Seriously guys, what is this world coming to when texting is the prefered way to communicate ?
ad
Im sorry you can just call me a dinosaur or old fashioned, but to me if I have something important to say, I want to call (on a good quality land line), see the person eye to eye, or write a propper letter.
I understand quick communication via text is great , but Im hearing people say they break up with a BF/GF via text, they quit a job via text, or reach out to someone who is mad at them via text.
It just seems shallow ,empty and cowardly and the truth is I am disgusted by it.
Please , if it is something of even mild importance isnt it worth more than a text ?

AnonYou know this is an old post but I have to comment. I went to dinner tonight and this dingbat was all they way over in the corner of the restaurant talking on his phone and eating the same time. The whole room was silent while we had to listen to his banter about his credit rating and 5 different vehicles he was talking about buying all while his mouth was full and smacking. Then i seen another old woman make 2 phone calls at a Mexican restaurant while shoveling food down her throat at the same time. I give the texters credit for not putting me through this. The reason they were probably talking so loud is because all of the smacking and chewing. talk about lack of etiquette.
I hate that!! Also... People that wait to call someone after they get in the car with you.. Wtf? I don't want to hear your convo!!
AnonI do think texting is not as invasive on other people, it does seen to be kept more private. Unless texting and driving.
I'm pretty antisocial so I love texting but I do agree that the important shit deserves face to face time or a phone call
I don't date because I'm married but I hear this all the time about how people will go on dates and not put their phone down. When I take my wife out I don't pull my phone out because I try to focus all my attention on her. You would think that would be priority on the first few dates.... Right!
I agree I think it is rude to be with some one and spend the entire time texting etc .... I just think if you are spending time with someone the focus shouldn't be on other people
AnonThank you !! So nice to hear that. I see couples out to dinner all the time and the each have their phones out.
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.Permalinkoh god its so common...i've broken up via text message and been broken up with...christ i've even had sex text as im sure many of you have too
sadly welcome to 2013 except the sex text part thats kinda fun
I have personally broken up with a man via text. I sent him a text that said "Hey this really isn't working out" He said "Ummm really, OK" it was great. Shallow? Coward? No I wouldn't say so..I thought it was the nicest way to do it.. and I didn't want to crush his soul by having to tell him he sucked in bed.. I call into work via text and I update my boss weekly on my progress via email. I've only personally seen him twice in six months, I am happy with that. As for friends, they know to text I don't have time to talk on the phone. I have work, kids, gym, house, cooking and cleaning to get done. Have you ever tried to talk on the phone with a 6 month old gabbing, 11 year old saying mom watch this, boyfriend saying what's for dinner and the cat asking for food at your feet? It's impossiable. If I didn't have text some people I would never get to communitcate with.
AnonIm sorry to hear thats what life has become for you. I hope that some day soon before it exhausts you that you and your BF will figure out a way to lighten the load .
Nothing to be sorry for sir.. It's a great life to live.. It's busy.. but I still sit down for dinner every night. My child doesn't eat fast food everyday. I'm just saying, I don't really have time to hold a convo with someone. Now if it's something that would be sensitive (death, birth, divorce) I make sure I respect the other person and call. I wouldn't trade my crazy beautiful life for anything!
AnonOk well Im glad to hear you are happy, and it sounds like you take great pride in taking care of those you love.
It just sounded like the typical "rat race" story , which I have to remind my self to get off once in a while , (less so now than in my 30's)
I agree I thought that was why we got cell phones and shit canned the pagers
AnonSo glad I'm young enough to never have owned a pager.
I like people not being able to get a hold of me when I don't want to be bugged. It's nice
yeah they sucked but everybody had one. But I was the first one I new to get a cellphone
AnonHey Broseph? I mean Bro'Cephus? there is one time that texting ticks me off and that's when people are driving. They will just sit at a green light texting and I have to be a dick and honk at them.
My Ex had a daughter in high school and she would take the phone in the shower with her because she was afraid she would miss a text and it wasn't a water proof phone. She went through phones like crazy. She would text at night in bed on a school night to a lot of older boys she shouldn't be talking too. Her grandpa bought her a little Kia and it was a nice car. she was texting and driving and ran into the back of another car and totaled it.
Maybe there is such a thing as text etiquette? The good, the bad and the ugly?
Terephthalic Pt...Fucking this^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I swear I have to honk at people for sitting at green lights like once every week or two weeks or so. It pisses me off to no end. I wish I could crash into them. I have no way of punishing these assholes.
Oh definitely, once I hitched a lift to campus with acquaintance who was texting and driving, he almost killed a little girl. We alerted him literally in the nick of time, the car even bumped her softly! Very traumatic
Anona 4o something year old father was killed in a town next to me . A 16 yr old girl was texting in her car and the guy was just out for his morning run.
