+ 2 What is most misunderstood in this sport?

ad

The recipe to success requires adequate knowledge on the many facets of Bodybuilding... weight lifting, dieting, safety awareness, chemical enhancements, just to name a few.
Each facet, in itself, should be explored very deeply to arm yourself with the confidence needed to apply it successfully to accomplish precise goals.
When we realize this, we come to terms with the fact that weight lifting/Bodybuilding is not for the foolish that some people would call "meat heads".
Quite the opposite, this sport is for the well educated man who thinks!
I would like to know, in your opinion, what is the most misunderstood aspect of this sport.
Not just for the general public, but for the Bodybuilding community as a whole as well.
I invite the more senior members on eroids to please help shedd light on these misunderstood topics

Great question with a load of interesting answers. I agree with all the comments, no homo on the photos, diet, form etc.

I'll also add I hate when people say I ONLY work out for vanity reasons.. maybe 10 years ago I first picked up a weight to impress women. However now I work out for the discipline, challenge, improvement, structure, meditation and so much more.. the real heads know what I'm on about.

I couldn't give a fuck about who thinks I'm hot, I only care for one woman and her feelings. I do this sport for myself and no one else.

At this point, I couldn't leave it behind if I wanted to. If I feel physically weak, I feel mentally weak. I'm not at my peak ( I'm not far behind it either), but anything less and I just feel off. I feed off the intensity. It keeps me humble. I think that's why there are so many angry skinny guys. I'm a better person when I feel good about me.
The last 8 weeks have been a bitch. Today is my first day off. Many 12-14 hour days a crammed in there. Still had to push and squeeze it in. I feel you on the one woman thing too. My wife doesn't even care how I look. At times she even resents it. But she also understands that it's just something I need for me these days.

As you can see, we are all touching up on the same basics that are essential to the sport of weight lifting.
Basics that we should all be very familiar with... diet, training and chemical enhancements.
All of these seem very straightforward, but in reality it's not!!!
One important thing some of us seem to forget is that this is a science! It's biology, anatomy, physiologically, just to name a few.

In my opinion, many bodybuilders fail to properly understand the several complexities involved in creating the ideal diet that is specific to their needs.
The saying "you are what u eat" has never been more true!
Understanding energy balance(calories in vs calories out) is the most basic part of this, but to accurately nail it we need to factor in a few basic components.
Understanding our resting metabolic rate, as well as factoring in the cost of activitie and how many calories we are burning throughout the day. Equally important is to understand the thermic effect of food.

All this contributes to how much we should be eating.
And that's just the very basic!
The right micronutrient combinations, consumed at the tight times is not to be overlooked either.

Some guys need to stop worrying so much about their fuckin cycles and should spend more time educating themselves on the basics of training and dieting.

One of the things I hate most is when I'm at the gym and some random dick head casually approaches me and asks me what combination of steroids I'm taking instead of asking me how long I've been lifting and what are my nutritional and training strategies.
We live in a world of instant gratification and no one wants to put in some real fuckin work.

Over the years I've seen big guys natural, skinny guys running a gram or more . Knowledge & lack off ! People stero type "Bodybuilding" , I'm not a body builder, I like to use "Physical Fit" or "Staying in Shape" to each his own on labeling. Dedication =Results = Satisfaction =Gratification, it's like the 300# guy who looses 20# in a month, he see's results = Gratification yet he's not stereo typed. Hey if baking lemon pies is what makes you happy bake away!! At the end of the day it's goals that are set & accomplished that matter. You are in control.

The general public know nothing about the sport. All they think they know is that body builders take steroids and get big. They figure that if they took steroids and walked around, they would look the same. That's probably 90% of Thur general public.

Sam I Am's picture

I totally agree with this. Hell all kinds of athletes use peds. Nandrolones and winny are common. Tyson Fury the great heavyweight is on suspension for deca right now. He's no bodybuilder. Genes play an important role but with proper diet and training anyone can build a good body but it's not easy. People don't understand this is more than a sport it's a lifestyle.

Diet

DfromPhilly's picture

I mostly work out at home, but when I do go to my gym there's one dude that makes me laugh.

