+ 2 The Throwback Middleweight

ad

Everytime I make a boxing post, someone comes in and says "ahh boxing is finished, MMA is where it's at,..yada yada yada". That may be true in your mind and even in the mainstream. But there are some of us who bleed boxing. So do me a favor and keep the digs and MMA shilling out of here. I like MMA. It's a brutal sport and I understand what it takes to do what those guys do. Nothing but respect from me. But it's not my thing. I don't want some damn near naked sweaty mufukr rollin around on the floor with me. Stand up and fuckin fight god dammit!

Anyway, Sergio Martinez is on his last leg. He has dominated the division that made boxing so popular decades ago. He's run through the division like the old throw back middleweights. Always getting dropped, getting up and finishing the show. He broke his left wrist for the second time last fight and destroyed his knee. Looks like the end of his reign is near. Floyd Mayweather has been efficient at ducking him, handpicking opponents in the Jr. Mid div. Chavez Jr. showed us he doesn't have the discipline to step up and take the crown. Canelo looks promising but he *will* have a major set back in sept. when he steps in with Floyd. Machklin, he's an old school bruiser but is just missing something. Of course Andre Ward who is the cream of the crop but is a *boxer*. A technically immaculate , coordinated, defensive boxer. Without taking anything away from him and what he has accomplished, he's flat out boring to watch. And then theres Gennady Golovkin. A silver medal winning olympian with an amateur record of 345-5. Yeah that's not a typo. This calm, cool kid who says shit like "i'm just having fun" after knocking out a top mid weight with a friggen body shot! He has the kind of power that keeps you in a fight no matter what the score card says. The kind we haven't seen since Mike Tyson. Both hands at that. He is technically sound and can box, but almost never gets a chance to. He lands punches and even through the TV they just sound different. Like you can hear the air being pushed out of his opponents body with every thud. It's an incredible thing to watch and i'm telling you it's something special. You might not see a fighter like this for another 25 years. So if your a fan of the sport, do yourself a favor and watch this kid. He just fought Matt Machklin. A very dangerous, very well respected veteran fighter. He threw a left hand to the liver (didn't even look hard) and Machklin threw himself to the floor in agony. I don't know if it was just the liver shot (paralyzes the lower body) or if he broke every rib on the right side, but this guy was on the ground and in tears from the pain. 14 straight knockouts. If he has a hole in his game it's his defense. I haven't gotten a good look at it. But it's because he hasn't needed it. For all I know he could be as defensively sound as Floyd. So he may very well be the most well rounded, naturally gifted fighter in the game today. He's got that kind of power that you can't train to have. The kind that you're just born with. The kind of power that fighters train their whole careers chasing and never come close. And it's all in fluid motion. No haymakers or wild punching like some other power punchers. Defies logic and can't be explained. I for one will be watching attentively at this guy. Canelo has that throw back "stand up in a phone booth and fight" type of style. Chavez jr. (if he gets it together) has that same throw back style. And Genady is just special. So all the big hyped up, very well promoted slop fests that floyd and manny put on, you can keep em and use them as the gauge for the boxing social climate if you want. I will be watching these guys who don't go to put on a show. They do it because fighting makes their soul happy! It may not be enough to get the mainstream to jump in on it, but it's enough to get me excited. Makes me want to go back to my roots.

Those of you who fight , have fought or have been in a boxing gym and witnessed pad work, you'll know immediately what kind of power this kid possesses when you see this.

I can't remember the last time I was this fired up for a fight. I love this fuckin kid! Rubio is in trouble. At least he had the balls to take the fight. Nobody else will fight this kid.

Never saw the gym wars with Chavez Jr. until today. Damn this boy hits haaaard!

When is this fight?

Nitti's picture

The 18th. HBO

Nitti's picture

Almost forgot. When I made this post I mentioned not knowing how good of a defensive game GGG has because be stops everyone (17 straight bedtime stories). Well I've seen it now. He had a couple rough moments in the Stevens fight. He doesn't make mistakes. He is a very good technically defensive fighter. And more importantly he can take a clean punch. Actually he walked right through Stevens punches. This kid is very promising. I am willing to put my chips in and say confidently he is for real

Nitti's picture

I think I can knock Cotto out! Quick!

Nitti's picture

Never happen

i still love boxing. i actually have a friend who s been a serious contender in the middleweights Peter Manfredo Jr. i grew up watching boxing before mma was big.

