+ 3 Rhabdomyolysis

ad

Just wanted to make some more people aware that after a long break lifting heavy weights after vivid not too push too hard when going back to the gym. Sounds obvious yeah, but you also want to get your body back as big and strong as it was asap. Anyway. I spent less than 2 hours on a back workout. I had done 45 mins chest days before. This time was more intense but way less weight than I was used to just 6 months ago. Had only done bits of CV and very light weights in covid time. So the night after I noticed my piss went dark brown like cola. Same in the morning and sure enough I was taken to hospital with Rhabdo. My creatine kinase level was 49,000 - normal is meant to be 100 but severe cases can go to 200,000. It can cause kidney failure and permanent damage. Just thought I'd better let people know to take it easy as there might be a few cases as the gyms open up in places. There was someone at the hospital the day before me with the same thing. And this has slowed me right down.

I have had it once in July 2020 from dehydration coupled with gross overuse of stimulant-containing supplements. Hospital for two days, a couple banana bags and Ativan to relax the muscles, sleep and let the body recover. Mine presented with muscle spasms in the arm that made me keep dropping things. Two hours later I was in the ER.

Been there and done that with rhabdo. Ended up in hospital for an extended stay after one of my comps. CK over 185,000. Had me on dilaudid and valium for pain. Would black out from the pain of the spasms in my legs. Was in 4 different categories and also in two overalls (open and masters). Way too much posing. All the flexing during posing is what did me in. Never entered that many categories again. Doesn't help that you are dehydrated also. Prime candidate for rhabdo. I have done some tough workout sessions and never got it. Flexing/posing is the hardest on the muscles. Here is my experience with it.

Always good to remind people about it.

Wow, sounds like you had it way worse. I have a mate who had readings that high once -for other readings. It's serious stuff. I think you're right the dehydration really affects it.
Btw, your description was a lot better than mine but I suppose you did go through a lot worse.
Thanks for the post it was really interesting to hear your story. Hopefully other people can learn from our mistakes and avoid this.
Have you had it since ? (I read once you get it you're more susceptible but I'm sceptical as you know what to avoid then)
Hopefully we never have to deal with it again

Just had it that one time. I don't enter as many categories now when I do a show which has helped prevent it I believe.

Has anyone read the Rabdo the clown cartoons in CrossFit?

Mightymike's picture

Always did think CrossFit was a bit nuts lol.
I looked it up after you said this, led me to loads of people's personal stories. Mine doesn't seem as bad as some of them now. Thanks
Sounds like hydration, diet, stress and fatigue can play as big a part as the workout sometimes.

Yeah that stuff is serious. We had a new guy fall out with it after a hard summer day of loading pipe in the rack at work. First thought it was just dehydration, but after a doctor visit he said rhabdomyolysis.. First time I've ever heard of it... Glad ur better bro..

Mightymike's picture

Yeah, it is serious. They kept talking about if the kidneys fail you'll be on dialysis for life and that's scary.
Thanks, I'm feeling better now.
I was back in the gym yesterday. 45 mins chest. Lost so much size and strength over the gyms shutting and with Corona virus it's heartbreaking.
Got lots of gains to make back now though.

I’ve “heard” of someone dying from it from CrossFit

Mightymike's picture

Yeah, I've heard CrossFit 'ers get it. Think I heard it on the jre podcast. They said at the hospital the broken down muscle gets stuck in the kidneys and can cause kidney failure and put you on dialysis for life. I've always trained hard but never thought I'd get it.

Jesus dude, less than 2 hours on your back like that isn't a lot. I hope you are okay.

Mightymike's picture

I know that's what I thought. I used to train much longer. I was hitting it a bit hard cos I miss being big and strong but I never thought I'd overdone it that much. I had sore biceps but I'm used to that. I was also using a massage gun to get a knot out of my lat/back of shoulder. Don't know if that broke down some muscle and maybe contributed to it.
Thanks, much better now. Hospitals are not fun places, especially with the covid regulations atm. That Rhabdo is scary too cos it can f up your kidneys for good!
Going to have to just take it slowly now. I'll get there.

Idk with the massage gun. If the muscle was damaged bad, I guess it could make it worse. But otherwise they are a great tool for recovery and injury healing. I like mine anyway.

Mightymike's picture

Just read a few articles and there are some that suggest that the muscle breakdown contributes to the Rhabdo. There was another saying it's not Rhabdo but toxins. Either way I think it might have contributed to mine. It wasn't ordinary massaging. I had a large knot or scarred tissue on my lat and I was hammering it with the gun that day as well as I had had some success reducing the size and pain of the injury.

No it's definitely helping, I had a big hard lump of hard tissue or something there and the gun has broken it up I meant the bits of broken down scar tissue might have made the Rhabdo worse. Just an idea, might be wrong. But yeah, I like the gun. I use a car buffer sometimes as well.
