A fungus among us.

ad

I think I've caught the ringworm fungus. I've got one spot on my arm that is ring like, that has been there a week now. Today I noticed a few more red spots popping up on that side of my torso.

Can I get rid of this with some anti fungal from walmart, or should I see the doc?

I couldn't believe how fast this stuff spread on me. I haven't had to deal with a fungus since I was a little kid at summer camp and caught a little athletes foot.

CBBurrr's picture

Now that I'm almost out of the woods with my battle of the fungus, I thought I'd share an update.

About 2 weeks after I noticed the one little circle on my arm I had gone full fungal! shit got under both arms, as well as wreaked havoc on my crotch. I went through 7 or 8 tubes of lotrimin and lamisil, about $10 a tube.

When I realized that my topicals were not cutting it I went to see my Doc. He'd never seen ringworm that looked quite like mine, and guessed I was having an allergic response to the fungal attack. HE prescribed me an oral anti fungal that I had to take for 10 days. The meds cost $280 for 20 pills.

I still have a little redness now, a month after noticing the small red spot on my arm. This fungus has been about the biggest setback I've had that was gym related.
I've been sleeping above the sheets with no wife contact for a damn month now! The meds left me nauseous, tired and weak, and sore in the joints.

moral of the story... wash your hands often. If you see a little red spot anywhere, don't wash it with a normal soap and wash cloth ( I think thats how I spread mine). Use lamisil, lotrimin, or the generic version if you can find it.

have you tried tea tree oil/soap it is excellent for getting rid of ringworm

CBBurrr's picture

havent tried that yet, but I'll keep it as an option.

White Bolt's picture

Could be ringworms, or even the onset of vitiligo where you will permanently lose pigment where your "rash" currently is.

oldhead73's picture

That could be ring worm, but if you start treatment and it continues to spread on your torso it probably is a rash called Pityriasis Rosea. This is a self limiting illness that is hypothesized to be of viral origin. It starts as a large patch that resembles ring worm, this is called the heralded patch. Then it spreads out in a Christmas tree pattern on the torso with smaller patches. Anyway, if it doesn't clear with anti fungal cream then this is your diagnosis. Start with the anti fungal Clotrimazole 1 percent , it's available over the counter. You can also add a little hydrocortisone for the itch.

maybe shingles even?

No shingles are vesicular and follow a seem a linear dermatom pattern. Typically they are very sensitive, painful and even feel like burning. Also, They never cross the mid line and he says he has some on his arm.

PIN_CUSHION's picture

can't really tell from that photo, but mine felt like a cluster of blisters, raised up and bumpy, and sore a hell.

oldhead73's picture

Exactly they hurt like hell as you know

Get a prescription treatment. I had a fungal spot on my foot for literally ten years. It took 4 months of consistency, wash, dry, prescription ointment, twice a day, sometimes 3. Throughout those 10 years I would use otc and scripts but just until it ran out and the spot faded, then it would come back.

I also had a ring fungus on my underarm. That would come and go for a few years too. Same results when treated for a long ass time, finally hasn't come back.

Along with the towels, do your bed sheets too! But go to the doctor, you'll get a stronger than otc clotrimizole / something else, maybe a steroidal thing, and use it consistently!

I'm gonna try a few more days on my own, then it's off to the Dr.
I've got some sweet ass high dollar health insurance thanks to Obama care, It's only 40 bucks for an office visit. Will put that to good use.

CBBurrr's picture

I'm still battling the fungus!
I did manage to spread it around a bit, I think from my washcloth before I realised what it was. I have it under both arms and the crotch :(
I've tried lotrimin for ringworm, lotrimin ultra, and now I'm trying tinactin.
It has stopped spreading, but is slow to see improvement.
I've probably spent 75 bucks on anitfungals by now.
I'm gonna give bluestar a try next, and if that doesn't do it I'm heading to the Dr.
I've read about some oral meds for this, but it sounds like they are hard on the liver and kidneys.
It's been 2 weeks since my wife has touched me, and I have to sleep above the sheets,

This is gonna push my germaphobia in to overdrive!

TheFlash85's picture

shoul of took my advice, dont ignore it next time, i warned you about that! enjoy! could be months now.

Ron's comment about towels got me thinking....
My gym uses some hippy all natural soap and washes in cold water. If the dryer doesn't get the towels good and hot, I bet the fungi and germs can survive on a towel!

About a week before I realized my red spot was a fungi, I used a gym wash cloth to wipe down my arm pits cause they were stinking a bit. I bet that is when I picked up my ringworm.

I had planned on avoiding the gym till this clears up, but I think I should probably tell the owner about my fungus. Maybe it's time to wash with hot water, or use some bleach.

RonMexico's picture

Wash your towels with bleach. Only use a towel once...no wipe and hang and use again..that tinea corporis will grow on the towel and then you spread it all over yourself.
Lamasil ointment or spray is the best.

CBBurrr's picture

Gotcha, new towel daily. I'm seeing some improvement after a couple days of lotrimin.

I wouldn't be surprised if I got this fungi from a gym towel, I work a couple nighst a month at the gym and wash a lot of towels.

Try blue star ointment! ! http://www.bluestarointment.com/

I used to get that shit all the time!

Muffins's picture

Back in my wrestling days, we use to have a spray that prevented picking this up from the mats. I should get some. I have got some gross shit from the gym

PIN_CUSHION's picture

just picked up some lotramin for ringworm, I hope it does the trick.

Look up bedbug bites and compare to your affected areas. There are a lot of infestations worldwide, even in 4 and 5 star hotels.

The bites look similar to ringworm sometimes. The spots and redness can show up 48 to 72 hours after being bitten

CBBurrr's picture

I've got several red spots that don't have the ring look to them, I'll compare them to bedbug bites.

mwagner630's picture

i got it on my leg and used anti-fungal (athletes foot) foot cream to get rid of it. actually worked as quickly as my team mates prescription meds.
i got the cream from Dollar general for under $3
ring worm is a lovely perk of combat sports

I remember those blue star ointment commercials saying it cures ringworm, worth a try?? maybe but I think I would see a doc over something like this. Good luck bro hope its nothing serious.

Get on an anti-fungal (lotromin, etc.) asap. If it doesn't improve within a few days, get to a doc.
