+ 2 Always wondered about the pros....
Ok....does anyone here actually personally know a pro bodybuilder? I'm not talking like Mr.Olympia guys who obviously have crazy money and can afford all the expensive and best gear and have doctors on demand basically. I mean just a pro who competes to make a decent living. If that makes any sense? I have always wondered did they really cycle completely OFF?
For us average joes who compete in these amateur shows locally we follow the PCT regimens (well most do lol). And take some time off to cleanse our bodies before hopping back on. But, these guys have to continuously build. I know when I cycle off it can be hard to really maintain all the gains I got and end up with maybe 8 pounds or so of what I acutally gained in new muscle. Maybe my body just does not retain what I added with AAS as well as most but it just has always made me question if maybe they just go to an TRT dosage until they load back up on a cycle. I'd love to know.

I am friends with 2 ifbb pro B.B.s who have both coached/mentored me separately on/off for years. I’ve never asked them about what they do, but they both have shared things they do with me. One shared that he comes off for 1-2 months a year like late Nov-end of Dec or late Nov-beginning of Jan.
Have some very good ifbb friends and hands down the food cost more than the gear hgh comes in second most expensive
Area-1255Yup, there are ways to cut it down a bit but when you are on a caloric surplus you'll be spending at minimum between 3-400 $, if you add in a fit wife/GF you might as well double that number, she won't be eating as much but the extra bit there is an insurance policy in case she digs into your meal stash!!!!!
ClassyChassis.
I think it’s mostly genetics like other people have said.
I have two friends that are pros and one hasn’t cycled off in over four years. The other guy cycles off because he believes it’s healthier and doesn’t come off for financial reasons.
I think AAS is actually the cheapest part of competing though.
I think AAS is actually the cheapest part of competing though.
I think you're absolutely correct, given the costs off quality food
Serious question, what ends up being more expensive for most pros in the long term, the food bill or the pharmaceutical issue HGH?
I think that depends on his source and quality of HGH... I have a connection for Parma ISSUE (not "grade") hgh that is crazy expensive, but the only reason I get it is because the guy wont use it and sells it to me... prescribed by his doctor. But the cost on it is CRAZY.
I'll go this far due to security reasons... I was VERY CLOSE friends, and trained with, a certain bodybuilder who was featured in Flex magazine in the 90's. He died of a heart attack a few months ago---total shock to me. I'm still amazed he wasn't more in touch with where he was health-wise. I will also say, when it came to AAS use, he was NOT very knowledgeable, and would consult with me often. He did however, have great genetics and even in his mid-fifties looked fantastic.
GENETICS TRUMP EVERYTHING!!! If you don't have the pedigree, you can forget stepping on an IFBB stage------EVER. You can take gear by the barrel full and eat a cow every day... doesn't matter. But the magazines (ie supplement companies) don't want you to know that... they depend on selling you the dream to keep the cash rolling in. Joe Weider was a fucking maggot fraud. .. ...Hey kids, don't take dangerous steroids... use these supplements they MY champions use and you can be just like them
LOL.... yeah, ok Joe.
basskiller89I love when they throw "bol" in the product name lol
LOL... all the fake ass test boosters at GNC... locked in the glass cabinet with crazy price tags.
Lol
I’ll agree with that. I do beleive though that even a guy with poor genes can build a great looking body. Bodybuilding to me is looking great and feeling good about myself on vacation. I think today’s pros look like shit honestly. All the pictures on my gym wall are guys from the 60s and 70s.
I think today’s pros look like shit honestly.
I couldn't agree more... I think Preist and Levrone were examples of the last of the really great looking pros. Guys like Branch Warren, and Cutler are just too smooth and bulky for me...... no quality anymore.
Heck yeah bro the new guys are just cattle looking I have old mags my father gave me and they look so much better. The new guys just try to make a pissing contest kinda like how women get ass implants they look weird and not right nothing like my wife's ass and legs even when she's a little over weight
I agree, i don’t want none unless you got buns hun.

