Anybody try a DEXA Body Composition scan?
Since the beginning of the year, I have been employing a Time Restricted Feeding implementation on my diet and have been dropping a good amount of bodyfat. I have tried several different methods of measuring my bodyfat with very different results. See below:
Bioelectrical impedence (feet contact points) - 21.5%
Bioelectrical impedence (hands contact points) - 13.3%
Bodyfat calipers (3 site) - 10.1%
As you can see, they are all over the board. I'm not that concerned about the actual number and these methods are fine for identifying the trend but intellectual curiosity has got the best of me. So, has anyone tried a DEXA body composition scan (https://dexascan.com/) ? Looks pretty painless and simple, plus it is actually accurate. Also, it would be good to know visceral fat content.
Any feedback on this? Thanks!

Impedance is a waste. Totally unreliable. I wouldn't even use it for trends. To many variables involved with it which can swing it one way or another. Seems the leaner you are the more inaccurate they get. I was sub 5% BF just before a comp and tried it and said I was over 20% BF.
Calipers and scale are my go to when tracking body composition changes. DEXA is the cadillac but you are going to be pretty close once you know how to use calipers and they are really cheap.
I did years ago and it was spot on and very interesting. They put me on a scale first, did the scan, and when added up, the scan and the scale matched my weight. Everything was measured, bone, fat(s) muscle etc.
The impedance is a joke.
Calipers when used correctly are fairly accurate.
Hydrostatic (not mentioned above) also very accurate. I tried this before trying DEXA https://www.healthline.com/health/hydrostatic-weighing
Cool. Thanks for the feedback.
I agree on the limited utility of Impedance. Assuming you can keep other factors somewhat constant (hydration, empty stomach/bladder, etc.), I think using it for the trend is useful.
I don’t do anything involving going under water so hydrostatic is out. Also probably fear factor type competitions…
Thanks again.
