What is the most important gear if you could only pic one for your gym

What one piece of equipment would you take over all others? And when I say one I speaking of say dumbbells, barbell/plates etc.

I’ll take the bar with a set of weights. I have done dumbbell exercises with plates before. (Ya gotta do the best you can with what you got)

Regardless of my previous flippant reply - I would choose dumbbells any time. They allow you to do virtually all forms of exercise including incline and flat bench presses, shoulder presses, upright rows, bent over rows, flyes, bicep curls, tricep curls, lunges, shrugs and on it goes. As well as that - you can break them down and put them in your luggage when traveling. Pretty hard to do that with a barbell.
I agree 100%, second of course would be the barbell. I try to utilize machines a bit but I always end up spending the bulk of my time on the basics. Dumbbells and barbells
Back in the 70's I worked on Daydream Island, Queensland as a kitchen hand. 6am-10am and 6pm to 10pm 6 days a week. I lived in a Donga (small demountable room about 3m x 2m). I trained every day with the 2 dumbbells that I had brought there with a total of 40lb weights. I found a piece of packing crate timber that was used to ship the island's generator and made an incline sit up bench by nailing an old belt to one end and putting it on the only chair in my room. I used it for sit-ups, incline and flat bench presses and flyes. The island has a small hill - so in my hours off I would run up and down the hill several times - that was my aerobics..on the small beach on the other side were some large rocks that I used for bent over rows.
I was pretty small then but always found a way to train - I loved the Donga - it was right on the beach on the opposite side from the pier, when the tide came in it lapped at the base of my room. When I left the resort the chief Chef asked me to stay because I was the best kitchen hand that he had ever had...I got those pots gleaming. I still take his comment as a complement. So I guess you pretty much grew up in Arnies era didn't you and saw what he was gaining from using gear...How easy or hard was it trying to get hold of it back then?
I grew up with all the BB magazines of the time and the heroes of then - Arny, Lou, Lee Labrada (almost forgotten these days but awesome physique for only 5' 2"), Haney and all the others who I can't remember. I knew nothing about gear until my 40's and then never used it until my 50's...so can't really comment on availability in the 70's. The first Test that I used was given to me by a mate who's Dad trained race horses. My first Test experience was veterinarian grade - that was all that was available to people like me 'on the outside' of the scene..
Bear in mind that I had not stepped foot into a 'real' gym until my late 30's - prior to that it was home gyming and working out in tin sheds - so I didn't socialise much with guys who trained - still don't. Have only ever had two gym partners in all these years.
The 'real gym' situation lasted for a few years and then for various reasons I went back to home gyming. I had a pretty awesome home gym setup for many years before coming to the country where I now live.

dumbbells for sure, activating more fibers to stabilize during each rep, can go heavier because they're easy to toss a side when you reach failure versus a bar that will be on top of you, can train in a smaller space, etc.
That's a tough one - it's a toss up between a cell phone and a mirror - but only if I was a millennial.
Hahaha Good one! If they put as much effort into their training as they do into uploading video's they'd probably get some half decent results in the gym...
Yes mate Some of the young guys in my gym are a joke. I can walk into the gym, do cardio, do my weights, finish with my abs and get ready to leave, and some of those guys will still be sitting on a weight bench on Facebook having done a few halfhearted sets. Then they will look up and ask: "Finished already Amigo?" (That's my nickname here)
Dumbbells the work outs you can get with them are limitless
Undoubtedly Dumbbells! Just more versatile with better stretch and range of motion!
The triangle deadlift bar. I owe a lot of my size and strength to it.

Dave_61I would have to say dumbbells. The reason for this is because you can work basically all muscle groups with dumbbells, unlike any other single piece of equipment that you can choose from. Some muscle groups that come to mind are;
Chest, shoulders, back, biceps, triceps, legs, forearms, even abs and obliques.
Wow, after actually listing the different muscle groups that can be worked with dumbbells, I can see that all of the muscle groups can actually be worked with dumbbells!
It's also easier to use them to sink a body into the murky waters of a small lake. So, yeah, they are very versatile.

Why so many people saying dumbbells? A basic olympic barbell with 45's is the bear bones of any serious gym. A simple squat rack and your gold. Dumbbells are just a great accessory IMO

A few cinder blocks and some chain , got through an entire summer isolated in the country with nothing more than that. I only wish I had some dumbbells that summer.
A loaded cage with a multi bench. Can hit ever muscle group heavy and can isolate most muscles as well.

Your only allowed to do one peice of equipment. You can do deadlifts, stiff leg dead lifts, lunges and leg curls with dumbbells.
I get that Sam but I don’t think you could get as heavy with dumbbells as you could with barbell. With barbell you could do all of those movements with a dumbbell and go 10x heavier. I know it’s preference but I don’t think you could substitute anything for good ol heavy squats and dead’s.
Im with you man. And if you have a bar and plates you can use the plates as dumbbells . Bam! Best of worlds.
Hell ya Bill barbell/plates! I see that G in your name stands for Genius! I was honestly surprised by the amount dumbbell answers cuz I couldn’t go without some heavy deads or squats. And like you said we could just use the plates as dumbbells and boom!
They certainly have their place and I have those as well as the dumbbells. But we all get injured, the beauty of dumbbells is their versatility. You can work around damn near any injury.
Ahh that is a side that I didn’t even consider and I absolutely agree with you there. Super versatile especially when injured. Still I love my barbell!