I used to know a guy pretty good that was poised to do huge things in the 90s . Last I heard he’s in prison. He didn’t cycle year round. The last time I saw him he hasn’t trained in a year. Honestly other than haveing a belly he didn’t look much different than when he was training.
RustyhookerMy buddy was on the olympia stage. He didnt make crazy rich money. I dont see bodybuilders as a get rich lifestyle at all.
Back when the olympia guys openly posted a precontest cycle, they'd have 12k invested in just gear. Fifth place was 12k. Add in food and living costs. Basically look at your income then buy 12k in gear for 20 week prep. Now go pay your rent and food. Food alone for me is a ton and im just a regular midget.
Its crazy to me how these big pro make less money than these young youtubers talking the talk and they dont even compete
RustyhookerMany of the youtubers are just that.....talkers. 5 mins of fame. Crazy world...
Lol I like the Athlean guy. Built like a 15 year old and every other exercise is to dangerous. PT was right. There’s a sucker born every minute...
I’m jealous of his biceps genetics, I’ll give him that. He’s hit and miss. Mostly miss. This was the last video of his I checked out before I finally got too fed up with the awful advice to continue
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T3N-TO4reLQ
Has to be the worst information I’ve ever seen put out about rowing
RustyhookerHe looks like joe crossfit. But again the skinny beanpole look is in fashion. Biceps cool! But its like dude did only arms and starved. No real mass.
This is more the type id listen to. Midget powered
https://youtu.be/CR86_TByU18
That guy (no pun intended) is a behemoth.
It’s good to look up to the guys with similar dimensions as your own. I’m my case, I’m limited to taller, trap dominant, bald-headed, hairy-chested dudes like
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=84J0tuy8vdo
RustyhookerGoldberg is awesome!! Massively solid. I watched a short documentary on him and it showed his football background. Dude was savage!! Saw him live too at wrestling event. Impressive!! Definitely not slow moving for being so large.
If he were to lose his vascularity and add just a bit of fat (which would negate his vascularity lol), he'd pass for a guy who has never worked out... no real size there at all lol. He's not a guy I'm a fan of.
He’s incredibly detailed and looks like a human anatomy chart. I can’t take that away from him, even if that’s personally not a look I would want. Obviously I’m nowhere near his BF%, but at least I can fill out a t shirt. I see why he's shirtless for most of his vids. With a shirt on, besides the arms he looks almost DYEL. I think that’s honestly just too lean; there is such a thing imo.
When I lose 5 pounds of body fat, I look like I've gained 20 pounds of muscle..lol
RustyhookerThe joy of our height. Add 5lbs bodyfat...and its the stocky wrestler look.
Youtube has made this lifestyle and sport a joke. It has brought in so many unintelligent people saturating the internet with misinformation. I feel bad for the youngsters growing up now as I bet most of them get their info from those videos instead of forums like this. I would bet median age for a forum like this is close to 30 or older. All I had was forums when I was growing up. Sure there is a lot of misinformation on forums as well but Jesus....youtube is ridiculous. There was a video going around about a 16 year old showing how to inject steroids and what he was taking. COME ON....where are the parents
Lol! Every video I see of his the captions say don’t do this exercise!
Wtf? If I follow his advice I couldn’t even walk because it’s “dangerous!”
Food costs have gotten rediculous in the last few years. As soon as crude oil hits a big gain we are really gonna be screwed.
RustyhookerI hear that!! Thats why i eat so much chicken. 5 bucks a pound for cheap beef or 3 pounds breasts for 6 bucks
Thats true. I don't exactly pay much attention when im buying. As I like to buy every few days because I hate freezing meat. I try to buy as fresh as possible. But, there is a chain here called Meijer (not sure where everyone is located but it is like an upscale wal mart lol. If you can even say upscale) But the app tracks your purchases. And I spent over $1100 dollars just in food! Its sickening. Forget about buying organic. Cod at meijee is 7.99 a pound (4.99 on sale). And I go through roughly 15 pounds a week just in that. At Whole Foods....I think I saw last I went there it was up to 21.99? I may have even seen it as "low" as 17.99.