Nitti's picture

Dayuuuum. That's your friend? How do you know Pete?

Know what, don't answer that. I forgot for a second this is an open forum. I know Pete. Decent fighter. I remember when he got on that show the contender. He has one major flaw. He doesn't like to get hit. Abandons his game plan and ducks ,....literally. Remember Rocky said,...

"life ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep movin forward. How much you can take and keep movin forward. That's how winnin is done!"

I like getting hit. Didn't happen often enough tho. A shame. Fighting makes my soul happy!

Vasyl Lomachenko, this is a kid to watch. He fought for the featherweight title in just his 2nd fight and lost by split decision. Then he fought for and won the WBO featherweight world title in only his 3rd fight. He specifically said his amateur and Olympic career was to get him ready for the big stage and didn't want any soft guys. He wanted to start out at the top. He walked right through Gary Russell Jr. for the title who was previously 24-0. 26 yrs old, I look for big things from him.

The best boxer in the world would get his ass beat down in the octogon, and the best MMA fighter in the world would get his ass knocked the fuck out by by any top ranked boxer. Two different sports.
I love boxing, and the skills and hand speed they possess are amazing.

Nitti's picture

Yes, I actually had this theory tested. My boy is a grappler who teaches kids. He swore he would be able to incapacitate me completely if given the chance. I told him he is nuts so we tested it. I was on my back and twisted like a pretzel in 10 seconds. But I told him when I get up, you better run muthafucker. He ran! Just a preference. I respect MMA, just not for me

Catalyst's picture

I represented my country for judo - on the floor etc, no problem, I win. I'm not playing standing up toe to toe with a boxer though Smile

7gothic's picture

Hey Brother, what was that big fight last year between the long-time boxer and the well established MMA dude...the MMA dude won the MMA bout, but at the post-fight press conference, they asked the MMA dude if he would like to get in the boxing ring, and he said..."I would respectfully decline that challenge---I don't have anymore business in a boxing ring than he did in the octogon"

Engineereddisaster's picture

James Tony Vs. Randy Couture.
Awesome fight... Well to me it was because I'm a wrestler.

7gothic's picture

THAT'S the one.

7gothic's picture

Yep... I'd have to pull a taser (or run from) both of you.
I've got a mean scratch and claw game though.

bill123's picture

I watch boxing, kick boxing. too many submissions and floor time in mma for my taste.

Nitti's picture

Same here. I'm not a fan of grappling. I respect the sport and the men and women who dedicate the time in their craft ,but not for me. Get your sweaty ass balls off my neck mufukr! Fuckin try to mount me bitch. Lol

Wildcats358's picture

What did you think of kelly pavlick? His career up to jermaine Taylor was pretty impressive. He wasn't the most athletic but had brilliant punching power and could pick his spots pretty good. I think alcohol was his down fall but I enjoyed his boxing...

Nitti's picture

He ruined his hands. He didn't take care of them at all. Although I suspect that was partially an excuse to compensate for lack of training. That night he got droppd in the 2nd round and was out of his feet, survived the onslaught and the round. Then to come back and knock out the middleweight champion was fucking awesome! I was still fighting at that point. I was a huge Pavlik fan. Who the hell gets a staph infection that don't go away for 2 years on their hands? And is the middleweight champ? Nah

Wildcats358's picture

That was an exciting fight! My plans fell through and I ended up sitting at home watching by myself. I was literally standing in my living room jumping up and down.

Nitti's picture

That's funny, I was too. I flipped out. I was in shock. Jim Lampley almost slipped and said something he woulda wanted to take back. He lost it. lol.

We have a new middleweight champion and he's,......from Youngstown ohio.

Lol

Engineereddisaster's picture

Good post. Didn't see this until just barely.

Nitti's picture

No boxing fans around anymore, pppfffff! Bitches. Anyway, for the straggler fans 3rd round KO. 17 straight KO's. 26 out of 30 fights ended early. Crazy Mike Tyson number. And my boy just called out Miguel Cotto

Nitti's picture

My boy GGG fights tonight. Some tough journeyman Aussie guy. Predictions? Pain! Knockout before the 9th!

