this may be an iffy topic given the composure of this site, but I have been looking into this career path.
so one of the automatic disqualifications happens to be drug usage of schedule I, II, or III substances within the past 10 years.
do they drug test for steroids?
do all places give a polygraph test? also when taking the polygraph do they ask about the drugs within the last 10 years? how do you go about passing this knowing that you have used steroids?
any and all related info anyone has would be a great help.

I know the polygraph mainly focuses on Narcotic and habit forming substances, and just general questions about your ethical background. If your worried just find someone that will run the poly on you a few times for practice, they are not as foolproof as everyone thinks. Either way congrats on your choice, I respect anyone who puts their life on the line for the general public. I don't think I could ever be a cop, I'd end up pistol whipping annoying people...
there is a local spot for lifters thats crawling with cops on AAS. i have trained a few guys there, and im currently training a cop who started his second cycle he got from another officer. AAS among law enforcement is rampant in my area. it absurd to actually think about, and i have first hand knowledge of a few of those on. theyre ticking time bombs in my opinion

Xv's comment...though crude as it is; brings up an interesting question. I see it as a moral question and ethical one as well. Morally; are you able to arrest someone for possession of a class III drug that you yourself use on a frequent basis? Ethically can you take an oath to uphold the law knowing that you yourself aren't and then not enforce it on someone who is also not holding to that very law?
On another note ethically why is the law right and those who use steroids wrong? Watch Bigger Faster Stronger on netflix. There are some interesting objections to laws banning performance enhancing drugs while there are no laws against the abuse of other drugs that are used for "performance" enhancement in other arena's. In some cases with deadly consequences.
AnonI got pulled over by a highway patrol when I was younger for speeding and driving while license was revoked. There in the top of my gym bag was a bottle of Dianabol. The trooper took me to jail and impounded my car but he pushed the dianabol down into the bottom of my gym bag. (no felony)
Cops aren't all dicks, we may need someone like this dude to be a cop. A good cop would probably think an AAS user isnt hurting anyone but himself and let him go. I have got verbal warnings plenty of times.

I'll hopefully be going through the process for the fire dept. Went to for the popo but my past caught up to me. I wouldn't worry about the drug testing. Can't tell you about the poly though. I've heard when they ask about drugs you say yes, thinking alcohol is a drug, so technically you're not lying. And forget these idiots talking shit about cops. Some suck, yes, I agree. 1jakd_hipyYou can "beat" a polygraph, I have (unfortunately in my case the polygrapher already had his mind made up so I was forced to take another). The trick is figuring out the control questions early, they'll be questions like "have you ever cheated" everyone has but that question will cause a physiological reaction in most since they will say "no". If you bite your tongue you can elevate the physiological reaction so when you lie about drugs it doesn't register as high. Remember there is a reason polygraphs aren't admissible in court, they're flawed greatly
AnonI payed a polygraph tester $600 to prove my innocence. If I were not telling the truth I would not have wasted $600. It came back inconclusive. I wasted the money, a whole evening and was left with nothing to support my story. Because of this I can honestly say they are not always right.

Also, are you sure its 10 years for the departments you're applying for? I know that some departments are different. I personally know a guy that got hired on a dept after he admitted to smoking some weed.
yes i am sure about that and cant have used canabis in the last 2 years. as for your other response, it's not that im naive i just figured if i admitted to having broken one of their rules for qualification that id automatically be outed. of course im aware exceptions are made and things brushed under the rug. i also figured trying to lie my way through would be better but im leaning toward honesty now.
