Well go do a heavy cycle then come off and tell me if you kept your gains! The answer is no you don't keep them!

See below, the study was about the changes to muscle fibers, not maintaining mass. I should have worded the title differently.

The key part there is "mice". There's a huge difference between the physiology of mice and humans. That's why when drugs are designed they go through certain key stages and approval by authorities before moving into the next level of the food chain. Mice - primates - humans. There is no country in the world that will approve a drug for human trial purely from mice data.

Interesting post though.

The article mentions several times "brief exposure" to steroids, which leads me to believe there are limitations of maintaining gains in the long term. Otherwise, I would suspect that retiring bodybuilders would maintain a lot of their mass after their careers end even with a modicum of weight training. But they display significant atrophy upon cessation.
But interesting read nevertheless. Thanks.

I agree, the "supernatural" mass gains are not sustainable without maintaining extremely high testosterone levels. I think the focus of the study was on muscle memory and the permanent changes to the muscle fibers rather than maintaining mass. The mice that had been exposed to steroids were able to regrow muscle much more proficiently than the control group long after the steroids were metabolized.

Many have concluded that the beneficial effects of these changes were long lasting and this might impact the suspension times for professional athletes caught using PED's. If these changes are permanent, they give a long term advantage long after the use of steroids.

Yeah, that would make sense. We'll see if the sanctioning organizations consider longer suspensions.
