I just recently took a trip to the west from the Midwest by Amtrak train and just wanted to tell everyone that there was no scanning of my luggage. I didn't check any bags but all of my carry on (3 bags) went unchecked and was carrying: 2 syringes, 2 needles, 2 - 1 ml vials of test and wipes. I didn't even see checked bags being scanned.
So if anyone needs to travel with gear I highly recommend Amtrak trains.
