+ 1 Powerlifting On Vs. Off Steroids
Those of you into Powerlifting and in particular Deadlifting - will of no doubt come across Pete Rubish at some point...
He was renown for his monster Deadlifting in his parents basement in front of the washing machines!!! Lol
It was clear at one point he was well into his gear with his physique look and what he could lift - he was also a regular in the Animal lifting cage at events held around the world.
Mainly due to health reasons he stopped using Steroids and went completely natural, not even resorting to TRT.
Here is a video of his most recent Push/Pull meet showing the difference in his lifts between natural and on cycle in both the Bench press and Deadlift. Also note his dramatically different look in physique - most notably traps & neck, legs and even his face!!!

For Reference:
Bench on cycle: 210Kg
Bench off cycle: 172.5kg
Deadlift on cycle: 392.5kg
Deadlift off cycle: 272.5kg

Ped's are not magic, they enhance your performance in most cases. We really do not know what he is on or off, and what his real life situation is. We do know he has a passion for lifting and it has been a part of his life. I am sure there are studies that show as long as your mental motivation outlook on life is positive and going off cycle is not the end of the world, good things can still happen. Assuming his numbers were slightly off benching and deadlifting that is really not bad. We do not know if he has other things going on in his life and it was said here that he is doing this because of health reasons. This tells me all things being equal whatever he was taking was harming him, or whatever health issue he had the ped's were harming his health. He is still doing the same thing with weights but not Ped's. Assuming this is true it seems the only difference. So i want to believe that not only going off Roids totally, but no TRT, you can still kick Arse!!!
Even his skin looks different. As shitty as it is for him he’s making the best move he can. If there’s a health reason and he’s actually following medical guidance, there’s no reason to be ashamed of that. Most guys would just say fuck it and ride the AAS train to death. He’s still a strong mf’er
As for the trt, I’m assuming he’s trying to regain his natural levels if possible. If he’s been trying for a year that’s the only thing I can think of.
Yeah its definitely commendable of him - I have seen a video of him pull 300kg not so long ago but I guess because this was after bench maybe he didn't have it left in him. Must be heart breaking still though, there's a vid of him on tren etc and he's pulling something like 380kg for 3 then doing a back off set of 300kg for 6, and now 300kg for a single is his max lift. Must be a real headf**k - Not quite sure if he was given a warning by his doctor or what but I think he had a scare and also a bad back injury when he was at his peak. Funny how these guys come and go so quickly - Several years back it was all about Dan Green, Dr Deadlift and Pete Rubish and now its the guys pushing mid four hundreds who every one talks of.
There’s a guy at my gym who kinda said something about powerlifting and getting weaker than when you’re at your peak. He said he went in knowing the longevity isn’t a super common thing in this sport and knowing that you’ll only be peaked for a short amount of time is something he used.
He equated it to almost just seeing how strong you can get once before going back down. It’s just how long you can maintain it before dropping back.
Absolutely mate, thing is you are always ultimately pushing for a maximum in any lift and its the tendons that will always suffer the most. First 5 years I had no problems at all, but beyond that and now little issues with rotator cuffs and muscle that if not left to heal turn into tears etc. Funny thing is also is that you long for the day when you get a new PR and think the world will be a better place LMAO But in reality I find I am stressed to death as you know you are such limited time to keep bettering it even by just a few kg's before something inevitably goes wrong such as you miss a few attempts so you lose the lift momentum and progression, you get injured, your sleep gets affected, you become ill, outside work factors etc. Although these sound like excuses you can only better your previous attempts if you have absolutely everything in perfect sync with each other such as appetite, sleep, good gear, perfect health and the moment one of them becomes sub par its game over Lol. Its completely true that the human body ultimately does not want to carry any extra muscle mass that it doesn't have to. Plus there is the added factor of aging - look at any of these top guys lifting insane numbers and all of them will be around mid twenties up to 30. Sure you can fight the aging process with gear but you still ultimately utilise it better when you are younger and recovery between sessions is so much better. I always use to wonder why the hell guys would switch from Powerlifting over to Bodybuilding after 5 to 10 years and now I see exactly why due to problems with lifting progression, injuries over the years, burnout, the need to run huge amounts of gear to progress further, the desire to get bigger and look better rather than looking small in comparison to your lifts etc.
