+ 2 Does anyone take Collagen Powder for joints/tendons?

ad

Really interested to hear anyone's experiences or opinions on this, does anyone use Collagen Protein or Capsules/powder to help with joints & tendons, connective tissue etc?

How have you found it to be such as helping to get rid of pain or stiffness, cracking etc - Specifically things like shoulders from heavy lifting. It is supposed to be highly beneficial for brittle nails and hair also, almost like HGH I guess.

collagen and distilled water are amazing imo.

My Holy god!! Lol

I know its not relevant to this post but had to put this up - I guess he's always been pretty strong then Lmao

I was reading a great article earlier again on Collagen - Apparently for each year after 40 you lose 1% of it in your body in terms of natural production from the amino's you take in such as Glycine etc. By 80 you will have lost roughly 75% - this is why your joints, skin and hair become so haggared after this age rapidly.

This unflavoured version I have bought is so damn cheap and barely affects the flavour/consistency at all of the shake you are already drinking. Its also an extra 20g of protein that isn't even noticeable in terms of fullness or bloating.

I’ve used it.. I did not see a difference IMO... I sound like bubble wrap popping when I stand up and start to walk... my joint are screwed from years and years of Heavy lifting.. I go get shots about every 3 months to help with the pain

Mine just tend to start cracking on the 2nd day of healing - I guess as the tendons and joints are stiffening before they fully heal up. Even if it speeds up recovery by just a day and more so in the long term then I'll keep buying it. Hopefully in the next few weeks I may see a difference Smile

I use the beef collagen powder in my protein drink post workout. 15 grams added to my whey isolate/hydrolyzed isolate. It dose not change the flavor at all. I put 10 grams in my morning amino acid drink as well. It changes the texture slightly. I’ve also tried it straight in water as it’s supposed to be flavorless. It makes me not like the water but that’s about it.

I also drink chicken bone broth in the winter time in the evening, which is about 10 grams of chicken collagen. I’ve also tried the flavored collagen water RTDs they are a little pricey. I’d just stick with the bulk powder and add it to something, but I never take mine with solid food even though manufacturers recommend putting it in yogurt and the such, but I feel it hinders absorption.

I think it helps, the research supports it. My shoulders feel better than they have in some time, but it is far from the only thing I’m using for joint support.

Do you take Glucosamine & Chondroitin mate?

maddogg's picture

Yes I do. I triple up the Glucosamine to at least 4500 mg a day. I try to keep the chondroitin down around the 1200 to 1500 level as some people say it is bad for your circulatory system. I also take a combo with Glucosamine and MSM as well as hyaluronic Acid which while it is used for joints it is also good for your skin like collagen.

I got all my bottles in front of me so on a typical work day I would have 750 mg glucosamine and MSM tablet from a warehouse club(inexpensive) in the am with 200mg hyaluronic acid. Then at lunch I will have a product that is in capsule form, which many find to have better results with, a little more expensive, with 1500 mg Glucosamine 350 chondroitin Sulfate wth ASU blend plus another warehouse club tablet 750/750. Then when I get home I’ll have a liquid product with 2000 mg Glucosamine 1200mg chondroitin and 500 MSM. Some people take up to 6 grams Glucosamine. I think Makwa’s recommendation Was up to that much.

So there I have 5 grams of glucosamine 1550 mg of Chondroitin and 2000 mg MSM

The Hydraulic Acid is some crazy stuff. I have it in bulk powder so I get it on my hands every time I use it. I bonds with a tremendous amount of water. If I get my hands wet afterwards they become incredibly slick. I’ve gone to rinse glasses out with the powder on my hand and the glasses slipped right out and broke on me twice. I make sure I wash my hands before I handle glasses now. Try it some time to see how slick it is, but also use it for your joints.

So I guess the big question bud is which would you go for if it was one or the other - Glucosamine caplets or Collagen powder? Or much better to do both? What I am wanting to heal quicker is that cracking shoulder pain you get from heavy lifting on the front delt in flat bench. I can heal the pec and delt in 2 days but the tendon cracking and soreness sometimes can still be there on day 4, especially if heavy deads have been involved which pull down on the rotator cuff also.

Which would you recommend my man?! :))

maddogg's picture

If I had to choose just one it would be the Glucosamine. But I would use both if I were you, because how hard you’re pushing you joints and tendons with powerlifting. If it were just the tendon I were treating I’d use the Collagen. Glucosamine is very inexpensive, I would recommend it to almost anyone for joint preservation.

