instant oatmeal?
ad
Is it alright to use the quaker instant oatmeal, like the kind that comes in the pouch and you just add water and microwave for a minute or do you guys prefer steal cut or rolled oats? Is there a significant difference? Also been wondering if i get tired of oatmeal could I use rice cakes with some almond butter as a carb source with breakfast?

I eat 2 cups of instant plain oatmeal a day first thing in the morning. I also work a physical job. I get 9 lb box at sams for cheap, eat them with warm water, uncooked. I've done the steel cut before and like them, but when your eating as much as I do, the trouble to prepare them and the cost just doesn't add up. Old fashion rolled oats are the way to go if you want ease, bang for your buck and relatively slow glycemic rate. The fact that I don't cook mine slows the glycemic rate a bit aswell. I know a guy that when bulking eats four cups a day. Two in the morning and two around his workout, and for bulking that worked well for me. It all comes down to glycemic rates and goals.
nice idea, thanks
AnonThey do make "plain" instant oatmeal

Instant oatmeal is fine if you dont mind the sugar.
You can just the same get the normal oat meal, and cook it in micro wave, its super easy. takes like 3 minutes and turns out just fine.
You can't go wrong with oatmeal. Are old school oats better than instant? Yes. Instant oats tend to have more sugar. But first thing in the morning is one time it's ok to have a simply sugar. But now they offer low sugar instant and high fiber instant. All of the above are going to achieve the same goal which is sustained energy through the morning. Wheat Bagels and peanut butter are a good alternative.
AnonCheck out the Kashi Go Lean line. High protein and fiber.
Good stuff. The thing to remember is whether your bulking or cutting you have two times you have to get your carb on. Once first thing morning and post workout. The reason is to shut down the catabolism. Straight protein alone will not do this.
ThunderLightthanks for info
Anonyou are correct. just to add to it: although ingesting proteins will not stop the catabolic reactions, they will provide the raw materials needed during these reactions as a dietary source, which will in turn avoid breakdown of tissues. quantity and timing is critical at this point. +1 for understanding this process go check out my forums. you may find some of them interesting. the ones on overtraining and fasting touch base on these catabolic reactions.
AnonSteel cut and rolled oats are going to have a superior nutrient content than does the par cooked oats (instant). I eat the hell out of it some times. Lately, I've been on a kick with rolled oats, fresh peanut butter (yes fresh), almonds, and dried fruit. I treat it just like instant, but microwave it for a min. Chase this down with a glass of Borden high protein milk, and I'm good for the next 3 hrs.
I guess it depends on if you are bulking or cutting. If your cutting and on a very low calorie restriction rice cakes might be better because they are low in calories. But otherwise I would go with oatmeal unless the package is heavily processed or full of sugar.
Anonso if i was cutting and wanted oatmeal, you would go with normal steal cut or rolled oats?
Instant or rolled is not going to make or break your cut bro. Most eroiders talk about carb starvation when it comes to cutting. But you will get better results with mild carb diet and simply adjusting your cardio(I know, I hate it to) to hit your goal.
