BB to Strongman

ad

Just to potentially humiliate myself I've been talked into entering a strongman competition. I mentioned it somewhere a couple of weeks ago that I was considering giving it a whirl "just to see". Well today I put the tick in the box and entered. Actually a reasonable standard of competition, good enough to see some prior uk finalists in the same group.

So here's my prediction, will be interesting to see how it measures up to reality. I think I'll hold my own in static events, and I think I can more than hold my own against almost anyone squatting. Mobile events, now there's a different matter. I think I'm going to get murdered. A close friend of mine has finished top ten in the uk several times, he's putting me through my paces at the moment and thinks I'll do better than I imagine.

Seems to suit where I'm at currently, big and "fluffy" as Grrl calls it. I don't feel like my body can handle comp prep and I know I'd be a mile away from decent stage condition after last years health saga. I'll let you know if / how much of a fool I make of myself in a few weeks.

Any tips / advice etc gratefully received.

Ha! You walked through the door! Bad ass! You definitely have a TON of strength! When I converted the kgs to lbs I remember saying GOTDAMN! Cats a wrecking ball! Fired me all up! You very well may have been made for this Cat! Not in the position to give you advice brother but I'd say transfer your calm, collect, acutely focused demeanor in each lift/event. Fully centering each of the 5 senses, tuning reality out, and summoning ferocious yet controlled anger to get your body out of the "jam"...the jam being the lift. On days I can completely interlock all of that...the power within is tremendous... Anyhow brother excited for this to take place...knuckles!

Respect bro. These events are brutal as is preparation, but I believe that this is what we were made for - to conquer the world. Best of luck to you and have fun doing it.

No sage advice from me. Just a hearty good luck brother!! Oh, and stay safe. It's easy to get hurt with those crazy lifts.

I've done a few strongman comps and what always kills me is lack of cardio so do lots of heavy slead work farmers walk...ect bc not all events are max lifts. train the events that are going to be in your comp if u can find them and look into accessory gear ie elbow sleeves wrist wraps knee wraps a sturdy 13mm belt good lifting straps they all help tremendously and eat as much as you can

The ca dip is the bit that concerns me too.....

eat as much as you can even if you put on some extra fat pounds.... train as heavy as you you can bear to lift max reps should be no more than 2-3 at the most take 10-15 min between sets and repeat 3 times .. but the key is to train as heavy as you can with out hurting yourself .. as far as food lots of carbs lots.... the day before your event carb up on as much complex carbs as you can get and the morning of .. eat pastas and fruit keep you glycemic levels elevated, also grab you some glucose packet I get the fruit flavored gell packs to eat between events.. also make decca your best friend

extra fat pounds

That definitely won't be a problem at the moment. I'm as fat as I've been in a couple of years.

Good to see you chime in GJ ;)

make sure you keep you knees wrapped... if this is new your body will ache like never before but after a few weeks you will adapt. ive trained this way for several years, see what the winners of last years weight class won with... so if the overhead press won with 250pounds train as close to that as you can then move up in weight.. so when you start out in the event the weight your pushing will seem lighter and you wont get fatigued as fast .. god luck

Really no specific advice or tips I can give since that whole strongman stuff is a foreign world to me, but it is awesome that you are going for it. Just another notch you can put in your championship belt.

In a way it probably suits me as a sport better than bodybuilding. Just hope my "broken bits" stay in one piece.....