He's MAYBE 115lbs. Almost sickly skinny, short and about 50 with a mustache and glasses. Actually he looks like a 50 year old smaller skinnier version of Napoleon Dynamite's brother. For real.

For curls, this dude lugs a 60lb dumbell over to a bench, heaves it up with all of his might with both hands, sits down, rests his elbow on his thigh, takes one hand off of the dumbbell and just wiggles his hand back and forth. I doubt the weight moves any more than 2 inches during his "set". He does that shit with every exercise.

Not sure what's worse. That or the kid swinging 75's. I guess at least the old guy isn't going to hurt anyone else.

This might seem a little off to say but I believe one of the biggest misunderstood things about bodybuilding/ powerlifting/ even strong men comps in the time and goals alone. I get the average person might not want to be one of these categories but I always hear so many talk about how they are going to do these things but again they don't get that eating right takes time to prep meals it takes time to build muscle, loose fat, and recover. I hope this sounds the way I mean it but just don't think because one day you see a pic and say I want to be like that person then go to the guy and mess around, don't say one I don't need to meal prep or atleast plan a idea for my food, don't think after one year you should be 10-12% body fat with abs and 20 inch arms most of those guys and gals have years and years of hard work to get to that point. If you have those aspirations don't give it 50% do it right from the start. And no a McDonald double quarter pounder is not a good source of protein XD.

How little attention to DIET the average gym rat puts into it. I've seeing people(the regulars) at my gym that after few years, they look the exact same or even fatter. People is very passionate about working out, and most work hard, but achieve nothing. Working out without a purpose or simply working out because they like the gym!

IrishMack's picture

Every national chest day for the past 4 months this guy in my gym does 310 3 times for 2 sets. Nothing more or less. He also trains with someone and they both do it. I walked over and t
Added 20 pounds on the bar while they sat there and watched me. I told him to lift it and he said he couldnt do it. I did it 1st for a quick 5 and told him to not think about it and just do it. So of course he sits, moves a little, gets down takes a few seconds to feel the bar, then proceeds to do 2 and almost drops the weight. When he got up I got back down and hit that shit for 5 more no warmup again. No farting around. I told him to stop overthinking and just do it. Nope, he said it was too much weight......yet said he was training for a powerlifting meet in 2 months. Some people just dont want to better themselves I guess.

Jayzgainz's picture

Your last sentence. This world is full of people that dont want to better themselves, they are happy to muddle through life. Fine so be it. But I go the gym to get bigger, stronger and better and I believe most people that go want the same. Its too easy to stay static and not challenge yourself.

310? Like 2 45's, a 35, a 5, and a 2.5 on each side? That's such a random number. You'd think he'd just do 3 plates

DfromPhilly's picture

This reminds me of a pic I have of my buddy from work. After coming back from shoulder surgery he was just benching the bar for a week or two to make sure the motion didn't bother him afterwards before adding weight. Before laying back for one of his sets I snuck a 2.5 on each side and snapped a pic after he started.

It might sound dumb, but to see this picture of a monster benching 2.5's is hilarious.

IrishMack's picture

I meant 315, 6 45 pound plates. So my late night math is terrible after crunching numbers all day

Gettingbig's picture

In my opinion the most misunderstood thing is that some guys think that the gear they run is going to be expensive.
Shit the expensive part isn't the gear or hgh its the grocery bill.

helloBrooklyn's picture

Too many folks have jumped in and fried their axis without ever hitting a stage, paid for it, or even made any news.

I'm sorry if I'm misreading you, but are you suggesting that there's something wrong with pursuing hardcore (i.e. enhanced) bodybuilding purely as a hobby? Some people don't ever have the intention of hitting the stage, regardless of how far they go.

kibby's picture

Yeh I remember the t3 guy.....what an idiot!!

helloBrooklyn's picture

I never claimed to be the smartest guy around. My mistake.

IrishMack's picture

He is talking about some of the people you see here or saw that have done multiple cycles and either made no progress, made very little, or fucked themselves up with nothing to show for it. In other words if as a hobby you want to do a gram of tren a week and grams of test and your an average joe what good is it? Not making any money, not competing, either wanting muscle because you think you wont get beat up anymore or think girls will fall all over you.

