+ 1 what type of antibiotic is used for abcess?
ad
I know if an abcess gets too bad it has to be drained by the doc but if you catch it early enough you can sometimes get away with taking antibiotics. Does anyone have any info on exactlly what type of antibiotics they would normally give, what dosage, how long, etc? I understand there are many variables but any info would be helpful. I can probably get a prescription so I figure why not have some antibiotics in the stash just in case, Im a prepare for the worst type lol

This post is turning out to be informative. Glad it came up. +3
It just better and safer then be sorry just go and see a doctor.i knew a person that had an abscess in da gluts and refused to go to the doctor and he was self medicating with antibiotics didn't do any good now he's six feet under the infection spread through his blood stream.
BirmonBactrim is also commonly used for treatment of abscess, but being allergic to sulfa, I've never used it.
BirmonInjectable penicillin. My father is a veterinarian, so I've been around this stuff my entire life. Dandogdds was exactly spot on with his dosage and duration for amoxicillin
Doxycycline, clindamycin, or erythromycin are best for abscesses, but frankly a bad abscess needs injectable antibiotics and more than likely will not respond to an oral. The ones that do probably would have healed on their own. If its bad I would just go to your doctor, you risk getting a major staph infection speading to other areas or a blood infection and a much bigger problem that could lead to amputation or possibly death.
Plain Amoxicillin is good and likely the first thing you should take. Augmentin is just a mixture of Amoxi and a lactamase inhibitor . 500 mg tid is a common amount to take for 10 days.
I dont understand "tid", is that like twice a day
I didn't either until this post

thx, didnt know 13 of them lol
BirmonIt is an abbreviation for "ter in die". Latin for "three times a day".
Birmon"TID" means three times a day.
Most anti biotics are 7-10 days right? What would you suggest as a backup for someone who uses only augmentin? If its a mix with amoxicillin ,will amoxicillin be inefficient when/if augmentin doesn't work?
Yea, 10 is more common than 7 but 7 to 10 is the range. If Amoxi won't take care of the infection then Augmentin many times can. The clavulante potassium helps the Amoxicillin take on resistant bacteria and a whole different range of baddies. So I would take Amoxi first then if not Augmentin. Keflix is great if you're allergic to Pen but there are a small amount of people that can also be allergic to Keflix simply because they are allergic to Pen so be careful of that.
TID - three times a day
BID - twice a day
QID - four times a day
prn - as needed for
po - by mouth
BirmonDoxycycline, clindamycin, or erythromycin.
Bactrim is very common for abscess treatment as well
Augmentin. It works quick and its broad range. My doc gave me that the last time I got a killer abscess. Saved me from having it lanced.
Thx, I pinned once last fall and some puss came out. I didnt have swelling or redness or feel heat or anything though and didnt have a temp so I new I was cool but every sense then Ive always thought it would be wise to have an antibiotic on hand just in case.
I keep a bottle of them around now just in case. Just don't use it for every little lump or pip. Make sure you have an abscess (as you clearly do this time). Your body adapts to antibiotics quick if used too often and they become ineffective later.