I'm starting to develop this shell like structure on my back and hoves where I once had balls - could I be overdoing the dose dog?

maddogg's picture

Lol, maybe! But if you can still train hard then it’s all worth it! lmao

Glucosamine & Collagen arrived today :-) Surprisingly the collagen powder didn't smell like mashed up bones & bums LOL I figure as I have never taken anything before at least taking these will help in some way - The Glucosamine caplets also have MSM powder in there too.

maddogg's picture

Lol, you know what mashed up bones of bums smells like. Cool I hope it works for you. I feel like your a good healer form some of the things you’ve talked about. Like your groin and creatinine helping your shoulders and being able to train each muscle group twice a week. MSM is a good inexpensive addition to Glucosamine. I read your link about Collagen. Didn’t know they thought it made people noticeably stronger. Now I might have to increase my dose:)

Good luck with the progress and enjoy your Labor Day weekend if you have that over there. I’m going to train all 3 days with cardio at least twice in the morning.

Mate I've stabbed enough bottoms in my time to recognise that distinct smell Lol Ya know what bud I'm seriously debating trying this conjugate method now - I'm use to trying to go heavy all the time and thats what I get the most enjoyment out of but I've reached the stage I think where trying to do that twice a week for each big muscle group is too much. Main thing I notice getting smashed is my CNS and once thats shot you just cannot progress on anything until its healed - and you feel like shit in the meantime. I'm starting to see the reasoning behind 1 Heavy day and 1 speed day now. I find the speed days a bit boring and kinda feel like I've only done half a session afterwards but if its whats required now I'll just have to stick to it.

Thing is bud think about it - a lot of heavy max effort lifting is down to joint & tendon strength rather than muscle strength. If those joints are weak or often stiff and unhealed then you just cannot lift big. The fact they are talking about it on Elite FTS proves the point entirely. Taking deca and wet orals is all well and good but they aren't really healing anything are they pal.

My wife has used it. She mainly tried it to help with her brittle nails. She did not see much of a difference and stopped using it. I am curious about it helping joints.

I am looking into that. I am allergic to shell fish. So I can't take the chondroitin/ glucosamine. Makes me itch like crazy and get whelps . I need something because I'm starting to sound like rocks banging around in a bucket

press1's picture

One thing for sure is its something that definitely declines as we get older - Hence why our joints, hair, skin go crap and look old Lol Its mainly made by our bodies from Glycine which I never knew, if you take more of that in it helps apparently as well as the glycogen loading effects of it.

Bill G's picture

I just went and picked up a can of collagen.
Its called "rule 1"
R1 collagen
Hydrolyzed collagen peptides

Carries 10 grams per scoop/dose
50 servings for 42 bucks.
Going to give it a try. The words are it will be noticeable in a week.
It is from bovine hide so im hoping it doesn't trigger any allergies.

Bill G's picture

I just tried it by its self in a bottle of water. Not bad . It taste like hair. I cant describe it. Immediately got a sticky thing going on in my mouth. No homo? But it is weird. I'm betting it would make a great jello.

press1's picture

So did you keep it up dude? Tell me some good news that it helped Smile Lol

Bill G's picture

Day three sofar so good. Still a little early. I am not having a chellfish reaction so that is a plus

Bill G's picture

just under that one is a study saying it was just as effective as the placebo. I personally know it works. Have to take it or a while. A couple weeks. I just can't take it any more because of the allergy

Bill G's picture

I found this one
https://5minutereviews.com/lp/best-collagen-powder/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIq_...

It has fish it says. Not sure if it is shell fish or just fish. 20 bucks may be worth a test to see if it makes me itch.

press1's picture

Oh it definitely seems to work bud, just been reading all sorts of articles on it. I'm just wondering is it palatable enough to bang in a protein shake considering what it is LMAO and have people really noticed the difference. Its either this or Glucosamine & Chondroitin tabs but I work better with powders that can just be added to things.

Hey mate - Same as steroids. Stop taking them and return to being human again.

press1's picture

I'll probably just get it from Myprotein where I get my other supps from - They do Collagen Protein, capsules, powder etc. It sounds like theirs is made from Pork which I assume means the skin, arse, hairs, balls Lmao

maddogg's picture

It will have a different amino profile from beef and even chicken collagen. I think beef is supposed to be best for human use. Those are the two types I’ve tried. I do like Myprotein’s Clear Whey Isolate intra workout, but I’m not total sold on their quality. I got a kilo of there BCAA powder dirt cheep and it turns out it’s about only 2/3 bcaa. 133 servings 5 grams BCAA per serving unflavored.

Damn I never thought of it like that LMAO Well they taste pretty good, although Hotdawg and protein shake flavour doesn't sound too great together. Could go Bovine style which is Cow - Fancy an udder?
