+ 2 Let's talk deadlift..
ad
Lately I've been increasing my deadlift 5-10 lbs a week, the hardest part for me is the initial pull from the floor to right below the knee. I can do 725 lbs rack pulls from that point up... so If I can build the strength from the floor to the knee, I could theoretical deadlift 650-700 lbs... any tips, links, pointers... I do have a few dvd's I've study from the WestSide Barbell Club and they pretty much put the emphasis on deficit deadlifts...

Here's a link to the video of Magnusson 1015 lbs DL.

goblue79Find your weakest point and concentrate on that. Sounds obvious right? Alot of people don't do it though.
380lbs 4reps yeah buddy champion I know at night doing deads had to get in now can't do it in morning: )
Hell yeah bro, I bet you can get 405 for 2... next time give it a shot, I'm sure you got it :D/l
Nice pic
Man these deadlift weights are insane im jealous. Iv finally hit 395 for 5 sets of 5 2xweek but ive kind of been stuck there for awhile starting to catch some burning in my lower back and numbness in my right foot while setting thinking I jumped up in weight to fast probably should back off a bit or at least to 1x a wek ann thoughts or help rhanks brothers.
75% legs 25% back.... do some heavy ass squats... I stop DLing twice a week down to once a week, and squat three times a week now... two days front squats, one day back squat... I can front squat 375 for one, and 315 for 12... back squat 405 x 2... don't believe me?... I will happily post videos.
Ok this may be a stupid ?. What is a back and front squat. I just do reg squats. Im no where that weight on my squat. I can hit 225 for 10 and 265 for 1sometimes 2.

Try chains bro. Im hittin 600+. Im in love with the heavy chains
Deficits helped me A LOT with my power off the floor. I personally think that the best things you can do for your deadlift is
Once i started doing those things, my deadlift went up A LOT. Good luck
Paused low bar squats, from a below parallel box with a DL stance (Im assuming you pull conventional?) have made me extremely powerful off the floor, especially that initial "break." I also agree with everyone else that getting your squat up in general will be of great benefit but I've found that this very closely mimics the bottom portion of the DL and therefore (again, at least for me) has had great carryover to my DL in terms of breaking from the floor.
from there, get those hamstrings, glutes, and lats as big and strong as possible; they're all heavily involved in the floor to knee portion of the lift and depending on what you pull right now, since recovery from heavy pulling can take awhile once you get up there, you could easily hit those muscle groups pretty hard 3x a week and make tremendous strength gains on them which in my experience will lead to a faster DL increase than say deadlifting alone (or doing variants because regardless of what you choose, be it deficit deads, bands, etc, you're facing CNS fatigue that, again depending on what you pull, can take awhile to recover from.)
as far as deficit deads, I personally did not find them useful for breaking the floor as much as I did for lockout simply because they extended the ROM of the movement making lockout all the more difficult. I believe I am in the minority in this respect and am not in any way saying not to utilize them, just something to keep in the back of your mind. However, I will say, and I think a lot of big pullers will agree with me on this one, that if you do utilize deficit pulls, don't set the deficit more than 2-3 inches; it changes the mechanics of the movement (the actual from the floor pull) too drastically. Infact there was a point where I pulled from around a 5+ inch deficit for maybe a month or so (with my "more must be better attitude") and when I went to pull from the floor, I actually pulled LESS than from that 5in deficit; the difference in the movement and leverages was that significant.
Speed dead lifts between 50-60 percent do it for singles up to 6 right after ur max effort if do wsb style and also on speed day . Work ur lower back some more with extensions build up strength and endurance for it
I've been doing them with bands after heavy pulls. I pulled 505 x2 yesterday, I can't wait to hit that six hundred bro... Right now, Im about to switch to deficit deadlifts.
That's dope man just keep at it strength game is all about patience maybe more heavy ab work n wide grip pulls if u haven't tried em I know that about 90 percent of the time increasing ur lifts is finding tthe best assistance lifts u seem to have it in check tho pulling some good weight
Deleted...
Do different variations of dead lifting too such as stiff leg and sumo. Also good mornings and deep squats with a wider stance.
Keep in mind the beginning of the exercise is the most explosive part. Work on your explosive power for your posterior chain.
I'm no super heavy deadlifter but one thing I learned from a natty old dead lifter was when pulling, drive your heals into the ground as hard as you can, it helps that little extra power
VERY TRUE STATEMENT
The first part of the lift is with your legs. Your ass is down and you pull the bar off the floor pushing with the legs. The bar rides up the shins - I don't wear any protective gear so my shins are all bruised from deadlifting. I've got the bar fairly high off the floor before I transfer the pulling motion to my back and straighten out. I am for sure no powerlifting coach but I'm told my form on the deadlift is excellent. So yeah, bro, my tip for you if your sticking on the initial part of the movement is squat, squat and more squat. LOL If you look at the video of Ronnie Coleman deadlifting 800 lbs - don't copy that. That is a testimony to Ronnie's freaky strength, but he's got his legs locked out and is pulling that 800 lbs. with his massive back. For us mortals with much lighter weight, that's a potential trip to the hospital with a heavy enough bar.
Stiff legged deadlifts to build your hamstrings. Most people's least develop muscles and massively important in the first 6" of a deadlift.
Correct champ if I'm wrong just been studying more does training the hams more and glutes help with
Dreads lift or am I saying it wrong
no bro, I understand what you mean... already been killing the hammys and deep squats... I guess I'll do deep, speed band squats to help with the explosive lift off...
honestly, id really pause those squats to get the most out of them. the deadlift has no eccentric loading phase so if you take away the stretch reflex from a squat that closely mimics your body position when initially pulling off the floor, you mimic that and the carryover will be greater.
I've been focusing on heavy front squat well below parallel coupled with back squats heavy ass singles... 405-420
Try doing deads standing on a 45lb plate that should help build lower end. Also speed deads doing this. Help with explosion from the ground.
I've been doing speed deadlift with 225 and 60 lbs bands... we have all kinda boards, and boxes etc.. so I'll grab on tomorrow and stand on it, while I speed lift... thanks bro
Deadlifts on a Deficit, stiff leg dead lifts and deep squats have made a huge difference on my deadlift.
I've been doing deep pause squats, both front and back.. I notice a gain of 1.2" on my quads within 2 weeks from doing heavy ass front squats... 315 for 5 reps, and I always like to end really heavy at 395 lbs for one... I know your hammys have a lot to do with it, maybe really heavy hammy curls, on top of the deficits?
Yes sir blast those hammies and youll see a difference. Also I only do deads every other week and im able to add 20 lbs to my lift and break my pr. Im at 455 right now and hope to hit 475 this weekend.
