Pulled strained neck muscle................from squats????? WTF?!

ad

Hey All,
So just seeing if anyone else has dealt with this happening. I did some heavy (for me) squats yesterday. I seem to somehow managed to pull a muscle on the left side of my neck by my jaw. It isn't debilitating, but Jesus it's sore. Has anyone had this happen before, what did you do if anything to remedy it. I haven't worked out yet today, so I have no idea how that is going to go.

Thanks

Took 3 days off, and did a short workout last night with no issues. I still have a little lump but it has gone down significantly and there is no pain. I'm still going to wait a few more days before I attempt heavy squats again. As always thanks for all of the feedback, its appreciated.

Things I’ve seen that can cause this.

Looking up while squatting. Look straight or slightly down. There should be know feeling of pressure in your neck. Your head should follow the angle of your torso.

Clinching your jaw. Relax and try to keep your jaw relaxed.

Squeezing the bar to tight with your hands, which also tends to lead folks to pulling the bar in a downward motion against the neck and back causing unneeded pressure and tension across the shoulders, back and neck. Let up on the grip. Balance the weight and relax.

Here is a decent video.

Thanks for all the info guys. I do look a bit forward and up while doing squats. So next go round I'll try looking/keeping my head a bit lower and see how it goes. My lovely wife picked me up a TMJ specific mouth guard this afternoon too. So between those 2 adjustments, I can hopefully avoid this in the future.

This can happen sometimes depending on where you're looking during squats. I always pick a spot on the mirror or where the wall meets the floor. A lot of times people will strain their necks while looking up during the movement. I'm not saying that it'll happen every time you look up, and I'm not saying that it can't happen looking at the two spots where i look either. At least for me the only time I had a neck problem from squatting is when I was looking up. If it were me, I would wait until the soreness has diminished before I got back in the gym.

Do you mean actually pulled & locked up or just very sore? I get a sore neck virtually everytime I deadlift and have managed to lock up my neck in the past when dumbell benching and turning my head to the side lol That absolutely killed. Either way don't worry - I find it normally takes about 4/5 days to heal.

It's just tender and a lil swollen feeling right by my jaw line. I was just sitting on the couch last night and all of a sudden my ear started hurting a bit. Woke up today a bit stiff and sore. I just find it odd. But, I was pushing through my last 3 reps pretty hard. So I can understand how it happened,.....I guess. I'm 42 and I have never had it happen before. Guess if it happens again I'll know why. Thanks for the reply.

Get a mouth guard when doing heavy squats and deadlifts. Make sure you push up with your head at the end of the rep and only if you need to
