ad
Hello guys, so if you can please post your favorite rep ranges for gaining mass and which worked best for you, personally I like the 8-10 and 10-12 range.

6-8
honestly depends on the frequency and volume; I've gotten very big and strong very fast doing a single set of 10 5 days a week for 2-3 weeks, Ive gotten very big and strong very fast doing 10 or 8 sets of triples 2-3x a week (never less though oddly, always had to be 3 or more reps), you really can't bring up one without the context of the other.
the important thing in gaining mass aside from the obvious dietary requirements are big compounds (not heavy, just ones that recruit large numbers of motor units), done frequently in a way that allows you to progress on them- add 5lbs, add a rep to each set, add a whole set, just find some way to progress, thats probably the most important part. Isolation work has its place but I think these should take precedence, do the isolation work as needed.
This isn't rocket science bro, upper body is 10-12 reps with at least 4 sets.. increase resistance per set, hints the name progressive resistance training. The legs can take more of a beating so around 14-16 reps per set with at least 6-8 working sets... Remember muscles like the bicep and calves are meant to do continuous reputation, and can be worked every 24 hours. Heavy weights for low reps don't do much for mass, only strenght gains, powerlifters run a set up like 5/3/1 for a increase in strength, hitting your 1RM and doing negative will increase your strength as well, leave more time for other activities.
For me I prefer 6-10 reps for 4 weeks then 12-15 reps for 2 then repeat
For ME, I definitely notice more size as well as strength gains using 8 reps with heavy weight. I had a lot of experience doing 12-15 and I didn't notice as much gains. It may be different for you though. I know the Austrian Oak always says to do higher reps, and I'm not gonna tell him he's wrong!
This was something that I used to worry about a bit but no longer. Why do we count reps? If you stop at 8 for a given weight but can get 1 more out why stop. These days I go by feel. In saying that though I count reps only as a guage for reference later on. When you are doing something like Dorians High Intensity Training the reps don't really come into count. Now I know he says go for say 6-8 but that's full reps then continue on doing partials untill you can't move the weight another inch. So if you add up the total amount of reps you would be somewhere in the vicinity of 15. Now to most that's high reps. But these are done to absolute failure. Not till you can't do a full rep. See you can still stimulate growth by doing partials when you can no longer do full reps. Also rest pause is another good technique that I use as well. Again it's a Dorian Yates thing that is basically derived from Mike Mentzer HIT workouts. So as I said why count reps. Hav a heavy week a moderate week and a light week. This way your body can have a chance to recover from the stress of heavy workouts. But even on the lighter days still go to absolute failure. You give your body no choice but to grow.
Wallabokkie where can I find references to these HIT work outs you are referring to id like to try the out.
Exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. One of the positive things about the higher rep range of 12-15 is that it lets me lower the weight a little, and focus on getting form correct(I have noticed this). I have always gone to and tried past the point of failure. Your explantation was very eye-opening.I like this, thanks for the input bro.
Not a problem mate. Glad to have helped
I know exactly what you're saying, I feel out my workout too, I'll have to try that dorian yates partail to failure workout(I'm a fan of his lol).
I'm the same, I go by feel more than number. Taking the muscle to true failure is what stimulates growth for me, don't believe that if that's 6 reps or 15 reps it really makes much difference. People put weights down far too easily, if you were aiming for 8 but can do 15, do it.
That's exactly it.
although the most common I've seen around is the 5x5 routine, I prefer the 8-10 rep range as well, 3 or 4 sets. if you get 10 reps on your last set you know it's time to up the weight a little bit (:
I am currently doing German volume training but have had success in the 5x5 workouts.
Anyone else feel that going below 8reps even with strict form that the muscle doesnt ever get a good pump?
Thanks for all the response guys, really appreciate it!
5-8 for most movements. This approximately corresponds with 70-85% of maximum, a great zone for a good combo of strength/growth at the same time.
I'm doing really heavy 5x5 right now.. Works well
5*5=winning
Pyramid sets. I go from lightweight to heavy weight to get both endurance and strength, i got to failure on every single set and eat shit loads of protein/water of course.
i love the classic 10-8-6. played around with alot of different sets and reps and this gets me feeling like someone beat me with a rubber hose every time
I like the idea, 3 sets?
yea man 3 sets for each lift...i throw a drop set in occasionally as well
x2
How many sets?
BostonFor me mass gaining is 90% about the way i am eating. I think you can gain mass as high as the 12-15 rep range. I can do sets of 6-8 but if im not eating enough then i dont gain. Its all about tearing those muscle fibers down and challenging the muscle.
