What's up guys? I'm waayyyyy off topic with this but WTF is up with these gas prices?? I'm about ready to start driving my daughter's go-cart to work!

El Duderino's picture

Gas prices are driven by oil prices, no news there.
As we begun to slide into spring the formulation of gas changes slighly because of the seasonal change. Summer gas has additives that lower emissions. Additionally supply and demand plays a big role. Now that we're starting to come out of the pandemic more people are driving thus more demand thus increasing prices. Another issue is the upcoming travel/ holiday season. Gas producers preemptively raise their prices around traveling holidays to maximize profit. Another reason; oil producers will manipulate their outputs to manipulate pricing i.e. increasing production will drive oil prices down making some of the more costly to obtain oil reserves (especially those reserves in the oil sands) not economically feasible to obtain and thus leaving a larger share of the market to those producers that are doing the manipulation. Finally refineries will go down for periods of time for service or due to weather issues (i.e. hurricane season on the gulf coast where many refineries are located). More electric vehicles will actually cause a decline in gas pricing, all things being equal, because of lower demand.

It all about the petro doller.

fusebox's picture

Filled my diesel truck up today and let's just say ouch. That one hurt. 3.40 a gallon. But I live in the north fucking pole so it's premium diesel now even though it's really nice out

alekaras's picture

So it comes out 0,85 per liter right?? If so it's pretty damn cheap in my book. In my country Greece 1,60 € per liter....

press1's picture

How's the training coming along Bud?

alekaras's picture

Pretty darn good broski, even still with light weight... I do get some serious pumps Smile must be all that shit I ve eaten those past few weeks lfmao Smile

press1's picture

So when you are lifting now then do you brace in the core or do you have to leave it relaxed?

alekaras's picture

Relaxed buddy, when I go back to heavy lifting It will be with belt, the only restriction beyond the heavy lift I have is no direct ab work for at least 1 more month

press1's picture

Is it because of what you do for a Job that you live in such a harsh climate mate? It must be hell on earth for training - It must take a long time to get warmed up properly for lifting then when you are sore very uncomfortable outside in the cold.

fusebox's picture

I can do what I do anywhere in the us but I wouldn't make as much money. They pay a premium wage to keep people here. That said the cold is just that. It's cold. Get used to it lol

META99's picture

Oil is on the rise. When oil is up, gas goes with

LeaningForward's picture

Alright so I'm for sure gonna throw my 2 cents in here. In the US as prices historically are higher and spike quite a bit more when we have a democrat in office. And historically are a bit lower and much more stable under a republican president. I'm not saying they are wildly lower, just slightly. And that is with taking inflation and average annual incomes adjusting for cost of gas. Also the Cost of crude oil really isn't affected by world leaders on the market but their foreign import export policies do effect the ass end (us, the consumer). I'm not making this a political thing I'm just stating a factual base you can do some research on. Don't matter to me left or right is in office we will always have our issues here in the US until we all can just get along...

Also Supply and demand. With technology getting better out there and the demand becoming less for gas at the pump (ie. less visits for a fill up) because of hybrid and electric vehicle availability, it also could be a possible reason for gas prices creeping up a bit. The oil guys and gals will still get their money, aint gonna be a change in the rich wanting to maintain wealth brother.

@Greg is on point for sure. Keep an eye on the market and news around the world and at home. Always plays some huge roles on how we are affected as consumers on the end.

Finally I say, F it. Get a tune up on the go cart, pick up a siphon kit at your local hardware store, "acquire" fuel from an outlying city (pro tip-never in your town), and enjoy the hell out of Mario cart sliding into your daughters school parking lot. she'll be the coolest kid at school day one. Be easy brother.

Pale's picture

How far back you want to go? Not sure what facts you were going by. The truth is it doesn't make a statistical difference which party is in office.

Halsey's picture

The truth is both political parties are really on the same team. Or they used to be before trump.

PhillyMelvin_Smelvin's picture

I kinda agree...Anyone who believes the whole politics dog and pony show is real has been fooled though...what do all 4 presidents who were assassinated have in common?
Answer that question and you're headed down the right rabbit hole.

