What kind of rice do you all buy
ad
So i like jasmine and basmati rice. The problem is, the only good rice that I can find in the grocery store that cooks nice in the rice cooker is from that brand RiceSelect. I love their rice, but it's crazy expensive, and I know I shouldn't be paying $7 for 2lbs of rice...
So what brand do you's get? I just want something that cooks nice in a rice cooker that isn't $3.50-4 a lb.

I buy "Birds Eye" steamfresh! 4 minutes in the micro & I have my rice for the day! Costs $1 dollar a bag at Walmart in the frozen veggies section. ConvenientAF
For your strength orientated sessions stick to white Jacket potatoes bud - they are so much more carbohydrate and nutrient/vitamin dense than rice. If i'd only been eating rice in the day I simply wouldn't have the energy to train.
Really? I definitely eat a lot of potatoes, and maybe they’re different over here (we have Idaho and red skin but I’m not sure about white jacket), but I watched an hour talk by Stan efferding and he was saying primary carb source should be white rice for strongman & PL, especially cuz you can eat more of it. He said potatoes are good but not as calorie dense so he always opts for rice.
I was gonna keep a mix of the two, but I was gonna try cutting out pasta for a bit and replacing it with rice and see if I noticed a difference.
A lot of it depends on how you tolerate and break down foods personally also I think, I think the main reasoning behind Stans numerous rice meals is because you can simply eat more of it and more meat - basically because the potatoe is starch and more filling because of the carbs. Jay Cutler never ate rice either for the same reasons as myself as it simply feels like an 'empty' food and just burns up straight away. Hence why its so popular for cutting.
Come to think of it I forget whether it was Brian Shaw or Thor but one of them said in a video post that they have stopped Stans Vertical diet as they lost too much strength and weight on it and reverted back to the way they ate before.
Seriously mate try it - have a white jacket and meat before deadlifts and the next time have rice and meat and I guarantee you'll be stronger off the potatoe. I'll often do pasta & potatoe too, personally though I just never bother with rice. White Jackets, pasta, white bread are all brilliant.
Yea Brian Shaw is off it. He switched coaches and the new one had him switch diets. Thor’s still on it tho and is thriving on it. Brian did say he wasn’t performing as well. Probably goes back to how everyone responds different to different stuff. There are still a good amount of nutrients in white rice, although not as much as potatoes.
I think it’s important to point out too that Shaw still eats a fuck ton of rice and rice noodles. Watch his grocery shopping on the new diet video. It seems his carbs are potatoes and rice, which is exactly what I was talking about trying.
I’ll definitely try the deadlift test. At the end of the day tho I like having a mix. I like rice too much to stop eating it. Rice with butter and salt is one of my favorite things to eat a shit ton of lol
AnonFuck yes. I can get 300 carbs from that, I think it's 2 cups raw, no problem..mix up some lean turkey cooked in coconut oil with an avacado and I'm set. I toss some paprika and Montreal steak seasoning on it, delicious and relatively low sodium.
Jasmine, it's easier to digest than basmati. I go with Super Lucky Elephant or Imperial Dragon, Walmart's got the best deals on 20-25lb bags.
Mahatma jasmine rice is 7.00 for 5 lbs at Walmart. There is a Thai brand at Sam’s that is much cheaper but smells and taste kind of earthy almost like it’s mildewed I couldn’t get used to it.
Basmati . We get it at Sam's. 20 pounds for 18.98
Any particular brand?
It says Royal on it . Red and white sack it has handles and its burlap
I know exactly what ur talking about. Good shit, thanks man.
4kg asda own long grain rice. Cost about £4 and lasts long enough.
I cook 750grams in a fucking huge pot for 18 minutes, stirred once or twice and once drained and rinsed it’s at the perfect. No need for a rice cooker.
Maybe I have low standards but I’ve used my prep rice for dinner nights and only had compliments.
Does it matter how much water you use? Like can you use too much? And keep it at a rolling boil the whole time? I really gotta learn how to cook it properly. My rice cooker is convenient but it does take like 30+ mins.
Rinse the rice,
Measure your water (2 water 1 rice, reduce water if need be in future batches.) and rice and salt. I add butter and sauté the dry rice in melted butter for a minute to coat each grain. Clumps less that way.
Toss in the water, cover, and get it boiling, put it on high.
Turn it to low for 20 min. Some stoves run cooler and you may need med-low but no higher.
Might need a few minor adjustments but that’s the basics.
I’m not sure but I imagine more is better than less. I used 500ml per 70g of rice so in my huge 750g pot full of rice I use a little less than 6litres. I notch the heat up full wack then when it starts to bubble switch it onto half heat/simmer for the remaining time, stirring a few times take out and rinse. I like my rice firmer than soft, I can’t stand stodgy rice.
Agreed on the texture. And you rinse ur rice after? I always did it before.
I do it both, after as it washes off the grains of surface starches, prevents clumping, and yields a clean, fresh taste.
Hot or cold water: cold if prepping, hot if serving.
Damn. I’m learning all kinds of shit in here today
The internet fucking rocks. I’ve build my whole life around YouTube tutorials

Here is how to make rice
Awesome thanks brother
I put the wrong link. Need to watch the longer one. He explains the finger. And I cant seem to save that link. But after the rinse add water till the first line in your finger over the rice . No measure cup nothing. Add butter bring to a rolling boil. Let simmer till it's done. Perfect every time
I have a buddy from peurto rico that tried explaining something about a finger. I wonder if it’s the same thing. Sounds familiar. I wasn’t really paying attention
AnonDude get an instapot, they're cheap, and cook rice faster than I can shit before work lol
I should get one. I can just throw my rice cooker out then. I just don’t want another “thing” laying around. My OCD gets the best of me. I don’t like a lot of stuff.
Sounds like they got it down in a regular pot above there. Gonna have to give that a go too.
Expensive azz uncle bens. Getting a rice cooker for christmas. Cant wait to hear some of these cheaper but tastey brands
Jasmine or Basmati
I prefer basmati rice. when it comes to the rice not cooking nice in the cooker, you might be throwing too much rice in at once. I cook my rice in batches as filling the rice cooker to what it says is the limit will make it not cook fully.
I only cook 2 cups at a time for that reason, and if I get riceselect it comes out great, but I got a cheaper brand once and it sucked. Maybe I just got an unlucky batch
Basmati, Uncle B.

Basmati rice, 1 cup Cooks in 4 mins in instapot. It's delicious..
Sweet. Definitely gonna try this one too.
Nice. Basmati is my favorite rice
I get mahatma Long grain white rice...can get it by the 20lb bag...works in instapot...don’t have a rice cooker though
I buy this too and it comes out fine in a rice cooker.
More water - more sticky
Less water - fluffier
Good to know. Thanks boss
nice. from what i understand it's the same when it comes to cooking rice. good to know. I was just looking at this too: https://www.amazon.com/DYNASTY-22927-Dynasty-Jasmine-20-Pound/dp/B004NRG...
maybe I'll get one of each and see which is better (or if there's even a difference)
