+ 4 How Many Protein Shakes Do you have per day?

ad

Since the amount of protein we can digest in one sitting debate has reared its head again, I thought it would be interesting to see how many shakes everyone has on a typical day. This is assuming 40 grams per shake, so if you consume 80 grams of shakes over the day then vote for 2, or if you do not use them and prefer food only then click Zero.

Performance wise I don't think you will see a difference mate, if you can buy cheap and not get side effects then thats what I would do.

I’d say digestion would be the only benefit or it would be interesting if someone with a wearable glucose monitor could measure a difference in there insulin/blood sugar spiking between the two types but I doubt it. I think you’d have to do a blood tests at the exact same time after drinking either one and even if there was a difference in the numbers who knows what real world effect that’s even having on recovery. But I have super fucked up digestion over the last few months and cheap ass protein doesn’t bother my stomach at all. I’ve never been crazy about digestion stuff until I started having my own issues but protein still has never really been an issue for me, not even protein farts really

As far as I know you do get quite a big natural insulin spike after consuming a Whey Isolate shake, I think it will be greater than with concentrate as it digests a LOT quicker, so that is definately going to be beneficial. It would be really interesting if someone tested this with a blood glucose meter afterwards with both types of protein and reported the results. Take a reading every 15 minutes or however you do it! Good After drinking 40g's I always feel my blood sugar drop a lot even putting Dextrose powder in it.

I've voted as zero. Personally, I prefer real food over something processed. I used to drink them regularly but have become lactose intolerant over the years. On a very rare occasion, I'll have one post workout only to get something in me fast when my stomach isn't feeling a meal at the moment. If I do, it's generally something isopure at like 50g per. I will still eat a complete meal within the hour though, as I feel real food is the answer.
Another good one Press!!!

Cheers Chim!! So you still get bloating after Isopure? Is that a 90% protein content shake or 97%? 97% powder you defo will not feel any bloating buddy, with 90% sometimes I can still feel it. Hydrolysate is much better than Isolate as it is even more filtered of fat. It uses water filtration which is why it can be a little bitter but often the flavouring takes that out.

CHIMAIRA75's picture

I don't necessarily bloat, but it def acts as a mild laxative still lol. Unless I'm post workout, I don't bother with them. I still hit my macro goals with ease with food. Only reason I even go post workout with it, is because immediately following I'm usually still too amped up to eat yet. Again though, I still follow with a full meal within the hour. It's kinda just a hold over snack till the stomach is up for the challenge.

I have 2 scoops mixed blend protein first thing
2 scoops whey after workout
2 scoops casein before bed.
Other stuff mixed into these as well dependent on the time of the day.
Buy from My protein, the protein works or bulk powders (whoever’s got a deal on) uk

I use to be a big fan of the Isolate 97 from Bulk, then got sick of having to flavour it all the time so now I use the Clear Whey from My protein, normally Cloudy Lemonade or Tropical Flavour Smile

Gsxr1000spanker's picture

I’ve got some of that clear whey too. Use it if I have a sauna after a workout. Goes down better in the heat than normal whey. Nice tasting stuff and it’s almost always on some sort of offer

2 a day but I use liquid egg whites and low fat chocolate milk 1 as soon as I get up and when after training, cost of these powders today is crazy for what they are. I did use the optimum nutrition on gold standard a few years ago but it’s was around £35 for a 2.5kg tub then

Mate thats actually pretty cheap!! Even Dextrose powder is expensive now - it really pisses me off. Use to pay £18 for 10kg's and now its the same price for 5kg's. Instead of the supplements market thinking okay everyone is buying this stuff now so we can afford to keep it cheap - they see it as an opportunity to be greedy and increase it all.

DavosD's picture

Atm zero, they just bloat me too damn much and they make my psoriasis worse for some reason. Shit also got waay too expensive in the last years, its just not worth it anymore.

press1's picture

Have you tried the Clear Whey variety as they contain Whey Hydrolysate which shouldn't bloat you with it being fat free? Or whey isolate

DavosD's picture

I haven't. I always used isolate back in the days. But again a 2 pound jar of gold standard whey iso sets me back over 50 bucks.

press1's picture

I still think having a fast acting shake after training is much better than eating food for results, you can get 40 grams of protein in and be hungry within half an hour again. Overall I think you will get in much more nutrition than just food alone. If you are happy with your results though I guess there is no need to change routine. For 1kg of Clear Flavoured Whey I pay £35 which is about $45.

DavosD's picture

Lol you got me convinced, you repping for gold standard whey or what? Lol, gonna run to the store and get a tub right away.

J/k but I'm gonna try iso or hydro again when my psoriarisis clears up. Shit is stress related, gotta lower my stress levels lmao.

press1's picture

LMAO I use to use a lot of Gold Standard before I moved to Reflex, then when My Protein and Bulk Powders hit the scene with proteins that were half the price I moved to them. They were both sooo cheap back then, now they are the same price as ON and the rest of them. Ya beat stress mate by training!! And selling your kids if you haven them Lmao

DavosD's picture

Yeahh same my protein was the shit, those 5kg bags where dirt cheap and tasty AF. Back in the days..

Im ordering the clear protein stuff right now

press1's picture

Which are you going for bud - my favourite over in the US was Apple Flavour Isopure!! It had just come out then, for about 10 years we couldn't get fruit flavoured protein over here.

LondonGeordie's picture

Myprotein had a mental offer the other day for an hour 5kg bag of whey for £50! I already have 4k bag of whey but had to stock up a bit more after that --

You have to keep your eye out on email for those little Flash deals popping up don't ya - I like the ones where its £2 for a 2.5kg bag of Dextrose powder!!! Bought 8 of the buggers last time and you should have seen how pissed off the postman was having to deliver it!!! LMAO

LondonGeordie's picture

Yeah defo mate, they constantly have deals on all the time. Sometimes I’ll grab a deal and grab a few bits then a better deal comes up few days later then I’m like fuck sake could of saved a few more quid lol

One thing that really pisses me off is how they still charge for delivery each time, unlike Bulk where you pay £10 for unlimited next day delivery for the year!!! I save tonnes doing it that way. Plus MyP have just increased their postage charges too - you just know they are making extra money out of that also the cheeky bastards!!

I used to use reflex weight gainer years ago. Found out they are a Brighton company where I used to live. Decent powders
