need advice on a dog

ad

So Ive got a 1yr old pitbull, she is a great dog, well trained, and has never shown any signs of aggression and has never been abused as far as I know. Just a little bit ago my girlfriend got up and got something out of the kitchen cabnet and said she started growling at her then ran at her, so she ran in the next room. I've never bought into that bs about pittbull snapping or being violent dogs. What should I do about this? I wasnt there or I probably would have given the dog a beating for something like that. Any suggestion? I wont be there for another couple day but I think the dog sees me as the alpha since it listens to me more than anyone.

we got her at 8 month. She isn't food agressive, I checked for that when we got her. I think it was something like mistaken identity I'm thinking the dog might not have realized it was her in her house.

Just don't beat the dog, that's not the problem. You have to get all his energy out and pits need 2 hours of exercise at least a day.. I have a german shepherd and he is nice to people he knows but will attack any stranger and I just have to deal with it because I didnt train him to do that it's just his instinct to protect his property. Beating a dog doesnt do anything except hurt the dog long term.

I don't beat the dog. I've got her well trained she just had this one outbust.

First let me ask u how often is your dog exercised, u should really consider having your girl walk ur pit for about an hour each day n please make sure the dog doesn't walk her(dogs neck shouldnt pass your girls leg keep dog on left side ) This will create a special bond between the two if done properly.

ac89's picture

she gets walked and we run her pretty hard everyday.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll keep all this in mind

I'm sure the dog already recognizes that you are the alpha, do you need to help the dog know that she sits lower on the chain than your lady. When you get back you need to take the dog, grab her by the throat and hold her down on her back. The Dog will struggle a bit but keep the dog pinned down just by having your hand on her throat. Hold her there until she submits. Let her back up and try it a couple of times. Keep doing it until she knows not to fight it. (you don't have to choke the bitch, just keep her Down tight). While you've got the dog down have your lady come over and trade you places have her hold the dog down by the throat. If the dog starts to fight it you tell the dog no and help your lady keep control. Now let the dog up and have your lady pin the dog again you helping if needed until your lady can do it by herself. You lady needs to do this a few times every day just so your dog recognizes the fact that she is the bottom of the food chain.
Finally, if you find that your lady is just making shit up, do the same thing to her. Just Kidding bro.
Good luck,
Ed

The kennel training is amazing. Helps housetrain for potty and house respect. Just like you wouldn't let a toddler loose/unattended. Proper pinning is taken from the wolf pack theory and isn't/shouldn't be brutal. So far ive owned couple pitties...3bullmastiff and s mastiff. They've all been uber smart bul can be stubborn. Pittys usually get dumped at shelter as "teenagers". 7mo-1.25years old. Right when in dogworld they're puberty teens. Positive reinforcement and they will return to the good dogs....less stubborn. Fixing them is aldo key when don't at the right age. Pitty males and females 6-7mo. Maybe hit Pitty was hormonal? One year is second or third heat depending on the dog. Fear bites are the old fight/flight self defence.. Positive reinforcement and trust building skills will help.

There's so many theories. Breed itself can tell you the plus/minus on training. Bulls are imo...just like kids with teeth. Strong willed and driven to make dad/momma happy.

Bullmastiffs are amazing! My last boy was 135lb pupp. Total doofus playful with kids etc. superhard to find in the AC. Specialty groups get first dibbs. If you google your area...there sould be a local bullmastiff group nearby. Huge lap pupps!! And fully agree...bad owners. Pits and rotts need special training simply because the size and drive. Moms rotts are uber babes for that same reason. Anyone can get training from a local Pitty group. It really helps.

Bullmastiff/mastiff rescues are very strict. It sucks when ya want one and have space. On the other hand theres not many in the pound because being strict. It can be a double edged sword sometimes.

