College basketball

ad

I have been a Kentucky Wildcat fan my whole life. As a kid, I can remember feeling physically sick when they would lose games. I was a 90s kid and the 96-98 teams were just as unbelievably good as it gets…

Times have changed.

This last season I couldn’t even watch an entire game. Part is because we aren’t good. Part is because we don’t have an elite coach. But mostly, we had a group of kids that got paid 25 million dollars (most in all of college basketball) who look like they don’t even want to be there.

Money has ruined it for me I think.

I’m not against kids making some money. I know being broke in college is tough. But there is something about a kid making MILLIONS and not giving it their all that I can no longer root for. I feel like if you’re paid, now it’s your job to perform. If you’re paid top dollar and can’t perform, then I would rather you be fired and replaced.

Maybe I’m now the angry old man I never thought I would become, but I can’t be the only one who feels this way. Are their others who feel college sports just kind of sucks now and losing interest by the day???

I too feel the pain of the players no longer having loyalty to the program for 2-3+ years. It is essentially free agency every year now. HOWEVER your view might be a little skewed from your team’s recent suckage.

I would argue that college sports are more entertaining and more competitive across the board than ever. Now it’s not only the SEC and big name schools that can pay players under the table. Everyone can pay players so the traditionally non competitive teams are getting more talent. I mean, who had Indiana winning the CFB Championship on their radar 2+ years ago?

Trust me, if players aren’t performing they are getting fired. I’m an SEC school alum and my team made it deep in the dance. After the tourney the whole team either graduated, declared, or “transferred”. Most of the transfers were likely told they didn’t have a spot the next year. Some got paydays elsewhere, but not to the level they would’ve here.

Now CFB Playoffs ruining Bowl Season and Conference Championship games is my biggest old-man gripe I currently hold…

I’m conflicted… I feel the same way you do. Once money is involved, loyalty is out the window. Making money becomes more important than team chemistry, hard work, and the trying to win a title goes out the window.

With that said, colleges and NCAA as a whole has been using these student athletes for years .they promise these kids a huge future when in reality less than 1% of them will make it at the national level. How many of these kids get garbage degrees then become jobless after graduation? When university coachs are the highest paid employee at the college, we have a major problem. For this argument, these kids should get something for putting their bodies on the line for our entertainment.