Greg's picture

what do all 4 presidents who were assassinated have in common?

They were president.

LeaningForward's picture

I absolutely do not want a political debate brother. But honestly I've done this research over a period of time because it was a topic some of my handicapped buddies that talk shit about democrats brought up. So I finally did some research on it. I also looked at both conservative and liberal media outlets. After the research was done I think it was minuscule but on the democratic side it was .06%-.08% more per democratic president then republican and the swings were crazy during office in comparison as well. I also stated that the head of state and government doesn't play a role in setting the price of crude, just a massive role impacting international trade. And again brother I want nothing to do with a political debate. NOT my thing at all. Nor do I disagree or disrespect any side of the isle. I'm not that guy, for even a heartbeat. I just thought I'd throw it in there because its really something I've checked out in my past. If I've offended or upset I apologize brother. Have a great rest of your weekend gentlemen.

Pale's picture

Well cite your work then. I put up one link of several I read to back up what I am saying. My feelings are irrelevant. I deal in facts

LeaningForward's picture

https://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/Energy-Voices/2012/1106/Are-gas-pr...

https://reason.com/2018/06/01/why-arent-liberals-celebrating-higher-ga/

https://nypost.com/2018/06/01/yes-democrats-want-higher-gas-prices-and-o...

And honestly most of the other garbage I've researched attack politicly one or the other side of the isle. So in my opinion they are pretty politically biased and dirt trash when it comes to a legitimate argument or factually based information. But read the first link I posted up there. It's a direct correlation to the very first post that comes up on a google search that you initially posted for me to read. I try very hard to read between the lines brother. And like I had said before. I am not arguing politics and never do so, I'm neither one way or the other. I'm for right and wrong nothing else. I served in a military under both conservative and liberal affirmations and no matter who's "in charge" my goal was and always will be the right thing in my eyes and what growing up in a single mother household made me to be. Again have a great rest of your Sunday. Be easy brother.

Pale's picture

Your first link comes to the exact same conclusion. There is no significant difference. .08 over the last hundred years. The lowest average was actually under Clinton. Dems actually have the lowest and the highest.

LeaningForward's picture

Hahaha. We can do this all day brother. You said it yourself .08% over the last 100 years. Meaning in all actuality there is a difference between who is in office or not. Factually. I'm not sure what you're not understanding here. Democrat's vs republicans there IS a difference. Correct? Again you just stated the fact. And I stated as well in my very first post that it is minuscule. But there IS a difference because dems have the lowest and highest costs of gas per gallon during their terms, making the AVERAGE higher under democratic presidential administration. Honestly brother I'm not even a political guy nor do I lean one way or the other. And hopefully you read the other links because they were way worse than the first I posted in my last rebuttal. Which was right under the very first google search post you thru up there after your research.

Swear to god not trying to be a dick sir. Just stating some fact in which I've done my research on in the past. And ill say it again as to not have any misconceptions or misinterpretations here. I AM NOT on one side of the isle or the other. I do not talk politics in a way that favors one or the other. I am for the people as one of the people. Thats all. And I will stand by a point of view in which I've done more than a single google search on. Hopefully you can understand where I'm coming from and respect that brother. And by all means if you'd like to PM me we can have a friendly chat there as well. I don't mind at all and hope you have a great night.

Pale's picture

Yes you are.you write a whole page of bulls hit that won’t change the facts. You are falling on the sword over .08 difference. I am don’t wasting my time with you. The numbers don’t lie. And they don’t spin

LeaningForward's picture

I apologize if I've upset you and for wasting your time brother. Was not an intention of mine in any way. You're right the numbers don't lie or spin. Have a great week.

Greg's picture

Ultimately the oil commodity is a futures game. As are crops for that matter. Investors are from all political parties across the globe. The oil market is not just a US thing.

That said, as an ETF manager if the winds are no longer at the back of ARCO I shift the weight of my holdings from ARCO to BP so I can continue to see favorable returns.