Nice!! A year isnt too far off!

sometimes bud they just snap, imo their isnt that much to do about it with certain breads unless u spend a shit load in training, my bro had 2 pitbulls around 10 years ago, never shown any sort of aggression either, always been loved and never hit/smacked, my mum was playing with one of them in his lounge room roughing him up a little trying to get him in a game of tug of war with a bit of thick rope, nothing to rough, all of a sudden went for my mums face bit, through her lip and then latched onto her hand, needed 3 stitches in her lip and 5 in her hand, i swear i have never booted something so fucking hard in all my life!! half an hour later i was on my way to the vets with the little bastard putting it down. i dont care if anyone thinks thats cruel, anyone who knows me will tell u im the animal lover out there my border collie i have at my mums is my prized possession, but imo any dog thats attacks or shows aggression to people unprovoked should be put down, get some serious professional help dude, last thing u would ever want is ur missus getting attacked

you just have a sweet heart..

ac89's picture

She has never been aggressive before twards anything, but I do agree that dog do have the instinct to chase and that it could have been the dog challenging her like a wolf would do in a pact. I know its hard to figure it out through a post but Ialso needed to vent a little because it pissed me hearing that the dog did that.

power_house's picture

you can never tell with a pit bro, i have a 3 yr old male, and is the nicest to every body, but he can sense something about some people and he fucking snaps, there is something that your dog doesnt like about your gf. the only reason i can see is that she is getting more of your attention than your dog. dogs do get jealous and then pissed. the temper on a dog ie.pit is like a dude on tren, cool one min but then fucking wack when someone/something happens he/she dont like. it also plays into the breed, how there genes are. it could be a 100 of things bro, check out a trainer and see if that helps in keeping the dog..

ac89's picture

The dog is both of ours and it's probably around her more than me

power_house's picture

i can understand that bro, you never know whats going on in a dogs head. i know if i have a football in my hand my dog with do work to get that thing..it's just something with him, he also HATES swings .. get on a swing and he will eat your ass up.. not sure what it is, maybe scared of something flying around.. maybe she did something to scare your dog, opening the cabinet did she slam the door?

ac89's picture

That what I thought because the dog goes absolutly nuts when the garage door goes up and tries to bite the hell out of it. Same thing with fans that go side to side

power_house's picture

yea man little stupid things get my dog, like flies lol.. funny shit ive never seen, plus he will eat the hell outta bees? not sure why , he got stung once and has been on the hunt ever sense.. Is your dog fixed?

ac89's picture

yeah she is. she also does dumb crap like chase refletion from my phone on the ceiling and goes nuts is a laser pointer is brought out

fast48's picture

She needs to assert dominance by pinning the dog. Bulls are stubbern sometimes. You know pinning technique? Pin til dog lays limp.

fast48's picture

Actually im a trainer and i do rescue for pitties only. My group is one of the biggest in the states. Been doing rescue since 93. And in 2010 rescued and assisted over 500 pitties only. Ones on my lsp right now.

Engineereddisaster's picture

I agree on the pinning.

fast48's picture

As long as his Pitty gets help its all good. :). Rescue is a chore but all for the dogs. Glad your rescuing

ac89's picture

The dog has never done anything like that. She is pretty small so it scared her. She has nevr previously been scared of it

Engineereddisaster's picture

Sorry Grrrl I've gotta disagree, pinning is winning. Pinning for the whole family. Diggs gotta know it's place in the food chain.

Engineereddisaster's picture

Come on Grrrl, you know you want to pin your dogs... Just do it. It feels good. Everyone else is doing it. Pin your dog, then let Goth do it. Who knows you might like it.. :-)

Actually, all bs aside, I wouldn't pin service dog. However, if one is just raising a family pet and buddy, I think pinning is a kind way of putting a dog in place.

What would you suggest a dog owner to do, say someone has a Pit that they raised as a puppy but just wanted him as a family pet, he's an in tact 11 month old male starting to establish dominance to the lady of the house and the children?

Engineereddisaster's picture

This is my imaginary dog that needs to be pinned, so you really don't need to see the interactions with the family. Just assume that the dog's best treatment is to be pinned. Lol.

Is Wayne Brady gonna have to pin a dog?

power_house's picture

she might not want to try that bro, not trying to step on your opinion cause your my dude but she seems to be scared of the dog already and she can sense that. you trying to pin a female pit that dont like you already you asking to get ate the fuck alive..

fast48's picture

No worries. Pitty only rescue was my side business a long time. They're great dogs. Peace

power_house's picture

yea man ive got a 3 yr old blue, i wouldnt trade him for a new car.. the dogs got my back better than anyone..

fast48's picture

My blue i rescued from a drug dealer. He was 4mo and the guy had several die because cars etc....abuse. Walked into dudes yard...walked out. Definite best friend!
