How do you guys phych out?
ad
What's up guys so I'm happy to say I broke a pr today of 405x1 on the bench! My nervous system is fried as I write this lol but in order to get that I had to phych myself out pretty good.
Everyone that lifts heavy knows this is the almost a must to go through those pr's. I have to listen to a song that has some deep meaning to me to get me pumped and phyched and I have to visualize myself doing the workout before hand.
Before I do the lift I like to imagine the gym is empty and it's just me and all that weight going toe to toe. Now, what do you guys do to psych yourself out?

most guys lift to get rid of anger.. read anything Kai green went thru..
that only works for so long.. then you have to figure out something else to use.
I think about how much a bitch my recent ex gf was. That makes me angry enough to lift anything
Not that it matters much but "psych yourself out" means to lose the psychological advantage. Pysch your self UP means to get fired up. Congratulations on the bench nothing like the feeling of hitting a goal!
stunnerhrI stand corrected lol yea hitting that pr felt good.
I block out everyone else, my anxiety drops to zero and I take my time ever so carefully strapping up my wrist straps so they are just right. I tilt my hat down so I can't see the top of my face in the mirror thats infront. I do some micheal phelps look-a-like streches, the ones he does right before he dives in but with my own style. And I just picture myself being the best mfer in there right now, the only mfer in there that matters. I lay down on my back while playing one of my favorite tunes, lets call it "Tool: Parabola" for now. Decide what grip i'm going to use, get my whole body in the right position. Take a few deep breaths, I call this the calm before the storm and usually the song is about to drop. Breath in slow as I push it off the rack and slowly come down for that first rep exhaling all my oxygen out then BOOM I push that bitch while trying to break the bar in half breathing in and contracting my chest muscles at the top. Wooo almost took me back to yesterday. This is a big reason I enjoy working out alone, I have worked out with partners and I can't be doing all this shit, I start to get some anxious feeling that someones waiting to get their set done and it fucks with my mental game a little I have noticed vs going at it alone and not feeling that extra pressure for me.
stunnerhrNice, I liked "the only mfer that matters " part that's how I feel when I picture the gym being empty. It's crazy it's almost like a ritual people have do to before going to battle.
AnonHonestly and I know this is stupid but on the heavier sets or leg days when you're pushing about til you puke.... I have to go into the set at the right moment of the perfect song and I repeat to myself "there's no such thing as injury there's no such thing as injury there's no such thing as injury" a few times and go til you can't go anymore. My biggest adversary in the gym is the fear of injury.
It's sort of irrational since NONE of my injuries have occurred during a set, it's all been outside of the gym or when using some bitch weight warming up incorrectly moving too fast. Never once during a properly performed high intensity set when fully warmed up.
stunnerhrI'm with you bro when going really heavy I always worry about injury but I know the only way I'm going to get stronger is to do it.
Remind myself that I'm juicing and can't lift like a sissy, then I feel alot stronger.
stunnerhrI can't use that one right now I'm on pct lol.
