What Ammo are you guys running in your firearm if you have one?

ad

I have been looking around for the best possible personal defense rounds for my 9mm regardless of cost for my 9 mm and 38 special. My 38 is the bump in the night gun. The 9mm is kept in my vehicle. I usually buy whatever is on sale for plinking ammo. I would post on a gun board but I figure there is enough homicidal maniacs here to get good advice. Thanks in advance!

9mm +p+ 115gr hi-shok jacketed hollow point.

gold dots, 124+P for the 9mm, 135+P for 38 spl. heard really good things about hornady XTP, and I have some for the .38 somewhere, not sure what weight though.

Wish I could negative 1 you on this one. Just because +p is too expensive for you to shoot at the range doesn't mean it's too expensive for someone else. Besides, a little extra help in the 9mm never hurt anyone.

?? He said he's using the shotgun for home defense in which a short bbl shotgun with buckshot or even high brass bird shot would be perfect. I'm not sure what you're getting at with your statement...

J.Mc.'s picture

I got ya.. Good point. I personally wouldn't use a slug in a HD situation unless that's all I had.

Engineereddisaster's picture

I personally don't think that there is a better home defense gun than a pump action shotgun. In the dark there is nothing more frightening than the sound a shotgun makes when you chamber a round.

J.Mc.'s picture

I keep one in the pipe so the first thing they'll hear is BOOM

Engineereddisaster's picture

lol, I guess BOOM is a little more frightening than CHICK CHICK.

Engineereddisaster's picture

lol.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Sounds like between all the recs you really can't go wrong with any of the ones mentioned. I will grab as many as I can and try them all out.

If you don't handload, check into Speer Lawman loaded with the gold dots. Hell for PD thats about all I load. Another one that might be worth looking into is CorBon. They have some very good PD rounds. Even though I hand load I will still pick some up from time to time for both PD and handgun hunting. And remember...Practice with what you carry..Of course go cheap if its just plinking. But for serious practice shoot what you carry. Feel free to pm me if want to pick my brain about hand loading or any thing guns. Its what I do brother.

But when I feel like a homicidal maniac I bring out my 700 grain s&w 500

Lol. I knew you were just being humble.

I use 177 cal gamo tomahawk pellets for my daisy Smile

Nice bro. That shit can put a small dog right in it's place.

I load Nosler Accubond for my .300 Ultra Mag. I've tried probably every load out there for that particular gun and can't seem to beat the Accubond. I've killed 3 elk and probably 15 deer with that load and it's perfect. A little big for deer but perfect for elk. The bonded core keeps it from blowing too big of holes.

IMHO, frangible rounds would be best for home defense. They do serious damage to soft targets like crackheads, but won't ricochet all over the place taking out that new entertainment system he was after. Point is, whatever you aim at dies, everything else is relatively safe.

Old school black talons in the 9mm and hand loads in the 12ga. Regular ol Remington core-lokts in the 7mm mag...

Engineereddisaster's picture

I came across a bunch of old school black talon that I generally keep stacked in my 9 mm. It's pretty tough to beat a black Talon loaded in +p.
I also reload a gold dot hollow point for the 9mm. Using Blue dot powder you can keep the velocity high and the pressures low and run a load that's nearly as hot as a .357 sig.

J.Mc.'s picture

I also use a little blue dot with some of my 12ga turkey loads. I need to start reloading my centerfire cartridges but I haven't gotten around to that just yet.

I just picked up a sig handgun in 357sig cal. has night sights I have not fired it yet but. I will soon

Cheaperthendirt.com is a really good place to go. Prices are great! I will be making a bulk purchase with them soon.

I got fixed years ago. My gun is all noise now.

I also want to but some steel core rounds and tracer. When I went looking for tracers the store didn't have them but they had steel cores

Fullypumped's picture

I just checked out Ammoengine. Lol nice

Thanks fellas. I have bought federal hydroshocks before. I have two clips loaded with those, but now they are several years old and I am going to fire them at the range just to be safe (shit has to go bad eventually and I don't want to find out how long is too long at the wrong time).
I bought the guns after someone broke into my house while I was sleeping a couple years back. I went ape shit and grabbed a golf club and scared the fucker off. I was lucky he wasn't armed.

RonMexico's picture

Yeah I rotate the clips somewhat regularly, I bought a shitload of clips because I hate reloading the range.
