how much do you bench???

ad

I get this all the time as if it's the standard to judge progression. I bench what I bench...bitch...load a plate and bench what you bench. I can bench a shit ton believe you me...does that help in any way? No. There is always a stronger gorilla. What did he do to get so strong you ask? He benched! Focus on your weight fatigue...that is what will hinder gains...by all means ask what routine you abide by...what foods might have been utilized to accomplish a plateau burst...because I will tell you...a belly full of ground turkey will lift more than a belly of your stupid preworkout....i just ranted...sue me

The real proof of strength are simply Front Squats and Overhead press.

ALL people who are beasts at FS and OHP most likely have massive Back squats/Pulls and Presses as well. Not always the case the other way around.

I haven't done flat bench in at least a year. Incline, crossovers, and dips seems to work my pecs more effectively.

bolt781's picture

I hear that...we aim for results and utilize lifts that give them. I was always strength driven, now I am moving more towards the actual look of a bodybuilder...

gensolomon's picture

So..... how much do you bench anyway?? lol ....he he....

bolt781's picture

Lol I actually have no clue what my 1rm is now. My best ever was 585. Probably wont ever hit that number again as my priorities have changed...

gensolomon's picture

holy shit.... thats insane.

Shoulder surgery is Wendy I got from benching heavy

BrOwsing's picture

Same here. Torn/frayed rotator cuff. It's better now but I don't take it above 225. I have nothing to prove.

xb89rev's picture

I had problems with my rotator cuff while benching aswell. Luckily I got it checked in time and recovered completely (after 6-7 months of rehab). A couple of years later I won't go over 270-280. Better be safe.

Had an interesting encounter yesterday. A lad asked me to spot for him, has 4 plates per side so 180kgs. He usually trains with a mate and I've noticed them struggling with 3. You know the type, the spotter isn't "spotting", he's rowing half the weight. Between them they've convinced themselves they can press it.,,,,

First rep, onto his chest, can't move it an inch. He says "that doesn't usually happen". I respond, that's because your mate lifts it for you, I'm just spotting. I peel the bar off the lad and he walks off.

Why is it people don't get what a "spot" actually is one bench press?

gensolomon's picture

1 finger even makes enormous difference, to the point where it surprises you how light the bar feels the second someone touches it.

bolt781's picture

No kidding! Beyond me why someone that doesn't bang out 315 as if it were a warm up, would even try 405 lol. Bench bench bench. The biggest focus. You can tell the guys that focus too much on bench by the rounded over shoulders and bad posture.

So what you're saying is a "spot" isn't there to pull 20% of the weight? Blasphemy Cat!!

Catalyst's picture

20%? And the rest lol!

Joking aside, the problem is people don't know how to spot. There's only three people I'll have spot for me because most people don't have a clue what they're doing.

bolt781's picture

I've never had a spot. Until recently, my cousin, to utilize for forced negatives when he is able to show up. I've had my lady step in the garage to have an eye on me when I'm going super heavy. It could be disastrous when I have 5 plates and then some I know...luckily I have a real good beed on where my strength is each day. I'm in acute tune with where my limit is. I take that back...when I did some work with a powerlifter buddy I use to know he spotted me. I wasn't even close to pushin what I push now though. Its intense when you have an amount that could be deadly on the bar, it really puts you in the moment, right where I want to be! I dont condone doing that though, I'm just sick when it comes to lifting

I'm at 175lbs now and I can 1 rep max 335lbs and I rep 225lb at sets of 10 easy

BrOwsing's picture

Wow nice

It doesn't do me much good, but as 37 I'm still pursuing that triple bodyweight bench press. I don't know why, just never got over it. I could care less what others think of me now, I'm not trying to impress anyone (anymore) but I am no less obsessed with it now then I was then.

Funny thing is, people ask what I bench all the time. I lie, I take 100 pounds off it because nobody is going to believe it anyway.

Nothing better for me then actually putting up that weight on meet day though.

I have to say though, I never understood the concept of wanting to LOOK like you move a lot of weight above actually being capable. I look like an average chubby dude and I love being a sleeper on meet day.

2 torn pecs = i dont give a fuck when asked this

never really cared what my 1rep max is... for any movement. i believe i can get 275 up at least once. but for incline dumbell, i currently rep the 120s for at least 6.

as i got more experienced in the gym, i stopped going by weight. i go by reps, sets, how i feel, and how i look in the mirror.

K.Bear210's picture

I can't bench to save my life. Never did heavy sets growing up so I think that saved my shoulders but never gave me any push power was the trade off. Only recently changed up my form for powerlifting and the weights are climbing ever so slowly.

When people ask me how much I bench I usually shed a tear and run to the bathroom

Truthbetolled's picture

I come from a power lifting background. 1 rep max just leads to a bad shoulder. I do nothing lower than 6 reps now. Clean form and focus. Change up your excises each week and change the day you work out chest.

Gymjunkie01's picture

I do 6 sets of 4 reps my last set I add weight and get a partner to spot me and do 8 reps of negatives .. But I'm with cat I care less anymore lol I'm not there to show off I'm there to work

Exactly, always switch up the amounts of weight, reps, grip etc...

bolt781's picture

I think there was a time when we all were about benching and how much we could lift...its one of the steps we take initially when starting the lifestyle...but we know it means nothing now unless yes...you are in a contest

Catalyst's picture

I care so little these days about what my 1 rep max is I couldn't even answer that question. "More than most, less than plenty".

bolt781's picture

Hahaha awesome! My new answer to that question
