it depends on the source tbqh. they are generally real AIs but they are sold as "research chemicals". many guys use them because they tend to be very cheap, and are easy to dose with an oral syringe in case one wants to use a half dose or split up their doses. although most RC companies are pretty legit, and strive to put out the purest and best product they can, many guys prefer to use pharma grade AI because the quality control standards have to be high at an FDA approved pharmaceutical plant.
