Hardgainer? Can't gain weight? READ THIS!!!
Diet is 75% of bulking up IMO. You can lift like Ronnie Coleman, but bottom line you will not grow any muscle without the calories behind it for bulking. Simple biology and one equation---->
Calorie balance=Calories in - Calorie expenditure
If you aren't gaining weight, you are not in a positive calorie balance so you need to either cut out all cardio, eat more, or both. Eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight; eat less calories than you burn, you will lose weight. The kind of weight you gain or lose is dependent on your macronutrient breakdown, timing of meals, training, cardio, etc. Try adding up your calories using the links at the bottom of the page, many people who think they "eat all the time" actually eat under 3000 calories per day, which is very low for a bulking diet . Get used to eating frequently also, like every 3 hours tops. The only time I was hungry on my last bulker was right when I woke up in the morning. Remember: an appetite is not necessary to eat. You need to get used to eating what/when you MUST, not what/when you want.
There are two ways to bulk: A clean bulk (slower, but leaner gains) and a dirty bulk (faster gains, more fat storage if metabolism isn’t fast) The main difference is that on a clean bulk, you NEVER eat carbs and fats together. Milk is bad for this reason. Eating carbs and fats together causes almost all of the fat to get stored instead of used for energy. Don’t eat carbs in your last 2 meals of the day because they get stored as fat while you sleep. Eat at least 40g protein with every meal, and make meals either protein /fat or protein /carb.
PWO=Post Workout , the most anabolic (muscle building) time in anyone’s day is the half hour following a workout . It is best to use a fast-acting protein like Whey. Your muscles soak up protein like a sponge. It is also useful to eat twice as many carbs as protein to help shuttle the proteins to the muscles. The PWO shakes I use are
---50g Optimum Nutrition Whey
---50g Dextrose (Corn sugar, causes an insulin spike to increase absorption of protein )
---50g Maltodextrin (Powdered complex carb supplement )
Some people prefer to drop the maltodextrin and just do 100g of dextrose. Try both and see what works for you.
Eating approximately every 2.5 to 3 hours is good for 3 reasons…
1. You can eat more calories in a day if your meals are smaller. Its easier to eat 600 calorie meals 6 times a day then it is to eat 1200 calorie meals 3 times a day.
2. Your body can only digest so many calories at a meal, and the rest gets stored as fat. Lowering the amount of food eaten at one time reduces the “extra” over what you need.
3. Muscles start to catabolize (break down) if they are without protein for 3-4 hours unless you are sleeping. Hell, when I'm bulking I drink a milk/casein shake when I get up to piss at night.
**For all you 130-150 pounders thinking about taking steroids... **re-evaluate your diets. If you can't gain weight naturally, steroids aren't going to do anything for you except shrink your balls. Think about it... raw materials to form muscles have to come from somewhere right? They don't just appear out of thin air. Calories are the bricks that are building your house.
Try eating 300g protein , 400g carbs, and 150g fats.
You will grow.
A couple useful links
1) www.fitday.com <----Huge database of foods, can look up pro/fat/carbs and calories on them.
2) http://www.ntwrks.com/~mikev/chart1.html <------Basically the same
3) http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/berardi41.htm <----- An equation that you
plug in your weight and bodyfat percentage and it will tell you how many calories you need to eat every day to grow.
If your diet is "all that and a bag of chips", and you STILL weigh 140 pounds dripping wet, either you have a SERIOUS thyroid problem or your training sucks. Remember "The Big 5" - Squat, Deadlift, Row, Bench, Military.

Hardgainers need to do 20 minutes cardio a week this will help your bodies to absorb more macros.
Actually the only way I can gain weight is by using gear. I've been to the doc and they did blood tests and tested my thyroid. Said it was all good. As far as how I gain....I eat like crazy and the when I think I can't have another bite I drink a protein shake. When I'm bulking I pretty much eat what I want. I know some bros are thinking what!!!??? I do get a little chub but then it's shredding time. If your gotta carry around food in your pockets DO IT. If you wake up in the middle of the night EAT.
Maybe your eating a lot of low calorie foods.. Eat a jar of peanut butter a day and a tub of ice cream on top of he normal diet ill gaurentee you'll pack the weight on even without gear
No offense to whomever wrote this up but it's absolutely chalked full of "bro science" Although I'm sure a lot of it was very helpful to many some of it is pretty ridiculous.
skalpabro, just cus its bro science doesn't make it false. most of what we know about bulk dieting and cycling is ALL bro science because its all from personal experience and trial and error. there arent many studies done on how to bulk and gain the most muscle. its all learning from other bros and what worked for them and tailoring their ideas for yourself. ...i thought it was a good write up bro.
W1NG3DGreat read but u forgot the greatest tool of all!! The almighty food processor! 2 cups of macadamia nuts! A tbl spoon or 2 of peanut butter a couple bananas and half a dozen eggwhites and BAM! 2000+ calories in one meal!
nom noms!!
Some ppl just cant force themselves to eat every 3 hours and its normally due to the fact hey just cant be arsed chewing!
Buy a few kilos of unsalted nuts every week and chuck em in your processor youd be surprised how easy they are to consume! You could 'drink' 5000+ calories a day just by washing down your steak with a peanut smoothie ;p
Ps add some dates and/or sugarcane syrup if youre choice of nuts tastes too bitter..
Why chew when u can process a smoothie
This is what I'm talkin' about!!!!
I like that sounds good!!
Great information! Started implementing this information into my diet 9 weeks ago and have gained a solid 6 kg of lean muscle mass! Thanks heaps! Am now up to 72 kg!
Good stuff...
AnonGood read. I do have to say, though, that it's not ALWAYS true that if you're at 130-150 pounds that your diet is the issue. In some cases that really is your max natural weight. I'm an example. Diet and workout are on point. My natural weight is just under 150 and nothing I've ever done can break me past that except for gear.
biogenetixA lot of really valuable nutritional information... Question how much whey protein in your pwo? I have heard a multitude of answers on the subject on how much a persons body can take at a sitting I personally drink 40g pwo but I have heard 60g, 45g, 32g ect. and was wondering if you had any info on it or is it different for everyone?
awesome info
Very good info, thanks for sharing
Excellent info!
Great information bro, Keep it up
Good post mate. A few guy's need to look into supplementing their diet with other things. There is another supplement called MCT oil. It is a medium chain fat basicaly. It is a great way to increase you caloric intake, without taking in extra saturated fats. I love the stuff and use it to cook all my meals in. You can also eat it by the spoon full for some extra energy. The best one to get comes from coconut. The palm oil one is not as healthy as the coconut. I have seen heaps of people saying to get stuck into dairy. I love my dairy products as well, however I feel that even though you may be a hard gainer you should still be using low fat varieties.
To look like a monster you have to eat like one!! lol
Steroid cycle on hold. Diet recalibration begins. Thanks bro very great info
If you don't mind the dirty calories adding 8 ounces of heavy cream in stead of water or mill will add an easy 900-1000 calories to your daily intake.
you can see my pic im pretty skinny would cream be to much even for somone like me?
bro where i can find Dextrose and Maltodextrin. i tried at GNC but nathing.
musclefeast.com is one of the best sites to get any pure workout supplement. They have almost everything you can imagine, reasonable prices, and pretty quick shipping. Hope it helps.
Very nice and Simple website thanks!
ouch that equation says I burn 5530 calories a day. I was thinking I am almost barely eating that a day. I need to step it up I guess need to eat around 6500 calories a day somehow. Also I have been doing just whey as post workout so I am going to get some carbs in with it hopefully that will help out some too.
OE2000Great post! Thanks for all that information!