JL's picture

I can testify that as I got bigger people definitely seem to respect you more and not fk you as much (not acting like an arrogant tool helps a lot to) and since I started training my game increased exponentially.. Oh wait that was my hard ass work, dedication to the lifestyle and shear will to be a better person, not the steroids! :-)

helloBrooklyn's picture

There's more to life than money and competing. That's an unfair generalization to assume all who run high amounts of gear while not competing are doing it for attention. It's perfectly feasible to be extremely passionate about something and not want to make money or achieve fame with it. If someone wants to be a freak just for the sake of being a freak, and that makes him happy without making so much as a dime, then who is anyone to judge?

IrishMack's picture

Well, we are here to judge, hence why this is a review site and peoole post things and we either help or tell them to hit the bricks. Who are we to judge if a guy is 120 pounds soaking wet and wants to do a massive cycle, would we be a hypocrite to tell him hes an idiot but joe gym rat just because he is 290 pounds and everyone drools over his muscle wants to do the same thing we high five him? Its a double edged sword.

Here is a very important question, why do you train?
Why do you use aas? Is it a hobby? A hobby is a part time thing you do mostly in your spare time, noone goes to the gym in their spare time for an hour a week, more like an hour or more a day 5-7 days a week. Thats not a hobby.

Im not debating, im merely trying to get you thinking deeper then the 1st layer.

helloBrooklyn's picture

I train because I love it and don't want to live without it. I use AAS because I made the personal choice to. Maybe it's not a hobby. More of a lifestyle. But that only furthers the point. We do this because we love it, not to make money. I don't think anyone gets into bodybuilding or strength sports for the money. Otherwise they would have pursued baseball or something.

IrishMack's picture

Exactly, its a lifestyle. Cheers.

helloBrooklyn's picture

I can understand the flip side. If someone views training as "only" a part time hobby and doesn't take it seriously or take dieting seriously and views steroids as a get-ripped-quick scheme, that's where I take issue. That's where I can and will judge. I was talking about people who literally live and breathe bodybuilding/powerlifting/strongman, whatever their pursuit.

IrishMack's picture

Indeed.

For the general public: that bodybuilders today are bigger because they use more steroids and GH. Nope. Mass monsters were created by something your overweight aunt keeps in her medicine chest. Outsiders have no clue about that.

For bodybuilders: that we all respond the exact same to steroids. I see it all the time. "Bro, I grow like a weed on just 500 mgs of test; no need to go any higher." Well, not everyone is a genetic freak who has all the right junk (androgen receptors) in all the right places (muscles) and can get away with running small doses with great results. Two guys with similar stats and experience can train and eat the exact same, take the same amount, and one can have exemplary results while the other looks mediocre. This is why self experimention--albeit tempered--is necessary with AAS.

Another one that drives me nuts: "You're not getting night sweats on tren? Sorry bro, it's bunk." This goes for any side effect with any steroid. This is as stupid as daring your buddy to try a particular hot sauce that burned your taste buds off, then saying his bottle must have been bunk when he can handle it and you can't. We're all different!

anonymous8875's picture

First off, thank you hellobrooklyn for engaging in this discussion, and I'm glad you did since you touched up on some great points.
As you pointed out, steroids and GH are just a small part of the protocol that these mass monsters are applying. Gear and GH are just the standard basics to these guys. The vast amounts of pharmaceuticals pumping in there blood stream is far to much for the average lifter to withstand.
Many of these men take prescription medications for each one of there organs, simply so that they don't shut down due to the chemical warfare that is being waged on there bodies!!!

The tell tale sign of a novice in this sport is how he cycles... as you stated, not everyone responds the same to the same cycles.
It's true that many sweat there ass off at night when taking tren, and others like myself, get a perfectly sound sleep.
It took a long time for me to have the confidence to design my own cycles, but based on the results that I had from each compound, I came to the conclusion that I had to think out of the box a little and construct my own customized cycles.
Once I had the confidence to do that, I got far less side effects and better gains as well

chunkypbnj's picture

+1 for thinking for yourself. I too have come to the conclusion that designing cycles based upon YOUR OWN personal reaction to each compound is the best way for me to go.
