Ok enough with the heat pad. Who in here does cold plunge? Been looking into it for a while now. Can't decide which one to buy.

I'm cheap and I like to tinker so I've built my own.
I've made one from a freezer then later wanted it to be a little "cooler" so built a narrow jacuzzi like area out of concrete, block, insulation foam, pond liner, I stoned the inside so it would look nice, similar to smurfs below. I have it so you can jump in or go down a ladder and stand or sit. I hooked it up to an old freezer that is on a temperature controlled and I have a 20" filter partially submerged inside the freezer which is full of water. I used Al-pex to create a cold exchanger insider by wrapping it around and back and forth as much as possible. I set the cooler at 1*C and the pump to activate when the temperature of the cold plunge reaches 12C then shuts off when it reaches 8c. I have PVC out at the bottom of the plunge, it goes through and up inside the top of the deep freezer in to the filter, it's heavily sealed with silicone around the connection points into the filter and the top stays out of the water just for safety. the inlet is up at the top part of the plunge.
This was significantly cheaper and more esthetic than having a blow up or deep chest freezer.
The cost of the freezer was about $50 used, sealed it with marine epoxy. I got a lot of the material from a buddy who does construction and block left over. Used a couple bags of concrete. All in all, I probably spent $300...
I still turn it on and off before getting in but it's not necessary, it's a precaution. I've thought about putting a magnetic deadman switch on cover but that's just overkill at this point.
It fits two people, stays cold all the time, the ground really helps insulate.
The cover is a thick piece of insulation foam covered with wood with a thin rubber bevel to help it stay sealed. it plops over the top like those fancy candles.

How the fuck are you smart enough, creative enough, and capable enough to build such a project with safety checks included and not know it’s spelled aesthetic instead of esthetic….

I love it.

swoleB's picture

That's a whole project you got going on there. I'm sure it's worth not having to drop 10x the price for an insulated tub and chiller. Now give us some feedback on the benefits. I'm interested in the mental benefits more than anything.

Aside from the increased energy and recovery, I noticed I lean out quicker when I use it regularly.
I don't use it after the gym, not for 6hrs or so. I do it maybe an hour or two before.

Boosts recovery, pain management, and circulation. Improves mental toughness, sleep, and stress reduction. Balls with go into hibernation, but they do come back out.

You cold plunge yourself or just read the brochure? I've been doing cold showers for 3-5 minutes but the temperature is nowhere near the 30s degrees like the it should be. I do notice more energy and mental focus durring my workouts.

showers are way harder than a tub. I can't get showers, it's like torture

Yeah my gym has one that I hit in the morning before work. Oddly enough there’s a sign in there that says everything I said above. I read it to take my mind off my frozen balls

Do you experience all those benefits you mentioned?

I’ll be honest, I think it’s all placebo. It definitely wakes me up, but I think a cold shower probably accomplishes the same effect.

I’m a skeptic, and don’t really buy into a lot of the cold plunge, red light therapy, salt room ect…

This sounds like the way to do it if you are halfway handy!

Genius. Did you find the schematics online or engineer that yourself? Either way sounds awesome especially for that price

Hell in this weather I just leave the pool unheated and jump in! Keep the hot tub on to warm up afterwards!

One of the best investments of my life

Hahaha had to flex a little bit- I’m sure some guys will give you some legitimate cold plunge recommendations.

I am 110% in favor of cryotherapy and contrast therapy! With contrast the alternating temperatures constrict/dilate which improves circulation, reduces inflammation, alleviates muscle soreness, and essentially flushes out your muscles by providing fresh oxygenated blood!
