OK, something I have learned since my reply to this thread is the higher the number the worse your thyroid is working. Meaning that you are borderline hypothyroid, you might want to discuss it with your doctor and see what you can do to get your thyroid working a little better.

Here's a link to a good article http://thyroid.about.com/od/thyroidbasicsthyroid101/a/confusion.htm and a little from it:

"LOW TSH suggests you are closer to HYPERthyroidism (overactive), and have too much thyroid hormone circulating.

HIGH TSH suggests you are closer to HYPOthyroidism (underactive), and you don't have enough thyroid hormone circulating.

If you're being treated with thyroid hormone drugs (such as Synthroid, Levoxyl, Armour, Thyrolar, etc.), and your TSH comes back as too low, your doctor may suggest lowering your dose, or running other tests such as Free T4 and Free T3."

Ask your doctor to check your free T3 and T4 levels. TSH is thyroid stimulating hormone; if your levels are that high then somewhere along the chain-of-communication between your hypothalmus and your thyroid something has possibly gone wrong (think of a faulty cellphone connection - where you yell louder and slower to try to get the other person to understand - "more" TSH can possibly be the hypothalmus yelling louder to the thyroid). That your lab maxes out at 4.2 is very high, but I am not a doctor, so all I can suggest is that you get some follow-up testing and talk to your healthcare provider about the differences between TSH, T3 and T4, free T3 and T4, and what it all means for your body.
