Why do so many random old threads get placed in the "latest comments/hot topics" listings on the front page?

I've noticed this happening kind of often over the last few months. I'll see some interesting thread title in the latest comments/hot topics thread list and then discover that the last post was over a decade ago. It's obviously not recent or a popular topic. The most recent one today was titled "Test only cycles" and it's 13 years old.

So how does this sort of thing keep happening?

I have to upload pics from my phone using the Opera browser for it to work. After the 2nd time of typing up a review then going to post a pic only to have to redo it all on my phone i learned my lesson.

@Black90tsi, most content has a "hotness" meter that decays over time. Likes, comments, replies and views all contribute.
Old inactive posts that seem randomly bumped up on the frontpage are 99% unregistered visitors reading up on the topic.
View counts on eroids don't include views by unregistered users, but they still contribute to the "hotness meter"

I never realised that recent views also contribute!

You will often get it because a new member to the website will of been using the search function on a particular topic, or will be browsing through forums listed in say the Newbie section and will comment on the page. They will often respond to the member posting thinking they are still on here, but have often left or become inactive if its an old post.

1) Someone bumped the page, made a post or remark even on page 36.
2) The page was moved to a different forum. E.g., from general topics to off topic.

Does a thumbs up/down on the page count as a bump? That one i mentioned by name had no new posts which is why i was curious.

I’ve noticed that too with no comments so I figured it was probably getting trigger by new views

That probably solves it then. Thanks

I believe that page gets updated by activity- I’m not 100% sure how the point system works, but stuff that has gotten bumped was always liked/viewed/commented on recently I’ve noticed.

Maybe @Greg could elaborate

People comment or thumbs up them. Some are excellent for newbs to review