It's easier. Most ppl I have no desire to speak to on the phone. Ppl don't even bother calling anymore. They know I don't answer so they text instead.
AnonYes and that is a sad sad state of affairs . Who the F would want to speak on a phone these days anyway, most people just call you from a crappy line full of static and echo, its often too hard to understand what they are saying.
As it has been stated below, a generation is now growing up completely lacking the skills to speak face to face.
I'm just anti social. :-)
you put on such a tough guy act ...lol.. call me
Anondont you mean text ?
Anonhaha just downright mean too , I can only imagine you when your 80 , Grumpier old men part 3 !
IM sexting can improve your yield 150%, you can't chat up more than 1 girl over the landline
Anonsee thats the problem with your texting generation, you think its increasing your yield simply by texting them. I only counted it as increasing my yield when I had to open a new tooth brush for them.
AnonIf I could give you a plus 1 I would. You nailed it. you can talk to several people at a time on text. Sometimes you have to be careful about returning a text if there has been a shit load of people getting the same text, then you get a text "Who is this?"
AnonI said those very same words. Then I got drug in. I've started to warm up to it. But when I got something on my mind, I use the phone. I'm texting you from my phone right now.

AnonId better go check it then. Let me turn it on first ;)
I prefer to communicate with my ex via text regarding the visitation scheduling for my kids... I will discuss important issues via phone and face to face when necessary but I don't want to talk to him anymore than he wants to talk to me and so texting is a wonderful thing ...
X2!! (Hell if at all)
X3
Two words: What Time
anything of importance should be done the old fashioned way. face to face. maybe a phone call. I personally love text cuz I hate talking on the phone.
tread-mI talk to a lot of people so much prefer text even for things of importance although I will agree, delivering bad news should not be done by text. It shows a lack of compassion. Aside of that I close deals for work via text, text friends all day etc. So much quicker and I can actuallly get all the texts in as opposed to dis some people by not getting enough time for all the return calls. To each his own I respect others views on this or other things.
On a side note not necessarily directed at you, I often wonder if people that hate things such as this just refuse to move with technology . I can fire off 10 texts in 5 minutes and lucky to get one call off in that time and some people would love to spill on me and take all myy time, then there's none for anyone else. I do have a few friends though who just don't get it and frankly have way too much time on their hands. The problem with them is they then thing everyone has too much time on their hands and some of us just don't. Truth is, kinda wish I had more time sometimes. Reality is, I don't...love me some texting. There are exceptions to the rule and some people I want to talk to , hear their voice ..I give a shit in other words. Lol...btw , text me, have a quesfion for you, pretty important so hurry up.
Anondid you get my text ?
He never checks those damn things...he hates texting!!
Every time I see someone text I envision Samuel Morse muttering to himself, "If only I could get this to work by talking".
Followed by Alexander Graham Bell wistfully musing with Watson over a glass of sherry, "Well Tom, we did it, no one will ever need or want to text again."
Agree 100%. Texting is so impersonal, you cannot identify the tone of the message or sarcasm or anything to that extent, texting is also causing our youth to not be able to converse face to face, its actually quite sad.
Last year me and my gf both still bad blackberries, we ended up deleting each other off bbm as we caught ourselves communicating through that wayyyyy too much, we rarely ever text anymore either and its a hell of a lot better. We also got rid of facebook a few years back, but that BS is a whole other topic......,
AnonI got rid of facebook too, ended up causing fights between my wife and I. I found it to be a very negative influence.
I just heard a guy tell me the other day that his wife texts him and the kids when dinner is ready, but THEY ARE ALL IN THE HOUSE !!!
wow! thats is just ridiculous.
waltri have unlimited text, but not voice minutes =/ also no land line
Anonaronl jpap and missC all really great to hear , thank you !
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkI only text people I can't stand to talk to LOL!!.. or if i'm short on time.. Pretty pathetic to dump someone or quit a job through text.. no backbone there
I text maybe 5-10 messages a day tops, but yes important things merit voice-voice.
But yes this young generation who cant so much as look up from their stupid smart phone for 3 seconds to make decent human eye contact when you pass them in the hallway is just pathetic.
If you want to see where technology is taking us than view the movie "Idiocracy".
Its alarming how much more people are like the characters in that movie now than compared to when it came out.
I do text message but if i ever have a important issue it is solved face to face or like you said over the phone and your right people use texts as a escape for having to face a problem. I just use them for ease
AnonI ABSOLUTELY HATE HATE HATE TEXTING!!!
I would rather take a few seconds/minutes to talk to someone on the phone instead of text.
A lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication comes from texting. You can't ever feel or hear the emotion when someone is happy or sad or excited or mad, we all try to interpret how the other end is saying it, but it just never comes out right.