Hence, negligible difference in market performance irrespective of party. Now, prices for gas at the pump is something different...

Pale's picture

Well, both the lowest and the highest average were under Dem presidents. Global and national events or lack thereof are the real factors. Not which party occupy's the Whitehouse.

Greg's picture

No argument there, other outside factors such as the pandemic and climate have large impacts.

That said, I don't think Biden is in charge as much as some sort of progressive cabal in the wings. I hope we won't be looking overly ambitious green new deal policies that will over regulate and tax the oil industry in an effort to incentivize more renewable power use/production before its ready for prime time.

Pale's picture

I think people underestimate how much of a corporatist he really is. If not for the extreme times we live in he is republican lite. As far as renewable I think to some degree the (especially cars) the writing is on the wall. They can make electric cars that can compete with gasoline. Not sure when or if they will ever completely take over, but they will be an option.

Greg's picture

I think people underestimate how much of a corporatist he really is.

Like I said, I don't think he's in charge.

Much like Obama with shovel ready jobs waiting to restart the economy.

One meeting with Reed and Pelosi and it became "you got to pass it before you can read it" health care.

PhillyMelvin_Smelvin's picture

.
Agree 100%

Pale's picture

I personally do not subscribe to that line of thought. But it is a very popular view. You and I lived through the second term of Reagan with Alzheimers, this is not like that IMO

Halsey's picture

After landing on the moon in 1969, Nasa (government) said they wanted to land on Mars by 2000. Didnt quite make it.

Pale's picture

We are getting close now to making that leap.

Halsey's picture

Yeah closer, but not with NASA. As always necessity is the mother of all inventions. My biggest concern is how we are realistically going to run all the power plants without coal or natural gas. We really dont have the technology to store power for extreme events with solar or wind. I have a natural gas power plant with in 10 miles of my house that is only used as a backup to the grid when needed. This country is not ready to be fossil fuel free. Dont get me wrong, I want to help this planet anyway we can, but we aren't even close.

Little Jimmy's picture

New normal. Only going to get worse .

Greg's picture

Let me see... perhaps a perception that a new government is declaring war on oil?

The price of oil is going up in the futures market because investors see issues in the supply chains and the possibility of further disruptions. That immediately gets translated to the price at the pump irrespective of todays actual situation.

Gas stations need to increase their prices now or they won't have operating revenue after they pay for their next tanker full of gas.

If the market reassess the risk gas prices can go down just as quickly. All this while the gas station and distribution center are still pumping gas bought in the past at a lower rate.

Halsey's picture

Yeah prices are getting so high, I can barely justify driving my 1978 f250 4x4 with a 460 ci bored 20 over.

Pale's picture

I bet highway that baby gets 5 mpg! lol

Halsey's picture

Glass packs, 36 tsl super swampers, FUCK THE GAS MILEAGE ITS WORTH IT!

Prices get any higher and I'm gonna start snorting coke and running everywhere,. nearly a dollar in the last 2 months.

Big_guy's picture

Coke sales are about to go up big time lol

press1's picture

When I use to come over to the States on holiday I use to nearly fall on the floor when I'd see how cheap you guys get it compared to us in the UK!! Was the same with the price of a McDonalds or Burger King Lol

Big_guy's picture

Gas was like $2 a month and a half ago.. how its around $2.60... that's crazy!!

press1's picture

Do you realise we pay around $10 per gallon!! Lol

Mind you our car engine sizes tend to be much smaller than yours or they are turbocharged.

Big_guy's picture

At $10 a gallon I would only own walking shoes lol

GrowMore's picture

Here in the UK we pay anywhere around 40/75% more for our fuel than our American counterparts, but then again we get our beautiful national health system so it’s a fair trade. What do you get MPG?

I get 40-45mpg USA / 50-55mpg UK on average out of my family diesel.

Not sure on my van but it varies depending on what I’m carrying. 30-40 mpg (uk).

Big_guy's picture

I get about 30mpg.. not horrible but I hate the numbers at the pump.... And I have to pay $300 monthly for health insurance.. it's tough here in the states at the moment!