Genetics, G4P, sponsorships, endorsements and a blatant disregard for their health is how the PROS make it and continue to grow into the monsters that they are.
Recently the sport lost a lad who was tested in an autopsy and he had the eqivelant test dosage of 7-10gs of test in his system. For every Arnold or Zane there sadly is 20 Dallas'.
You said it right here. Each and every one of those points is correct.
This is a double edged sword. One could even argue that having elite genetics can put you at a disadvantage. What? Yeah. Imagine a natural who starts training and blows up very quickly, almost looks like he juices after a year of training even though he has no idea what he’s doing. Imagine never learning how to lift weights properly and perform technical barbell movements correctly because… well, you never had to. You responded to anything and everything, so there was never any need to worry about that thing called “form.” Jeremy Buendia tore his pec tendon off the bone just recently benching like a noob, touching high on the chest and bouncing the weight. Someone with average genetics is more likely to realize that benching that way isn’t safe or optimal and correct it. Look at Calum Von Moger and his little 405 barbell curl stunt. His arm may never be the same after a grade III tear that never should have happened. Being genetically gifted robs many athletes of their humility, leading them to believe they’re invincible. Not quite.
Does anyone realize how long G4P has gone hand in hand with hardcore bodybuilding? Ever since Joe Weider revolutionized bodybuilding, muscle fetishists like Weider himself have been paying good money for good times with bodybuilders. A lot of what goes around is hearsay with no names attached to it. Understandable, but still to be taken with a grain of salt. There’s unsubstantiated gossip like a famous BBer living with a wealthy man for a very handsome paycheck, there’s straight up videos that surface of gay porn BBers have participated in (I won’t name names). I don’t think anyone’s surprised at how many bodybuilders do cam shows and muscle worship for easy money. Muscle Metrix made a striking video about this subject recently.
Only upper level bodybuilders are fully funded. Like, money money. Most only get supplement allowances from companies for free. Most sponsored bodybuilders know perfectly well that most supps are bogus and in turn sell the products to kids at the gym for a reduced price, taking the money as their compensation, presumably to buy stuff that actually works (AAS). I doubt anyone here is naive enough to believe pros actually use the supplements they pimp in the magazines.
Unfortunately, this is practically a requirement for modern pro bodybuilding. Look at the proportions that are considered the norm these days. We’re not just talking steroid abuse, but a whole host of taboo compounds along with site enhancements that carry their own risks.
I highly recommend you all watch this brief clip of a 1990 Reg Park interview.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6tkOCsZysLM
The man is so health conscious he even recommends against OTC supplements except under the guidance of a medical doctor. Attitudes have changed, and the days of pros like Reg Park appear to be long over.
Good post brother!
There's a couple videos on YT with a doctor going over the autopsy reports of Piana and Dallas... Very eye-opening.
BB has evolved into a freak show and that's WHY there are You Tube guys who have never won a title in ANYTHING who are more popular than most bodybuilders.
I swear I put “1, 2, 3, 4.” No idea why all the bullet points say “1.” Weird.
Palumbo is in denial the most. He’s convinced that McCarver’s death had nothing to do with steroids. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t heard it come out of his mouth myself.
And quite honestly, it’s hard to blame the youtubers. With ad revenue, being a full time youtuber with a decent number of subscribers pays handsomely. It’s just a shame there’s so much awful and outright dangerous advice out there, particularly regarding training and nutrition.
OMG the car guys with Lambos also get crazy amounts of views lol
Seems like at some point things will get saturated and then ad revenue may begin to fall for all but the biggest players in the game. Social media has changed the fitness industry in a profound way to say the least.
basskiller89G4P lol ..
Like to admit it or not unfortunately it's a big part of bodybuilding.
