+ 6 Old School vs. Bodybuilders look today

ad

I was just chatting with a member on an SI and we happen to bring up ole school bodybuilders vs new school bodybuilders. Personally I grew up looking at 90's bodybuilders. I had all the magazines, however my brothers I love that 70's era, so my preference is the way those guys looked. I try and imitate that look.

My favorite ole school look is from "The Myth" Sergio Olivia. I liked Arnold's look too. Both guys started as powerlifters.

My question to y'all is what look did you guys like....Arnold, Sergio, Frank Zane look or Ronnie Coleman, Dorian look? Or maybe one on the new school guys like Nick Walker?

UncleYoked's picture

I grew up looking up to Arny like most of us but Frank Zane and Jack Lelane were guys I really idolized

I liked 2018 SHAWN RHODEN maybe the best physique in history

DeeMan's picture

Yea he looked damn good. RIP Shawn.

Very underrated in my opinion. He should of won that 1980 Mr. Olympia

Nattyboomba's picture

You know who I like that doesn’t get much love - Kai Greene. He obviously doesn’t compete anymore, but I’m surprised he never placed better than he did when he was competing.

DeeMan's picture

Best poser of ALL TIME. Looked good too when gut was on point

Lucci's picture

He would look good if it wasn't for his GH gut

Nattyboomba's picture

Yep. Hard to argue with that. His legs and his lats - serious. But he was showing a bit of palumboism

DeeMan's picture

True

Lucci's picture

I know I may get blasted for saying this, but I hated Ronnie's physique. I just did not like it at all. I mean I did like his build early on in his career, but towards the end he just looked like he had slabs of beef hanging off of him. I liked Jay's physique, but he was a bit blocky. If his waist was a little smaller and he had more of a taper I think he would have been lights out. I am a big fan of Kevin Levrone and yes the fact that he could downsize and then bounce right back was amazing. I also was a big fan of Chris Cormier.

DeeMan's picture

Yeah some didn't like the way Colman looked. The look that I liked on him was his first Olympia win look and that other look when he came out posing with a crown on at the 2003 Olympia I think. No one had that size and condition ever.

Drexyl's picture

There’s just so many,

Levrone
Haney
Wheeler
Zane
Kawak
I think a lot of it is when you really started getting into it. Late 80’s for me. I’ll take the physiques from 1988-1995 or so over anything. Just way too many names to list.

Edit- Strydom, Gary fucking Strydom.

DeeMan's picture

Sooo many. For some reason I wasn't feeling Lee Haney. Gary Strydom was a beast though. Out of all the bodybuilders, it was reported that both Dorian Yates and Ronnie Coleman said Flex Wheeler had the best genetics ever.

Watch it twice lol
A lot of people don’t know this, but I met Lee Haney, he said Drex, when I won my 8th Olympia I was 76 years old. Lee Haney always lied about his age

DeeMan's picture

yeah that's what I heard. I've said it on here a long time ago but I saw Ronnie on a regular basis. Lol won't get into details.

Drexyl's picture

Bro, definitely. Taper, development, conditioning, Wheeler was insane. It’s a shame how everything went for him, but we all get dealt different cards.

DeeMan's picture

Flex just lacked the work ethic according to Ronnie Coleman

alekaras's picture

From 70s serge nubret guy was insane!!

Drexyl's picture

I haven’t been able to find it again, it was a video of a barely known bodybuilder that spent a little time around Nubret. He went to visit him after getting friendly and of course the conversation went to drugs. I’ll see if I can find it again on YouTube, you’d be surprised at what he was and wasn’t taking. I don’t want to get into many details, it gives people very bad ideas, but I’ll just say he had a very resilient thyroid.

DeeMan's picture

Yessir..." The Black Panther"..he had a chest that rivaled Arnold's

alekaras's picture

And between the two I'll picked him he got the full package, crazy v tape, striated legs, sick abs..

Makwa's picture

I don't like looking at today's Bubbleguts that are so prevalent now.

JEX30Sex's picture

Definitely prefer the old school look over all the "mass monsters" of recent. Don't get me wrong it's damn impressive but for me the former is more aesthetically pleasing and the ladies seem to prefer that sort of look over the latter as well. My .02

Danny padila, aoron baker, Mohammed benaziza, giant killers!

DeeMan's picture

RIP Mohammed Benaziza.

alekaras's picture

Yes sir, and imagine he kicked Dorians ass weighting 50 + pounds less!!

Bill1976's picture

Lou ferrigno

DeeMan's picture

Yep one of the first mass monsters

Bill1976's picture

He should have won the last year. He was more ripped. Looked perfect

DeeMan's picture

I agree. Big difference between 40 yr old Lou and the 25 yr old Lou in Pumping Iron movie. He hit his prime at 40

alekaras's picture

Yep a true monster, he made everyone look small!!

DeeMan's picture

That was a big ole dude especially when he came out of retirement at 40 for the Olympia. First true mass monster along with Victor Richards.

alekaras's picture

Indeed I watch a video Victor Richard's posing next to Dorian, and Dorian was like wtf is this, huge guy, with insane genetics as well!!

DeeMan's picture

Yea that was insane. He clearly was bigger than Dorian but Dorian was better conditioned

JakeKO's picture

Hell yeah!

hogwild's picture

Hell yeah!

Da Hulk....don't make me angry..you wouldn't like me!..that was my favorite show as a kid.
Legendary status!

DeeMan's picture

Yessir!

alekaras's picture

Take a look at this giant killer!!

Bill1976's picture

Can’t seem to post a pic of him

P1nh3d's picture

I think Lou coming back to compete at the Olympia in '92 was the first real mass monster. Internet rumors have him at almost 330 on stage. There's photos of him next to Dorian which are a trip.

alekaras's picture

Yep Dorian next to him look like a child lol

DeeMan's picture

Yep he was a mass monster before Dorian was so not sure why Dorian gets that label. Lou was 40 something and at his peak physically.

wanted's picture

I guess im willing to be average like chris bumstead

alekaras's picture

Yeah average lol

Zee's picture

In my opinion I wouldn't call Bumstead average. He is getting more popular than the "mass monster" and more younger folks want to look like him. He's still in his early days with continuous progression.
Plus with Hany and Choopan they make the perfect team.

DeeMan's picture

Just a good classical physique that I dig bro!