Nitti's picture

Tonight vs Stevens. It will NOT go the distance!! GOlovkin is a beast! He's Gona hurt this kid.

redskins32's picture

What's scary about GGG is that he doesn't look like he's punching hard or even trying too but damn can you hear it and see it in his opponents. Macklins face was a mess after just a few rounds and he even said GGG was the best he has been in the ring with. I have watched GGG's last 7 or so fights and what I've notice is his foot work and positioning has improved greatly and with that comes the leverage he uses to create that kinetic energy in his punches. He punched hard before but these type of punches no one can take over a sustained period. The only way someone will stop him is to hit him hard first to deter him from basically walking you down and destroying you. The only questions I have is his defense and chin because they haven't been tested yet. He is fun to watch.

Nitti's picture

deter him from basically walking you down

I can't see that happening. He's a Russian or from the former Soviet Union. In one of his more recent interviews he said "Courage is the responsibility of EVERY fighter". I can't see him changing up his style. Especially jus because he gets his bell rung. But he already has this mystique about him. He won that Machklin fight before Machklin set foot in the ring. Did you see how scared he was to get hit by this guy? Mach is a skilled , stand in front of you and go blow for blow bruiser type. He was afraid to let his hands go in fear of a counter. Golovkin has that Tyson like fear factor already. It's prett fuckin exciting If u ask me

redskins32's picture

I agree with everything you said. He has been one of the main fighters I have followed the past few years. Nobody was talking about him two years ago but I watched most of his current KO streak. Everyone is beatable though. Tyson had that auroa about him until he got lazy during training and finally met someone that WANTED to hit him back and wasn't scared. once Tyson lost that advantage he was exposed. It could happen to GGG and then maybe he is the one boxer that will run through opponent after opponent. Who knows. But the boxer that will have a chance is one that has speed, heavy hands and can move with a great defense. Andre Ward is that type of boxer and I am buying tickets to that's match when it happens cause it will. Other then ward there is no other boxer I see that could put together a game plan and have the skills to implement it. Martinez finally showed that Father Time might have called his number in his last match. He could have given GGG a good match 3 or 4 years ago but definitely not now. You are correct though there is a plethora of talent current and upcoming in the middle weight divisions. Truly is a new golden age of boxing at that weight class. Fun times ahead for sure!

Nitti's picture

I see your point about Tyson and the fear factor. But I can't see this guy being out of a fight just because the other guy isn't afraid. This kid isn't just special because of the raw power. It's his desire to fight. He loves to go to war and I think would embrace a brawl where he isn't walking through a guy. But, there is one big factor you can't ignore. One day he may fall, but to date, nobody has beaten him so there is no game plan to do so. Manny is a great fighter, but there are at least 3 different game plans to beating him. He can't fuck with good counter punchers. That's what Floyd saw after that 3rd Marquez fight and Floyd jumped all over it. He started calling him out hard right away after ducking him. He knew the game plan to beat manny. Just counter that off balance left hand and he can't handle it. Still to this day that fucker hasn't adjusted. But my point is, there is no game plan to beat Golovkin. Until someone beats him, I'm gonna be an amped up mufukr watching him.

Pelon's picture

I think Floyd deserves to pick his opponents seeing as he has made it to the top by fighting a LOT of top fighters. anyhow! there are a lot of up and comer boxing isn't close to being dead. I love watching Ward though. I've always liked him. Never really gotten into Martinez but I also didn't think he was going to do do Williams the way he did him lmao

Nitti's picture

I happen to be a fan of Floyd. But he has hand picked his opponents to keep that record clear. History won't forgive him for it. You become the best by beating the best out there. And I don't think boxing is dead. A lot of other ppl do. They say mma is taking over

Pelon's picture

I love Floyd. who should he have fought? Since back in the day he was fighting good fighters. chop chop corley, corrales, castillo 2 times, angel!

Nitti's picture

He has fought the best but he shouldn't have ducked Sergio and he definitely shoulda had more confidence in himself in the early days of the manny vs Floyd hype. He ducked manny for a while. Until he saw the chink in his armor that is. Nobody is a better counter puncher than Floyd. You make a mistake and he's Gona make you pay. Manny to this day still sets his feet off balance when he lets the left hand go. Marquez exposed it and then Floyd called him out. But he definitely should have fought Sergio at a catch weight.

Pelon's picture

I think he didn't want to fight manny because manny is a member of this site if you know what I mean ;-) lmao
with martinez he was a nobody until that devastating KO really!! Plus him being taller, southpaw, and Floyd original weight is much lower. kind of why with canelo probably walking around at 30 lbs heavier its like wtf for him. I think he will beat canelo but martinez it would have been a very hard fight
